121 | Genesis 3:16-17 | NT general Archive 1 | Wild Olive Shoot | 180460
In all honesty imosthebob, I’m hesitant to offer an opinion here but will nonetheless. The manifestation of this divine ordinance is often played out in a contorted manner by fallen man and this is very evident today. Often, “and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.”, is taken out of context to be used as a mandate for women to be subjected to men in general. However, I’m not sure that was the full intent. Eve was created as a “helpmeet”. She was a companion for Adam. A companion is more simply one of a pair of matching things or one employed to live with and serve another, that’s according to my handy Webster’s dictionary. So as Eve was in original creation, she was Adam’s helpmeet. Ultimately they were a match for one another. So as a man and woman, they were equal as is the general relationship between men and women and God and as today for those who are in Christ. There is no distinction of male and female at the cross. Galatians 3:26-28 Don’t forget however, that Adam and Eve were married. Gen 2:23,24: In the matrimonial state, there is another ordinance handed down from God that the Husband is to be the head of the union in all areas. 1Corinthians 11:2,3: Ephesians 5:23,24: 1Peter 3:7: As men and women, separate from the marriage union, stand before Christ, they are equal and Christ is the head. In the union of marriage, you have the coming together of two distinct persons into one flesh. Although they are one, they are still distinct individuals, and God has set man up as the head of this union. So when you ask for the manifestation of the consequences depicted in Genesis 3:16-17, I see the manifestation taking place on two very distinct levels. The twisting of this to place man above woman in general, and the use of this mandate in the matrimonial union, the latter of which is appropriate. There were instances in the primeval church in which women would have to serve as the spiritual head of the marriage union, as “Paul” makes reference to a non-believer being sanctified through a believing spouse. 1Corinthains 7:12-14: But after the Gospel had been effectually preached, and as the Word spread, we know that we are not to be unequally yoked. 2Corinthians 6:14: So we know taking an unbelieving spouse is to be refrained from. Therefore, among the earliest believers, you have to acknowledge that there were possibly some instances of the woman being the spiritual head, at least for a time. Now however, we have the given explicit instruction on how to function as man and wife, as has been previously posted in response to you. This is always the standard but often is not adhered to. Men are specifically instructed on how to treat their wives, and wives are instructed on how to treat their husband. The manifestation of this in today’s era is that you see the mandate being adhered to and functioning properly which leads to a healthy relationship as both parties submit to God’s will. Or you see it malfunctioning were one or both parties fail to submit to God’s will and there is inevitable strife within the marriage union, power struggles, selfishness and others. Eph 5:28-33: Husbands and wives you see, belong to one another. 1Corinthains 7:3,4: 3 God put His ordinances into effect and though we may not understand fully why, we need to acknowledge that they benefit us entirely. Back to the original verses to be discussed. I like what Albert Barnes stated in reference to it: …”The third part of her sentence refers to her husband - “Thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.” This is evidently a piece of that retributive justice which meets us constantly in the administration of God. The woman had taken the lead in the transgression. In the fallen state, she is to be subject to the will of her husband. “Desire” does not refer to sexual desire in particular. Gen_4:7. It means, in general, “turn,” determination of the will. “The determination of thy will shall be yielded to thy husband, and, accordingly, he shall rule over thee.” The second clause, according to the parallel structure of the sentence, is a climax or emphatic reiteration of the first, and therefore serves to determine its meaning. Under fallen man, woman has been more or less a slave. In fact, under the rule of selfishness, the weaker must serve the stronger. Only a spiritual resurrection will restore her to her true place, as the help-meet for man.” Stand in His Grace, WOS PS. Stj, From Easton’s Bible Dictionary: “In New Testament times the prophetical office was continued. Our Lord is frequently spoken of as a prophet (Luk_13:33; Luk_24:19). He was and is the great Prophet of the Church. There was also in the Church a distinct order of prophets (1Co_12:28; Eph_2:20; Eph_3:5), who made new revelations from God. They differed from the “teacher,” whose office it was to impart truths already revealed.” I’ll also provide the following, focusing on verse 22: Deuteronomy 18:18-22: 18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. 19 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him. 20 But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. 21 And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? 22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him. And then: John 2:18 –19: 18 Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things? 19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Acts 10:39 – 41: 39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: 40 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; 41 Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. Did he not foretell the future and… on more than one occasion, accurately? Those with Him also understood: John 6:14 Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. Here is something interesting from Matthew Henry regarding John 6:14: “III. Here is the influence which this miracle had upon the people who tasted of the benefit of it (Joh_6:14): They said, This is of a truth that prophet. Note, 1. Even the vulgar Jews with great assurance expected the Messiah to come into the world, and to be a great prophet, They speak here with assurance of his coming. The Pharisees despised them as not knowing the law; but, it should seem, they knew more of him that is the end of the law than the Pharisees did. 2. The miracles which Christ wrought did clearly demonstrate that he was the Messiah promised, a teacher come from God, the great prophet, and could not but convince the amazed spectators that this was he that should come. There were many who were convinced he was that prophet that should come into the world who yet did not cordially receive his doctrine, for they did not continue in it. Such a wretched incoherence and inconsistency there is between the faculties of the corrupt unsanctified soul, that it is possible for men to acknowledge that Christ is that prophet, and yet to turn a deaf ear to him.” So to answer your question, yes He is a prophet and He is a prophet, great among all prophets. He is our Lord and God as well. Stand in His grace, WOS |

I’m assuming you are referring to discussing this particular topic??? If I’m wrong, then there are many of us who should hang it up for a while for in our passion, we have many strongholds that need weakened as well and our good brothers and sisters who participate in this forum can be used by God for that very purpose. Be strong in the Lord and continue to seek His wisdom and knowledge while relying on Him and His promises. Ephesians 4:11 – 15: 11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; 15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: I know that I have much growing to be done and actually look forward to it. Dear gospel, Welcome to the forum. I noticed in your rather long post, that not once did you refer to homosexuality as being sinful. Is it your position that it is not? Aren’t we called to edify others and inform them when they might be missing the mark, or am I not understanding what scriptures teach concerning admonishing, teaching or rebuking or edifying? 1Thesollonians 5:14 And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 2Timothy 4:2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 2John 1:9 Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. Sometimes harsh answers aren’t necessarily harsh but simply the truth viewed as being harsh. I would much rather someone be harsh and truthful and have a concern for the well being of my soul than have them not want to offend and not properly instruct me in fear of hurting my feelings. “Scripture is not a weapon”? With what shall I defend myself with then? Ephesians 6:13-20: 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. For someone who claims not to think too highly of the doctrines of men, you sure so hold onto them tight enough. We are all sinners friend, declared so by the sovereign God. That's a fact. Dear terri shannon, To answer your question, you won’t find that specific phrase in the Bible. It is a term or phrase adapted from doctrines and used to help teach of a few things I believe. It may not even perform to task that well. However… First it concerns the “perseverance of the saints”. Secondly I think it speaks to, if only in part, the “doctrine of election”. Both of these subjects have been discussed much on the forum. If you would enter either perseverance or election into the search box, I’m sure you will find a bunch of information and I even urge you to do so. Quite simply, it is God who graciously saves us through faith in His Son. So why would we even consider that there would be anything we or another could do to change that. If God saves, you can rest assured that He will not fail, so… once you are saved, you are saved eternally. John 10:27 – 30: 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. 30 I and my Father are one. Philippians 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: Stand in His grace, WOS |

Hey Hoppy, I too am a Westminster sort of guy, I think? I think Chapters 10 and 17 address the question at the top of this thread. I think the site reference you made however was perfectly fine. I just thought a different section addressed the question better. But that’s how I view the once saved always saved, sort of as a prelude to election and perseverance. The phrase itself doesn’t really explain much, but it should lead us into digging deeper into the individual doctrines. I think your reference was fine. Stand in His grace, WOS |

Dear Cheri, I think we need to understand, that the natural branches weren’t simply cut off to make “room” for the gentiles, but because of their “unbelief”. Unbelief on our part will result in the same. That’s the warning isn’t it? However, God’s elect will never be permanently cut off. As with the natural braches removed God can graft them back in. Romans 11:23 And even they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again. Matthew Henry puts this into perspective that might be easier to understand. By God’s grace we are brought in and by His strength we stand: “Grace is given, not to make us proud, but to make us thankful. The law of faith excludes all boasting either of ourselves or against others. “Do not say (Rom_11:19): They were broken off that I might be grafted in; that is, do not think that thou didst merit more at the hand of God than they, or didst stand higher in his favour.” “But remember, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. Though thou art grafted in, thou art still but a branch borne by the root; nay, and an engrafted branch, brought into the good olive contrary to nature (Rom_11:24), not free-born, but by an act of grace enfranchised and naturalized.”… …“By what means thou standest: By faith, which is a depending grace, and fetches in strength from heaven. Thou dost not stand in any strength of thy own, of which thou mightest be confident: thou art no more than the free grace of God makes thee, and his grace is his own, which he gives or withholds at pleasure. That which ruined them was unbelief, and by faith thou standest; therefore thou hast no faster hold than they had, thou standest on no firmer foundation than they did.” [2.] “On what terms (Rom_11:22): Towards thee goodness, if thou continue in his goodness, that is, continue in a dependence upon and compliance with the free grace of God, the want of which it was that ruined the Jews - if thou be careful to keep up thine interest in the divine favour, by being continually careful to please God and fearful of offending him.” The sum of our duty, the condition of our happiness, is to keep ourselves in the love of God. Fear the Lord and his goodness. Hos_3:5.” – Matthew Henry Stand in His grace, WOS |

Dear Cheri, I understand the question you have. Romans 11:23 answers that very well I thought. Like I’ve said a few times throughout the thread, “once saved always saved” is only a prelude to deeper doctrines and the phrase itself does not really represent those doctrines well. One must dig into perseverance and election which is what the phrase itself alludes to. I would recommend you do that. With that, I think we need to take searchers advice and leave this discussion and let those still wondering to search out the history for themselves. Stand in His grace, WOS |

135 | Quries about Christmas? | NT general | Wild Olive Shoot | 211781
Dear JB, Welcome to the forum. I don’t know; Luke chapter 2 appears to be pretty convincing evidence do you not agree? The holiday many celebrate as Christmas, though admittedly it has become more commercial than anything, is and was in its essence, recognition of His birth. Is there another day, beside His crucifixion and resurrection that was so important in God’s redemptive plan for His own? He had to be born in order to fulfill His promise because that is what He declared. He’s a wonderful and wise God. The birth of Christ was first declared by God (Genesis 3:15), foretold by God’s chosen prophets (Isaiah 9:6, Psalms72:17, Micah 5:2), announced by angels (Luke 2;10, 11, Matthew 1:20, 21), despised by the devil ( Matthew 2:13) and longed for by many (Genesis 49:18, Isaiah 25:9). If you choose to honor Him by recognizing His birth on what we call Christmas day, you are in good company. If you choose not to due to lack of biblical evidence, you are also in good company. This question intrigues me every year, every time I see it. Christmas is a personal choice. You either choose to honor God on this day by recognizing the incarnation, the birth of our Savior, or you choose to honor God on this day in recognition of something else or nothing at all. As for me, it is another day to attempt in some way to give Him the glory He deserves. Yes I put up a tree, I surely don’t worship it. I exchange gifts. I surely don’t think this somehow diminishes my witness. I sing carols, well mostly just hum them; my voice isn’t nearly as beautiful as some of the words used in them that express adoration of our Savior and God. And I make sure those I have a chance to witness to, especially my children, understand what it is we are actually acknowledging; The grace of God in giving us a Savior. Historically you can investigate and see approximately when and where “Christmas the holiday celebrated on December 25th” came to be. But biblically what it recognizes is a very important piece of God’s redemptive plan. So long as your heart is truly guiltless before God with faith in His Son, do whatever glorifies Him. Do it often. Do it on December 25th or on February 24th. Even better yet, how about each and every day between and including and then some. Those who refuse to worship and honor God on December 25th claiming it is because of its pagan origin, simply miss a day to worship and honor God. What do we gain in that? Arguably nothing and I would venture to say we actually lose. I’m thankful for our Savior. Without His birth, where would we be? Still longing and with less hope I imagine. We see God kept His promise in giving a Savior. We now know He will keep His promise with His return. Stand in His grace, WOS |

I’m as unqualified as they come, so even if I tried, I don’t believe I could nitpick and would truly not want the same done to me, as I do make many errors or misstatements and have so much more to learn.
