121 | is selling in a church building fine? | John 2:13 | Sir Pent | 59243
I’m going out on a limb here to disagree with a practice that is becoming common in many churches in America today. That practice is selling food in the church. I believe this is wrong for many reasons. From most important to least important: 1. The true purpose of a church service is to worship God as a family of believers. The service is FOR GOD, not for people. When churches put on elaborate entertainments, and let people bring popcorn into the sanctuary, they are profaning a holy place and turning a worship service into just a show. 2. The Bible warns us as Christians to not only avoid evil, but even the appearance of evil. Even if the proceeds of the sale of food does go into the Mission Fund or whatever, many people (especially visitors) will not know that. With all of the scandals that have been so publicized about Christian ministries embezelling large amounts of money for their own personal gain, it would be very easy for them to jump to some wrong conclusions. 3. The food will cause division within the church. There will be some who think it is wrong and others who will think it is right. There will be some who buy it and are satisfied, and others who will not have the money and will be hungry and envious. There will be some who are honest and turn in all the money, and others who will give in to temptation and will keep some for themselves. There will be some who will try to pay attention to the service, and there will be others who will be crinkling the wrapping, or crunching the chips, and making it difficult for those around to focus. 4. It’s good for us all to be able to spend a few hours once a week focusing on God, instead of our stomachs. 5. There’s six other days in the week, when you could have a bake sale out in the parking lot, to raise money. |

122 | was archangel michael considered Hisson | John 3:16 | Sir Pent | 61879
No. Jesus is God's ONLY BEGOTTEN SON. Out of curiosity, why do you keep asking questions about the archangel Michael.
123 | What is Christianity? | John 3:16 | Sir Pent | 119292
My answer........................................... Hi Chummypupcy, You have asked a very big question to which one could answer in a variety of ways. One way to define Christianity is to look at what beliefs are consistently upheld. I would recommend that you type in the number 114284 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen. This will take you to a post by Emmaus, who included the 2 most famous creeds (Apostle's and Nicean) and some scripture to back them up. Another way is to define some of the most important concepts in Christianity. I would recommend that you type in the number 18160 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen. This will take you to the first of 2 posts that I once wrote to do this very thing. A third way to explain what Chirstianity is would be to talk about it in terms of the relationship that we have with God. I think that this is the most complete understanding of what it is, however, it is also the hardest to explain in an objective manner. I would say that being a Christian means that you have a relationship with Jesus Christ where He is your savior. I would also say that you have a relationship with God where He is your Lord and friend. |

125 | Jesus showed he is God? | John 10:30 | Sir Pent | 112550
My answer........................................ Hi Cryst9m, Yes, I have wondered about how Jesus showed that He was God. In fact, there was a time when I believed that Jesus was not God. However, I later discovered the truth of God's deity, and now love Him as my savior, lord, and friend. As for the Bible, there are many places that record ways that Jesus showed He was God. EdB has listed several of these. I would point you to Romans 1:4, which talks about how Jesus was declared to be God because of the ressurection. |

126 | Are there 4 meanings for the word love? | John 15:12 | Sir Pent | 113150
My answer............................... Hello tjtmt, I do not know for sure the answer to your question, as I suppose different people would define and categorize "love" in different ways. However, I think that this would cover what a large number of people would say. I know that there were at least 4 different Greek words that we translate into English as "love. They were "agape", "philia", "storge", and "eros". "Agape" is usually defined as unconditional or unselfish love. "Philia" is the love between friends. "Storge" is the love between family. And "Eros" is the love of attraction (usually physically). |

127 | Is God in absolut contrl over all things | Acts 4:24 | Sir Pent | 61378
Personal Note ......................................... Thanks for starting this new thread. That last one was so long it took too long to load up. I am disappointed that we have not come to consensus yet, but I am not giving up hope yet. In another recent post, our friend and colleague Hank said that he doubted that any consensus would be possible with regards to this whole Calvin vs. Arminian debate. I hope that we will be able to show that, given enough level headed patience that it is possible after all. In my next post, I’ll pick up where we left off by responding to your post from the previous thread. (For any future readers of this thread do a search for post number 61209, and just read that part of the thread to get some background for the subsequent discussion in this thread). |

128 | What evangelist ran to meet an official | Acts 8:26 | Sir Pent | 116992
Answer and a question................................................ Welcome to the forum JaniceTillman, The answer to your question is Philip, and the story can be found in Acts 8:26-40. I also have a question for you. You have posted 7 times to the forum, and they have all been questions. None of them seem to be related. Why are you asking these questions? It gives the appearance that you have a list of questions (ie. a test for a Bible class), and are just using this forum to save you the effort of searching. Do I guess correctly? |

129 | Resurrection Sunday or easter? | Acts 12:4 | Sir Pent | 113147
The other side................................ Hello Justme, Makarios, and Morant61, I hesitate to come disagree with all three of you who I respect and appreciate so much on this forum. However, I suppose someone should make the case for Easter being OK :) There once was a car company called "Datsun". However, it is now called "Nissan". The Nissan company learned many things from the history of the Datsun, but has also added their own flavor to their cars. Similarly, there once was a holiday called "Passover". It was pretty much only celebrated by Jewish people in one small part of the world. However, it had a great purpose of remembering God's salvation of their people from death and slavery in Egypt. Now there is a holiday called "Easter". It is celebrated by people of all races, all over the world. It also has a great purpose to remember the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made in order to bring salvation to all people from death and slavery to sin. The word "Nissan" is also historically the name of a month of the year, but no one thinks of that when they think of "Nissan". They just think of the car. Similary, the word "Easter" may have historical roots in a false pagan god named "Ashtar", but no one thinks of that when they think of "Easter". They just think of the resurrection of Christ (and chocolate). It seems to me that Shakespeare was correct when he said, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet". Therefore, I don't think that calling the holiday "Easter" is a big deal or a bad thing. |

130 | what is the longst name in the bible? | Acts 20:15 | Sir Pent | 120526
A bit of comedy...................................................... Hi Voliefe2, Perhaps the longest name in the Bible is the place where Paul went after Samos and before Ephesus. That place's name has a "mile" in it. P.S. Where do these trivia questions come from? |

131 | How to know God just from seeing nature? | Rom 1:20 | Sir Pent | 22207
Finding God in Nature, part 2 ................. When I look at the world the first thing that I notice is that it exists. I know this is obvious, but it is important. I also know that it is illogical for something to exist without having a beginning. So how did everything get here? One must believe that either it was always here and had no beginning, or "Something" else was always here and made everything. Now since it is illogical for anything to exist without beginning, then the most logical answer would be that only one "Thing" broke this logic as opposed to all things breaking the logic. In other words, it makes more sense to believe that only one "Power" always existed than to believe that the star in the sky, and the bird in the air, and rock on the ground, etc. have always existed (in some form of either energy or matter). Similarly, the existence of nature leads one to believe that there is an Eternal Power, who created the universe, because it is the most logical explanation. |

132 | i do believe..but this troubles me | Rom 1:27 | Sir Pent | 116521
My perspective as a scientist...................................... Hello Ptgard05, In you post you mentioned that the Bible condemns homosexuality. You also said that you believe that science has proven that homosexuals are born that way. Finally you correctly say that God wouldn't condemn someone for something that they were forced into from birth. That only leaves two possibilities. Either the Bible does not really condemn homosexuality (which you seem to be hoping and trying to prove), or people are not really born in such a way that they are forced to commit homosexual acts. It is interesting that you seem to doubt your understanding of the Bible more than you doubt your understanding of science. I am a scientist with my degree in Chemistry/Biology, and I work in research and development at a biotech company. I have also been a Christian for a very long time. Speaking with experience in both areas, I can say with confidence that you are correct in your understanding of the Bible and incorrect in your understanding of the science. |

133 | read last statement | Rom 1:27 | Sir Pent | 116567
I'll answer your question, will you answer mine?................. Hello again Ptgard05, Your post about your relative was written after mine, however, I have read it now. I understand that you believe your relative to be honest, but that does not change the fact that his claims and personal experience have not been proven in respected scientific literature. Now how about my question. Since science is not definite on the issue, why do you question the Bible which is definite? Do you doubt the word of God because of the word of your relative? |

Try to compare apples to apples..................................... Hello again Ptgard05, You are correct that there are more homosexuals than kleptomaniacs. However, there are many more people committing adultery than there are homosexuals. So don't belittle Hank's post by picking and choosing. |

137 | Is iT possible to live without sin? | Rom 6:2 | Sir Pent | 23574
Contrary View .............................. Dear Resurrectioner, I am not prepared at this time to do a full discussion on this topic, but I just wanted to let you know that I think that it IS possible to live a life without sin after salvation (not before). This doctrine is called "Entire Sanctification", and you can find some posts on the subject by doing a search for those words. |

138 | Why Jesus called Savior? | Rom 6:23 | Sir Pent | 112454
Answer................................... Dear Cryst9m, Jesus is called savior, because he has "saved" all who accept Him from sin and death. We have all sinned (Rom 3:23), and we all deserve to die (Rom 6:23). But because Jesus died for us on the cross, He has saved us from that punishment. |

140 | Why did God allow Job's children to die? | Rom 8:28 | Sir Pent | 65883
My Personal Experience ............................ Dear Williw02, This is a very hard question. I am a man who has had two of his own children die, so I begin to understand the pain that Job must have felt. The only answer that is of any comfort to me, and makes any sense is that it was part of God’s overall plan. No God didn’t personally kill Job’s children, but He did allow Satan to kill them. I have to believe that this was becuase it was one small part of God’s complete plan for the universe, and as such it would all work out for good in the end. As for the children themselves, as long as they had faith in God like their father Job, then they were actually going to a better place to be with the Lord. I hope that this is helpful for you, and if you have any more questions on this subject, feel free to ask me either on this forum, or at my email address listed in my personal profile. |
