21 | How inspired is the NAS Bible today? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 15780
Wrap-up, consensus of this thread: I would like to try to start something new here. When a thread has been responded to by a variety of posters, it can be difficult to find an overall answer to the original question. Therefore, I think it would be helpful to add a consensus statement to the end of these threads after either it seems that all ends are tied up or new posts seem to cease. Since I asked the original question in this thread, I will humbly attempt to summarize these ideas at this time. After reflection, it appears that the majority of posts are in agreement that God has played an active role in bringing the modern versions (such as the NASB) to the people in today's world. The differences arise in what people call this intervention, and to what degree people believe that it happened. Some quotes from many posters involved: Charis - "Inspiration continues." Hank - "God goes about His buisness of guarding and preserving the purity of His word." Open Mind - "God?s inspiration of the Bible works above the level of the text." Retxar - "God?s divine guidance in preserving His Word" Schwartzkm - "God has aided in keeping the Bible" Sir Pent - "God has inspired the people at each step in the process of bringing it to the masses." Tim Moran - "God has preserved His text throughout the years." Most posters do not believe that God put words in the translators minds, or physically directed the hands of the people who copied the scriptures. However, it seems that most posters believe that God has, in some way, actively maintained the truth of His message to mankind in the text itself and outside of the text as the reader is inspired by the Holy Spirit to have understanding. Some call it "inspiration", some call it "preserving", some call it "aiding", but the consensus is that God has been involved in the process, not only of the original writing of the Bible, but also of its copies and translations. The reason why I believe this is important to us as Christians, is that it confirms that the Bible is as true today as it was to the Christians in the Early Church. It supports the belief that the Bible is still authoritative for our lives, and that we can trust that it is still the Word of God. Lastly, it is of encouragement to all of the believers who have not had the opportunity to study Greek or Hebrew. It lets them know that even reading the Bible in their native tongue will enlighten them (if their hearts are open) to the critical message which God wants them to know. If anyone should come to this thread in the future, and have further questions, please feel free to email me at: markundy@hotmail.com |

Peches, I don't know who you are responding to by posting this question. I didn't think anyone accused you of using drugs, why did you bring that up? Also, as for whether this is a good forum for you, I think it is. I do want to warn you though, that things will probably not come easy for you. Because your beliefs are different from most of the people here, many of your posts may not be received with great appreciation. At the same time, I think that the people here could help you learn many important things about God. And I think that your passion for God could be inspiring to everyone else. I guess what I'm trying to say is please stick around and be patient with the people on this forum. Try not to feel like anyone is attacking you personally so that you can avoid getting defensive. Together we can all grow closer to Christ, and our love for Him can increase. |

24 | is baptism necessary for salvation? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 16785
Dear Bill-T, Please type in "baptism necessary" in the Quick Search box (top right of screen). This will lead you to at least 32 posts from several threads that cover this topic. The very short answer is that the general consensus (although some disagree) is that baptism with water is NOT necessary for salvation, but should definately be done. |

25 | Advise on contradictions found in bible | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 17552
Dear Benjibabs, I appreciate that you are wanting to help the person who sent you these questions. I also believe that there are definite explanations for each of these "appearant contradictions". However, since there are so many of them, would you mind splitting this into several questions with only one or two "contradictions" in each one? I think that would help to keep the threads from getting overly long and complicated. I will share my thoughts on the first one about the lineage of Jesus' father Joseph. I have not studied this, but something just jumped out at me. I would guess that Jacob was Joseph's father and He'-li is Joseph's mother. If you look at those two geneologies, they both trace back to king David, but are completely different from there on. The Matthew account goes through king David's son Solomon. The Luke account goes through king David's son Nathan. I think the message that God has for us is that Jesus was a descendant of king David. In addition, it is interesting that this is true even in more than one branch of His family tree. |

27 | Christian Primer Terms? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 18160
Christianity in a Nutshell part 1 Dear Charis, My friend, what you ask requires a tremendous amount of work. Perhaps that is why my colleagues (who probably responded more wisely than I) suggest just looking at a catechism. However, I didn't think of that, so instead I spent the whole day putting this together off the top of my head. I very much hope that it is helpful for you. God - a being who is: omnipotent (all-powerful, Jer 32:17), omniscient (all-knowing, Ps 147:4-5), omnipresent (exists everywhere at once, Eph 4:10), transcendant (is distinct from everything else in the universe, Ps 97:9), imminant (is directly and personally involved with the universe, Heb 1:3), and whose primary character traits are love (1 John 4:8) and holiness (Ps 99:9). Trinity - the idea we use to understand the three persons who make up God. They are called the Father (Eph 4:6), the Son Jesus Christ (John 1:1), and the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:3-4). They are all part of one being (God) and work toward the same overall purpose. Yet they also have individual nuances of personality and primary functions in our lives. God the Father - The first part of God who is primarily responsible for the creation and sustaining of the universe (Gen 1:1). His will also determines the words and actions of the overall Trinity (Luke 22:42). God the Son - Also known as Jesus Christ. The second part of God who is primarily responsible for providing a way to reconcile mankind to God (1 Tim 1:15). He did this by the incarnation, His teaching ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection (2 Cor 5:18). Incarnation - A part of God temporarily limited some of His characteristics as God to become completely human (Phil 2:5-7). The Christmas story is the record of this event, when Jesus Christ was born as a baby (Luke 2:11-12). Crucifixion - Jesus Christ was injustly accused, convicted, and punished with death by hanging on a cross (Luke 23:22-24,47). He allowed this to happen so that God?s plan of salvation, justification, and redemption could be completed (Rom 3:24-25). Resurrection - After being dead for parts of three days, Jesus Christ came back to life, and appeared to many people (Luke 24:5-7). He continued to teach for a short time, and prepared the way for the Holy Spirit to come (Acts 1:3). God the Holy Spirit - The third part of God who is primariy responsible for helping Christians to live according to God's will. He assists in understanding of God's messages to mankind both directly to individuals, and through the Bible. (Rom 8:26 and John 14:26) Sin - These are thoughts, words, and actions, which all people have committed that go against the desires of God (Rom 3:23). The punishment deserved for committing even one of these is death and Hell (Jam 2:10 and Rom 6:16). The Fall - This was the effect of the first sin ever committed. The first person to ever live (Adam) chose to commit a sin (disobedience) against God (Gen 3:11-12). As a result there was both immediate punishment (banishment from the Garden of Eden, Gen 3:23) and punishment for the rest of time (the beginning of the Sinful Nature, Rom 5:12). Sinful Nature - This describes how after "the Fall" mankind has had a natural instinct to commit sins (Rom 7:18). Salvation - This is the idea that God has provided a way for individuals to be "saved" from, or to escape the punishment that they deserve for the sin in their life (John 3:16). However, God cannot just ignore their sin, there must be a compensation. Justification - This is the idea describing the compensation that God made. Instead of all individuals having to be eternally punished for their sins, one perfect individual (Jesus Christ) suffered in their place (1 Pet 3:18). Redemption - This is the idea that God has provided a way to not only take care of sins, but to also "redeem", or restore mankind to their state before "the Fall" (Gal 2:20). The old self, with the sinful nature, is killed, and a person becomes a new creation that can once again commune with God (2 Cor 5:17). |

28 | Is killing during war a sin? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 18820
Search Recommendation ............................ Welcome to the forum Los. You have asked a question which is both complicated, and yet very relevant to the current condition of our country and world. There have been at least a couple of threads in the past that have focused on this issue. I would recommend that you begin by reading through those, and then let us know if you have any further questions. Try doing a search in the top right corner of the screen for "called to never kill" to find a post of mine in one thread. Also search for "old new fundamental" to find a post of mine in a second thread. I hope that these will be helpful for you. |

31 | How can we tell figurative from literal? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 19552
Summary of Previous Posts....................... From a search of previous threads, I have found only limited answers. The most common are: 1. The Holy Spirit will tell you. 2. Church leaders will tell you. Neither of these are very objective 3. Decide based on the type of literature. 4. Figures of Speech are obviously figurative. These can lead to problems. For example, the Creation story is written in the form of ancient poetry, and figures of speech vary between cultures. 5. Descriptions use "Phenomenal" language. (ie. the sun rises) 6. Parables, symbols, and "picture stories" are figurative. The problem here is, who decides whether something is one of these things. |

32 | Sir Pent, are you C or A? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 20228
Question Answered .............................. Dear Bill Mc, You caught me :) I actually left off my particular leaning on purpose to see whether my responses indicated one way or the other to people. This was another way to tell if it really made any difference to the Christian life. However, since you asked me specifically, I'm glad to let you know. I consider myself to be a Wesleyan, Arminian, Holiness Christian. I would point out that that description is in the order importance that I would rank those from least to most. |

33 | What is a good bible version for study? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 20243
Please do a search ............................. Dear Myra, I am excited for you that you are beginning to study the Bible and fellowship with other Christians again. God has so many important things that He is looking forward to sharing with you if you let Him. The short answer to your question is that the NIV (New International Version) is a good Bible to start out with if you're looking for one that is accurate and easy to read. If on the other hand you are looking for a Bible for deeper study, I would recommend the NAS (New American Standard). It is also not difficult to understand. Also, this question has been asked before many times. Therefore, if you would like a much longer and in depth answer, just do a search (in the top right corner) for "best translation". |

36 | What can you get your prayer life back? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 20715
Support, Experience ............................. Dear Yogi, Tim and Hank have both answered you well. It is true that the key to praying is to just pray. It is also true that prayer in Christianity is much more free than in many other religions. The exact words that are used are not as important as the attitude of your heart towards God. This all being said, I would like to share a couple of ideas that have helped me in the past in my own prayer life. 1. Focus on several parts of prayer individually. A common way to do this is to use the acronym ACTS (adoration, confession, thanksgiving, supplication). First focus on praising God for who He is (for example: creator, all-loving, a good listener, etc). Second focus on repentance of the sins in your life (for example: not spending enough time with God lately). Thirdly, focus on letting God know how much you appreciate the blessings He has given you (for example: the ability to think, food to eat, the colorful trees to look at, etc.) Fourthly, focus on asking God for the desires of your heart (for example: your relative to get well, your spouse to get that job, yourself to find a good church, etc.) 2. A second idea that helped me in the past was to pretend that God was sitting next to me at the lunch table, or in the passenger seat of the car. Then I would just talk to Him as I would talk to a very close friend, who was right there with me. A good example of this kind of prayer is found in the movie "Fiddler on the Roof". The main character, named Tev'ya, talks to God often in this conversational manner. 3. A third idea that helped me in the past was to keep a prayer journal of sorts. I would write down things that I prayed for, and then later go back and mark the ones that had been answered. That was a good way for me to clearly see how God had listened to my prayers and worked in my life and the lives of those around me. I would also write down any thoughts that God brought to my mind during my prayer time so that I could remember them as well. I hope that you may find one or more of these ideas to be helpful in your own prayer life, as I did in mine. Remember though that they are only suggestions, and it is important that you don't get caught up in just praying one way all the time or it can become merely routine, and lose it's meaning. |

37 | Why do people lose interest and leave? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 21159
Dear Forumites, I have one idea that I think might help keep things fresh for long term members of our forum, while at the same time add significant value to this forum's usefulness. My idea is that individual members of the Forum could each volunteer to be responsible for one book of the Bible. Then over the next few months, they could each go through that book thouroughly adding comments and questions as they arise. This would help fill the void of so many verses that just haven't come up on their own. It would make a much more complete study aid for people looking for answers. And it would probably bring up a myriad of new thoughts and discussion topics that haven't been covered. I just think that we've been too REACTIVE on the forum so far, mainly responding to others questions and comments. Perhaps we should be more PROACTIVE by doing more complete and thorough Bible commentating. What does everybody think about this idea? Would anyone be willing to volunteer to take a book? |

39 | Marriage to a Catholic? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 21706
An Answer and a Question ........................ Dear JMR, In my opinion, the location of a wedding is not a moral issue. It is not wrong to get married in a Catholic church, or even in a courthouse for that matter. There are some related issues that could be a problem. Depending on the Catholic church, you might have to become a member of their church to get married there. Are you willing to do that? I fully believe that it is possible for a Catholic to be a Christian, but there are some specific teachings of the Catholic church which most protestants would not be willing to agree with. A final question is more personal. Just over a month and a half ago, you mentioned that the marriage would be about 3 years from then. Now it seems like you are already in the planning stages. Why the appearantly sudden shift in time tables? |

40 | Feel so lonely and down over this burden | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 59239
Mae64, I hurt for you that you feel alone and unsupported during this very difficult time in your familiy's life. You are correct that the Family of God should be there for you. The Bilbe commands us to "weep with those who weep". I would guess though, that there are friends in your church who do care about you and just don't know how to express it in a way that will not cause more hurt. Often people are trying to put themselves in your shoes, and knowing that they would feel sad and embarrassed by the situation, they think that it would only make you feel worse to talk about it. This is the wrong response, but perhaps this will give you some insight into the thoughts behind their actions. As for advice, I would suggest approaching your pastor about leading a jail visitation ministry from your church. This would provide a way for yourself and others in your church to visit not only your son, but also others who are there. Pointing out verses where Jesus talks about visiting those in prison, should be sufficient to get your pastor’s approval and support. There is also an organization called “Prison Fellowship Ministries”, which has a lot of resources and contacts that would be overjoyed to help you set something up. The website for them is: http://www.pfm.org Even though this is an extremely hard time for you and your family, it is also an opportunity for God to do amazing things in your family, your church, and your whole community. |
