1201 | Apostles mistaken? | Col 3:17 | charis | 940
Dear Ric, Are the examples of baptism recorded for us in the book of the Acts of the Apostles then invalid or mistaken? If everyone agrees on the 'formula' and the 'into the Trinity' theory, then why does so much controversy exist in almost every other area of the 'method' of baptism, including whether to baptize at all or not? I must tell you that it is uncomfortable to be 'swimming against the tide,' but I still find these arguments to be traditional, emotional and shallow. Without the single scripture, Matt 28:19, anyone doing a word study on baptism would come to the conclusion (and conviction) that it is proper to baptize in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Please, convince me with the Bible. In Christ Jesus.

1203 | In Jesus' name...except baptism? | Col 3:17 | charis | 929
"...do all in the name of the Lord Jesus..." COL 3:17 Except water baptism? I ask this question seriously. I am not Jesus Only. But it seems to me that this issue is very emotional. I asked before and got the patent answer, "The Lord Himself said..." I have heard others base their belief upon tradition. Admittedly, even some early church fathers baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost (Spirit). I also heard that the name of Jesus is an abbreviation of a 'fuller formula.' Fine. But that does not answer why we use one scripture to supercede many other scriptures. If we are to baptize according to the 'fuller formula,' should we not then do all things in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit? How is this reconciled with the numerous actions of the apostles in the name of Jesus, and the commands to use His name? Were our predecessors disobedient to the command of the Lord? Perhaps they were running out of time, and used the abbreviation? My friends and colleagues, I am not trying to be irreverent. These are valid questions. Whenever we study the Bible, we give weight to such arguments when discussing other topics. Please, answer from the Bible, trying not to be led by tradition or the commentary of others. My intent is unity, not division. I believe in the power of the name of the Lord Jesus. On a side note, please notice that it is not only the 'formula' that is an area of division concerning water baptism. Method, age, place, baptizer, etc. are all subject to 'differing views.' (i.e. division) I look forward to some good answers. (p.s. please don't SHOUT) In Christ Jesus |

1204 | Any consequences for the bad? | 2 Cor 5:10 | charis | 926
slillis20, I agree with your answer. Well said. What do you think, is there any consequence for the bad that is burned up? The word judgment speaks of a decision. I understand that it will be burned up and "He will again have compassion on us; He will tread our iniquities under foot. Yes, Thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea." Micah 7:19 Prior to this erasure, is there anything required of us? I have a personal theory about this, but want to ask your opinion. (And anyone else out there. [not 'out there']) In Christ |

1205 | Help with misled teen with gender issues | 1 Pet 5:7 | charis | 924
Dear SFriend, In Christ Jesus I write my advice. I have just read your question and the answers generated. Meaning no disrespect, I ask, have you consulted your pastor? From what I read in the Bible, God has provided you with a shepherd whose purpose is to help those in need. He has the spiritual authority to help you in this battle. I am not talking about professional training or licenses on the wall. You made no mention of your church or your pastor, but these have been His method of strengthening His people from the beginning. If your church cannot help you, I must wonder why not? A pastor is required to be there for you. I respect my colleague's suggestions for general help, but it seems you really need someone with a personal commitment to your family to find wisdom and healing in the Lord. My prayers in Christ Jesus.
1206 | What is the spiritual gift of faith? | 1 Cor 12:9 | charis | 923
I'll give it a try. v.7 states that the gifts are for the common good, and nine gifts are listed. It is possible there are more than nine, but to the Corinthians Paul believed these were what they needed. Each gift must be real, and effective. Apparently, they are given at the discretion of the Spirit, and possibly as a lifelong responsibility, as a service to the body of Christ. So, the gift of faith is different from saving faith (as you both stated) and seems to be a gift to the church through a chosen believer, whose ministry is to share the gift when God tells him to. This might be called the ability to help someone believe in the grace, and the power of the Lord. I do not think these gifts are the 'property' of the believer, or that can be used 'at will.' Rather, God uses said believer to bless (encourage)His people at a time chosen by God. I'm being very careful how I describe my understanding of this, because I have seen so many abuses of these gifts. Usually called 'MY' gift, and often bandied about like a 'spiritual sixgun.' Hope this answers the question. In Jesus.
1207 | Irreverence, not homosexuality? | Genesis | charis | 897
Don't shout, my friend, I can hear you just fine. Please back this up with scripture. Also, your rather coarse comments seem to be saying that all boys are 'almost homosexual.' Peace upon you in the Spirit of Christ.
1208 | God created evil? | Genesis | charis | 895
I don't buy it, melchizedekau. I do believe that God created all things, But I cannot believe He created all attitudes, all sin, and all evil. Or are you saying he only a portion of evil? I don't buy that, either. The 'boundary' thing is a bit too thin, and too philosophical. This seems to be saying that God tempted Adam. Also, this would be saying that God created Satan for the purpose of evil. This sounds like a strange form of puppeteering or entertainment. I believe that God created Lucifer, but Lucifer created Satan. God created the darkeness (obscurity), but does this mean evil? 1 John 1:5 "And this is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all." So, either the Bible is contradictory (impossible!) or these two scriptures are both correct. I definitely lean toward God having no darkness at all, including the blame for evil. In Christ Jesus. |

1209 | Is everything God created "good?" | 1 John 1:5 | charis | 892
Whoops! The sharp-eyed among you may have noticed that I answered the short question correctly, but the full question was exactly the opposite! So sorry. God did NOT create sin!
1210 | Is everything God created "good?" | 1 John 1:5 | charis | 891
Yes! 1John 1:5 NASB "And this is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all." God did indeed create Lucifer, the most beautiful of the angels. However, God did not create the sin of vanity, jealousy and greed that caused him to be cast out of heaven. As far as I can see, the Bible does not point to any earlier 'start' or 'cause' of sin and evil, and pins the blame completely on Lucifer (Satan). Entertaining thoughts in this line (i.e. maybe God is the culprit) can do no good, only harm. Psalm 62:8 "Trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah." In Christ Jesus, Amen! |

1211 | sins of father repaid by son? | Genesis | charis | 886
Ric, The NASB says "...visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children..." and the context seems say that the sin of one generation is passed on to the next, by example, not as a sin debt owed to God for 4 generations. Indeed, for man left to his own devices, this does seem to be the case. However, Jesus came that we may break this cycle. Even sons of men who do not know God (hate Him), can be set free from the curse of sin. Better yet, our children can be even closer to God if we teach them that victory earlier than we knew it. Praise the Lord Jesus. |

1212 | Irreverence, not homosexuality? | Genesis | charis | 885
Friend, could it be irreverence toward your father, not homosexuality? I don't see scriptural support for this supposition.

God created evil? Would you please elaborate, preferably with the Bible reference?
1214 | Who are the twenty four elders? | Rev 19:4 | charis | 871
No offence taken, dlnash. Idioms are a wonderful means of communicating the heart. Actually, many students of English know more idioms than Americans! (But their misuse or abuse can be comical or tragic) On a side note: My Dad, a pilot, used to say, "There are no stupid machines, only stupid operators." They must not have had computers back then :-)
1215 | Sounds good, scripture (pretty) please? | 1 Tim 4:8 | charis | 867
With a cherry on top? My friend, I am honored to have agreement with you. May there be much more agreement among us, by His Spirit! About supporting scripture, I can find no 'perfect' reference. How about Ecclesiastes, where the Preacher talks about excessive toil being vanity. I suppose that in the same way you cannot take money to heaven, neither can you take big muscles. As to 'couch potatoes,' Proverbs talks about laziness. As to an 'over-pumped mind,' Jesus spoke of the dangers of over-zealous religion often, citing the Pharisees, Saducees, scribes and lawyers as being close to the Law, but far from God. Sorry for the generalities. If I come up with something specific, I will post it. Let us continue to share! In Jesus.
1216 | Why do we disagree? | 1 Thessalonians | charis | 841
Friends, the uncomfortable answer would be sin. Though saved by grace, we are still influenced by sin. Looking at the history of the church, it appears that many divisions (denominations) were brought about by pride, arrogance, greed, and selfishness. If we were to try to believe that denominations were created by further revelation, then the most recent divisions would be the best, the closest to God. I don't think so. The word denomination means of a different name. A name different than Jesus the Christ. Any time we add a name to Christ, we divide Him. I don't claim to know Him better than another, I just know that He cannot be pleased with division. I fervently pray for unity, and I believe this forum (communication) will help. In Jesus.
1217 | So when did "evil" start? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 838
Was Lucifer 'tempted' to be vain? No, I don't think that God is responsible for that. As far as we are told, Lucifer was the first 'sinner,'and it had to start somewhere. Frankly, I am not sure I like the phrase 'good vs. evil.' Though I don't think you meant it in this manner, many people think of it as a battle between almost equal opponents. For the sake of those who watch too many movies, God Almighty is the Creator, and Satan is just a miniscule 'wannabe,' soon to be vanquished with a breath. Though we are now temporarily living in a place heavily influenced by this petty pretender, we are citizens of the kingdom of God, and will soon live there forever. Hallelujah! Amen. |

1218 | Who are the twenty four elders? | Rev 19:4 | charis | 836
Amen, my hyperbolist friend. I also believe that and deviation from truth should be called such and brought to the light of Christ. I, too, prefer the "pickles and rice" of Christian life. By the by, if you can help me get the software for a forum up and running in Japanese, I would be grateful ;-) Many blessings to you in Christ Jesus.
