1161 | Jesus closes the door? | Matt 18:17 | charis | 1101
Dear bjanko, And how did our Lord treat Gentiles and tax-gatherers? I well understand the need for church discipline. I also know that Jesus seemed to think that the sinners were capable of repentance. If I correctly understand your comments, Paul left a door open for reconciliation and repentance, but Jesus closed the door? I appreciate your comments. In Christ Jesus.

bjanko, you're no fun! I already said that.
1163 | Bible answer, please? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 1099
Dear bjanko, You think nothing of my thoughts? Fine. Tell me, could you be a little more Bible specific? You obviously have never been to a dinner where the host gave you so much food that you threw it all up on the table. (I am sorry, the analogy was perfect, but a little crude! ;-) Since you did not say your belief was based on religious edict from the church in Rome, I gather from your response that 1) you are male, and 2) your family is not yet complete, possibly not even started. (I apologize if my assumption is totally wrong) I agree wholeheartedly, children are a blessing from God. Mine are now teens, both a joy and a challenge. Both were born after my wife was healed from ovarian cancer. I understand blessing AND miracles. However, please give me some scriptures specific to the question before your zeal overcomes your common sense. I admire your desire to put your life in God's hands, having read all of your other comments and answers. I look forward to hearing more from you. In Christ Jesus.

1167 | Excommunication? | Matt 18:17 | charis | 1071
"And if he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax-gatherer." Matthew 18:17 "And if anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of that man and do not associate with him, so that he may be put to shame." II Thessalonians 3:14 Does this mean to 'disfellowship' or 'excommunicate' a brother? As in cutting him off permanently from all communication and fellowship? |

1168 | Does Bible support capital punishment? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 1070
Good Bible! Well thought out and well said, brother. (now that I am fairly certain of the gender.) I am certain that punishment according to the Bible would be much more effective than what we have, regardless of the faith or lack of faith of the perpetrator of a crime. I agree, incarceration is degrading and 'cruel and unusual' punishment, making it very difficult for a person to repent of his (or her) ways. In Christ Jesus.
1169 | Jewish Baptism in YHWH? | Col 3:17 | charis | 1069
Dear RCSCROLL, Jewish Baptism? I am aware of Israel being "baptized into Moses," and know about ritual cleansing for priests, Pharisees, and hand-washing by Jews, but all Jews required baptism in the name of YHWH? This is the first I have heard of this. Any references? I will look into this. Thanks for comments. By the way, please unlock CAPS, as it is hard to read in those narrow columns. In Jesus' name.
1170 | Flood in the air? | Gen 1:1 | charis | 1068
8,854 meters of water (assuming Mt. Everest was covered by 6 meters), multiplied by the surface area of the globe, accounting for the fact that the area will increase the farther from the center of the globe (I forgot what you call that), then subtract the volume of all the land mass above sea level, including the volume of all living things on the surface, minus the volume of the people and animals that boarded the ark, minus the volume of the gopher wood and other materials of the ark, minus the draft volume of the ark. Did I forget anything? Could this volume of water 'recede' into the atmosphere? Have fun! Answer-(I think) It must have! In Jesus.
1171 | why did God create the world | Gen 1:1 | charis | 1067
I like Xapis' answer! God wanted a people that would love Him and serve Him from their hearts, a people who would reciprocate to the best of their feeble abilities. If you think God created evil for His plan to work, search "God created evil?" for pros and cons. In Christ Jesus.
1172 | In Jesus' name...except baptism? | Col 3:17 | charis | 1065
My dear Xapis, I very much agree with your conclusion. If the heart is right and obedience to the command of the Lord (however he is taught by those around him, depending on THEIR belief) the baptism is effective by faith in He Who saves. But, I must say that you seem to be saying that it could depend on the 'level' of faith and-or the background of the believer. Is there a test to determine the appropriate 'formula?' Sorry! My tongue got stuck in my cheek. Xapis, please trust me that it is not my intention to allow depravity (even the 'paralleled' kind) to rule over my heart. My good friend and mentor, a Lutheran (but I forgive him:-), always used to say to me, "Let's not get wrapped up in our underwear!" when discussing our faith. (1,000 pardons if you are offended by this phrase) However, the name of Jesus is not just any word, and it is not a dispute, but a scholarly discussion. If you would look at my previous postings, and my original question, you would see that it is legitimate food for discussion. I accept your attempt to explain the (perceived) discrepancy with due consideration. I know that the Bible, by definition, cannot contradict Itself, and should not be divisive. I pursue truth and eventual unity of faith. It may be that this is 'hidden' truth, but I am fairly certain that God has revealed the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to us and to the world. However, I still see a lot of emotion and tradition in some of the postings I have read, as well as lots of study, and many good hearts. Please, let us continue in this great fellowship of study and discussion, even if you don't want to address this particular question any more. By the way, in case you or anyone else is interested, I baptize believers (not kids) saying, "Shu Iesu Kirisuto no mina ni yotte." ("In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.") myself. Blessings in Christ Jesus.
1173 | Eternal Security and 2 Peter 2:20 ??? | 2 Peter | charis | 1058
Sorry, jg8ball, not only did I misspell your 'name,' but I also sent the apology to the wrong place. Must be bad software, huh? (Oh, the shame! ;-) In Jesus.
1174 | blaspheming vs NT | Num 15:30 | charis | 1057
Dear getsmart, I think that we all blaspheme the Lord in some way or other, at some time or other. (Those of the Old Testament must have tried hard to hide it! Thank You Jesus for the New Covenant!) Now, however, to apply ourselves to denying the work of the Holy Spirit, Who wants us to know and serve God, is unforgivable. Also, it must take a lot of willfulness and effort to deny undisputable love and the knowledge of God. I hope and pray that the ability to battle against the Spirit is beyond my will. In any case, if it is fairly easy to blaspheme the Spirit, heaven will be a lonely place, huh? Use 'Search' on the left and enter "Guffaw" in the 'Word' box for additional comments.

1177 | Eternal Security and 2 Peter 2:20 ??? | 2 Peter | charis | 1053
Guffaw! LOL! RoFL! I just looked up Luke 14:2. Howl! Cacchination! (regaining composure) chuckle, chuckle. This discussion reminds me of me. Bless both of you saints. I am not Calvin's disciple, nor am I his 'pendulum swing' opposite number, Arminus' follower. I think both these guys let brains and brawn get out of hand, and denied the Spirit. I read with great interest these comments, and quite a few others in this line. I despise compromise for the sake of 'making everybody happy,' because obviously you cannot. However, I do believe the truth in this matter probably incorporates both arguments, in a much simpler manner than we are accustomed to. If Jesus were asked, He might answer, "Who?" Much in the same way, Paul asked, "Apollos who? Paul who?" (I Corinthians 3:4-9) Perhaps the word 'Election' with a capital "E" is the problem, or at least a great contributor. In a general sense, I must believe that God, without favor, offers the hope of salvation to all, regardless (irregardless? There IS such a word) of gender, race, location or situation. Knowing all things, God knows who will 'be there' at the final trumpet. There are there by His Grace, and by His grace alone. But those there DID respond, hopefully (a disjunct) with alacrity and continued response. We do seem to have an 'unforgivable sin' in Matthew 12 (unless of course believers are not believers without the Holy Spirit, assuming that everyone receives 'automatically'), but this can't be too easy to do, or none of us will qualify for 'election.' This is why, from a layman's point of view, I cannot accept 'once-saved-always-saved.' Surely, from God's divine viewpoint this may be true, but to us here, now, it is ludicrous. It is only to easy to say, "Right. Like Jim Jones." Our 'righteousness' of looking at things from God's eyes (impossible, anyway) alienates us from the down-to earth reality that most people perceive. Of course, I do not promote becoming an 'air-head' or 'loose-minded, loose-moraled(sorry)' emotional nitwit. (i.e. "Of course, a truly nice god would save EVERYBODY!") I do believe there is a balance. In my Bible, and in my heart (through the Spirit), I believe I am 'called.' Not only called to a specific ministry within His church, but generally called to be His. Thank You, Jesus. I know that I am stating both cases, indeed, this is my intent. I see, very clearly, pertinent arguments from both camps. Is it possible that both are valid, with a bit of moderation and the revelation of the Holy Spirit? I believe so! I would not want to 'wake up' in the Holy Presence, and find that one group or another was 'missing.' Please understand that I do not mean the same for all fringe aberrations of faith. Some will be shown to be just plain wrong. But, in this case, and perhaps several others, adjustment is necessary, not a total revamp. "...Let God is true, and all men liars..." Romans 3:4 May the peace AND truth be upon us all, in Christ Jesus. |

1178 | Is any type of contraception allowed? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 1047
Dear JMR, Good question! I don't think that the Bible expressly prohibits the use of contraceptives, BUT, it is the attitude of the user that is in question. If used for the purpose of 'safe sex' because you are not sure of your partner, God cannot be pleased with the attitude. This includes promiscuous sex, adultery, harlotry, homosexuality, pre-marital (trial) sex, etc. Another abuse would be selfish, such as, "kids would detract from my plans, my career, or even my ministry." The key word is 'MY.' If, however, you have a normal, healthy, natural Christian life, and decide that your family is complete, and that (to a certain degree, and led by the Holy Spirit) age, finances, marital unity, logic, etc. lead you to want to stop proliferation, I cannot see God saying either, "Take a chance on another child," or "Stop having sex with your mate." Another factor,of course,is your gender. A man seems to be able to be more legalistic about this than a woman. He doesn't have to bear the child, nor does he have (usually) as much responsibility in rearing them. The only 'pro-choice' (in this matter) that is Biblical is that a woman should have a say in how many. I belong to the former gender, but can see the latter's point of view. Finally the method of contraception is also important. Abortion is absolutely out! Some drugs are potentially dangerous, and operations are permanent. Great caution is necessary, as well as spiritual and medical counsel. As to Biblical support for my thinking, I don't think that it was an issue, as there were not many forms available. As abortion and some very dangerous concoctions were the only real options, it is no wonder that God did not speak in favor of these methods. I would be interested to hear, in the light of these comments, views from the 'other side.' I am sure there are some who would say the Bible forbids contraception, but I suspect that the view is a bit legalistic or assumptive. I pray that this portrays, if nothing else, a good argument based on my understanding of the intent of God toward us. Blessings in Jesus' name.
1179 | (still) God created evil? | Genesis | charis | 1040
By all means, but only after I extract my tongue from my cheek! K, this is a great forum! Indeed, if we get too serious and rigid, cracks form that our sly enemy could use to drive his wedge between us. Let us continue to be strong, but alive and resilient, to resist his insidious attacks. Re: the 'other' affair, you didn't miss the boat. A semi-repentance took place :-) In Christ Jesus. |

1180 | (still) God created evil? | Genesis | charis | 1018
Maitta! No mas! Please, I beg you, no more! I wanted to figure out your analogy, so thought I would print it out. Cut and paste refused! GPF! BSoD! Ater reset into safe mode, success! But after pasting into Word, my spell-check exploded. Terminal red-squiggles! Did you write the macro to hide your identity? You are correct, Mr G created Windows 9x AND Mr s! Ctrl-Alt-Del. Auto Update successful. Please reboot. Thank you, all is clear, now. In Christ Jesus.
