10961 | Superior Forgiveness | Heb 10:10 | DocTrinsograce | 125659
The book of Hebrews is all about the superiority of Christ. In this passage we see that in the old covenant the one offering a sacrifice did not have the full expiation of his sins. He had to return year after year and often more frequently than that. (If I had lived in those days I would have had to go to the temple daily!) Christ, however, afforded a superior sacrifice in that it is effectual for all believers for all time. Our full pardon is procured. We are sanctified and our sins perfectly expiated.
10962 | Being of sound mind... | Heb 9:17 | DocTrinsograce | 125658
This verse has always fascinated me. Even today we speak of a "last will and testament." This kind of language originated in scripture. It is clue that vouches for the origins of our legal systems in the Word of God. If a man writes a will, it does not activate without the death of the owner of the will. In the same way, the second covenant became effective upon the death of our Savior.
10963 | A Superior Tabernacle | Heb 9:11 | DocTrinsograce | 125657
The book of Hebrews is all about the superiority of Christ. In this passage, we see that the human body of Christ was a superior tabernacle to that which was given in the older covenant. The former was made by human hands. Christ was not begotten by human efforts, but under the power of the Holy Spirit. He did not come into the world in an ordinary way, but in a supernatural way.
10964 | Loving the Reproofs of the Word | Bible general Archive 2 | DocTrinsograce | 125653
"Question: How shall we know that we love the reproofs of the Word? Answer 1: When we desire to sit under a heart-searching ministry. Who cares for medicines that will not work? A godly man does not choose to sit under a ministry that will not work upon his conscience. Answer 2: When we pray that the Word may meet with our sins. If there is any traitorous lust in our heart, we would have it found out and executed. We do not want sin covered, but cured. We can open our breast to the bullet of the Word and say, 'Lord, smite this sin.'" --Thomas Watson (1620-1686)
10965 | His Chosen Angels | 1 Tim 5:21 | DocTrinsograce | 125650
This verse is the only one in scripture to use the adjective "chosen" associated with angels. Therefore, any conclusions we can derive from this expression will be speculative at best. Please give your opinion regarding this expression "chosen angels."
10966 | Key verse of the Bible? | Bible general Archive 2 | DocTrinsograce | 125649
The central theme of scripture is the redemptive power of God. This theme is embodied in the very person of Christ Himself. It is difficult to choose a single passage that expresses this since there are quite a few to choose from. But I'll pick 1 Peter 1:3 (but I'll cheat and quote verses 2 through 5): "Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time." |

10967 | KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, KINGDOM OF GOD | Matt 3:2 | DocTrinsograce | 125648
Just adding my 2 cents to an old post: To determine if "kingdom of heaven" and "kingdom of God" are the same thing, we need to find a passage where they are used interchangeably. Matthew is the only gospel that uses the phrase "kingdom of heaven" (over thirty times, in fact). The other gospels use the phrase "kingdom of God." So, our search will have to be limitted to Matthew. Matthew uses the phrase "kingdom of God" only five times. The only places where the phrases appear near one another is in Matthew 19:23-24, "Then said Jesus unto his disciples, 'Verily I say unto you, that a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say unto you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.'" Here Christ is talking about the same thing and He uses the phrase "kingdom of heaven" and "kingdom of God" as synonomous terms. Therefore, we can conculsively say that they are the same thing QED. |

10968 | Changing the Future | 1 Cor 11:31 | DocTrinsograce | 125641
What an awsome thought! Imagine, here is something that I can do that reaches forward into the future and has impact on that moment that I stand before the living God! To judge myself rightly, I must do so from the Word of God. I must search the scriptures and allow each passage to speak to my life today.
10969 | The Devolution of Man | Rom 1:23 | DocTrinsograce | 125640
The world speaks of the evolution of man. They would have us believe that man started out worshipping beasts, then birds, then man-like gods, and finally to an abstracted supreme being. This passage of scripture clearly shows that man has devolved in the oposite direction. Originally, man new the one true God, but by choice has jettisoned such knowledge for lesser gods. The order of this list tells the tale.
10970 | How do you meditate? | Josh 1:8 | DocTrinsograce | 125633
Good answer Mezan. I think it should be pointed out that meditating is not some kind of mystical experience or something. It is really just the lost art of thinking. In biblical terminology, when you meditate on something you are thinking about it, turning it over and over in your mind, seeing it from different directions. We used to use words like cogitate, ponder, contemplate. You chew over an idea when it is good food for thought. As believers, of all people, we should be practicing this every idle moment. Give your brain good food to chew on... get as much scripture into it as you can.
10971 | Galatians 3:19: ordained through angels? | Deut 33:2 | DocTrinsograce | 125606
When the Law was prescribed the Lord appeared with a great company of angels. Apparently it was articulated by the angels, rather than by the Lord. (The Lord reserved for Himself, however, the speaking of the promise; i.e., the enjoining of covenant.) You will see further statements refering to the angels participation in giving the Law in Psalms 68:17, Acts 7:53, and Hebrews 2:2.
10972 | Searching for the truth | 1 Cor 11:3 | DocTrinsograce | 125578
Moses Death answer: How: By the word of the Lord (Deut 34:5) Why: By the word of the Lord (Deut 3:26-27) Where: Land of Moab (Deut 34:5) When: Just before Israel entered Cannan (Deut 34:6) We also have a passing reference in Jude to Moses' body. |

10973 | Superior Covnenat | Heb 8:7 | DocTrinsograce | 125552
The book of Hebrews is all about the superiority of Christ. This passage introduces the idea of the superiority of the second covenant.
10974 | A Superior Hope | Heb 7:19 | DocTrinsograce | 125551
The book of Hebrews is all about the superiority of Christ. In this passage, we see that the fulfillment of the law brought about a better hope. A hope that is fullfilled in drawing close to our God.
10975 | Who is the subject of this verse? | Heb 4:10 | DocTrinsograce | 125544
Hi, justme! Thank you for making me feel welcome. :-) You can find the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith at www.founders.org/library/bcf/confession.html If you want to see this confession in "modern" English, there's a pretty good "translation" at www.vor.org/truth/1689/1689bc00.html I love the old creeds and confessions. They tend to sum things up so well... and almost every one of them grew out of believers dealing with heresy or error. Great stuff! Of course, first and foremost is the doctrine of sola scriptura. The scriptures are the sure anchor... everything must be grounded in that rock! |

10976 | Beware of lawyers,card readers | Deut 18:9 | DocTrinsograce | 125538
You might look at "scribes" in the NT -- they would be the equivalent to what we call lawyers today. Matthew 23:3 says to do what they say, but not what they do. However, Christ also said "woe unto you" to them 13 times in the Gospels. A prophets would say "blessed" or "woe;" The former was a blessing the latter a curse. The fact that these guys were cursed so frequently would lead me to think that we ought to beware of them! (Please don't construe this as a condemnation of the entire legal profession!)
10977 | Ezekiel 47, 1-12 and Revelation 22, 1-2 | Jer 2:13 | DocTrinsograce | 125537
The water reference in Ezekiel 47 and Revelation 22:1-2 do sound connected. From what I can find in my own tradition there seems to be some debate about how they ought to be connected in a prophetic way. Perhaps this is less of an issue in Roman Catholic tradition. Nevertheless, if I were to write on this, I would probably focus on the redemptive power of Christ. I think it can be clearly demonstrated that He is the living water (John 4:10 and Rev 7:17) that flows from the throne. The woman at the well was trying to drink from a broken cistern (trying to find fulfillment to her thirst through relationships with men). God offers this this water freely (Is 55:1) and in abundance... but oh how often we turn instead to broken cisterns! I'd also compare and contrast such passages as Isaiah 41:17-19, John 7:37-39, Psalm 102:16-17, etc. I look forward to seeing future posts from you, Brother Arek. God bless you, sir, as you search God's Word. |

10978 | beware of fortune tellers? | Deut 18:12 | DocTrinsograce | 125533
Yes, In the Law it states "There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God." Deut 18:10-13 In the OT if a prophet was not always correct all of the time, he was condemned as a false prophet. (So much for Jean Dixon!) Furthermore, if such folks don't point to the Triune God of scripture, they were to be avoided. See Deut 13:1-3 "If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul." |

10979 | Once saved, always saved? | Matt 27:5 | DocTrinsograce | 125531
Good comments, kalos! I am so thankful that it is the Lord Jesus Who is the "author and finisher" of my faith! What joy to serve such a God Who has done so much!
10980 | searching for the truth | 1 Cor 11:3 | DocTrinsograce | 125529
Amen, and again I say, Amen! Perhaps it is even more important for the man to set the example of fulfilling every vow smf being fully submitted to the headship of Christ! I love that Ephesians 5 draws out this wonderful picture of Christ and the church. God takes such pictures very seriously. (That's why Moses ended up dying in the wilderness.) But imagine a man in full submission to the Lord, carefully loving his wife, washing her in the Word, and presenting her back to the Lord and to himself. Just as Christ is doing with His bride! Would a Christian wife really have any difficulty submitting to such a man? I am truly blest by having a Proverbs 31 wife... but... Oh, Father, help me to be a husband fully submitted to You! |
