10941 | No Wine vs Not Much Wine | Luke 1:15 | DocTrinsograce | 125725
Bishops (presbytos) in 1 Tim 3:3 and Tit 1:7 are not to be given to wine. However, a deacon in 1 Tim 3:8 must not be given to much wine. Likewise, the aged women are not to be given to much wine per Tit 2:3. Do you think there it is significant that an elder must not be given to wine but the others not to MUCH wine?
10942 | Are christians promised 70 years of life | Bible general Archive 2 | DocTrinsograce | 125718
One might construe it as a promise. Psalm 90:10 states, "The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away."
10943 | The Holiness of God | Lev 10:3 | DocTrinsograce | 125717
Aaron rushed into the tent of Moses, the man of God. Grabbing the edge of his robes, Aaron, sick with grief, demanded to know why the Lord had struck down his sons, Nadab and Abihu. Why? How could God do this? Why??? Moses regarded his brother sadly, feeling great compassion for Aaron and his loss. "This is what the Lord meant when He said, 'I alone will treated as hollowed by those who come near Me! Before the people, I will be honored.'" Aaron sucked in his breath, as the full import of the words struck him. The Lord was Holy. One can only approach Him on His terms in the way He requires. Without another word, Aaron turns away. 10944 | The Holiness of God | Hab 3:16 | DocTrinsograce | 125716
A true encounter with the Lord always has the same result. His incredible Holiness causes us to see our incredible sinfulness. See Is 6:5, Luk 5:8, Job 42:5-6.
10945 | The Holiness of God | Luke 5:8 | DocTrinsograce | 125715
A true encounter with the Lord always has the same result. His incredible Holiness causes us to see our incredible sinfulness. Here, Peter, when he sees the supernatural control that Jesus has over nature, recognizes Him as Diety. Peter's own sense of unworthiness causes him to plead, "Go away!" See Is 6:5, Hab 3:16, Job 42:5-6.

10947 | The Holiness of God | Job 42:6 | DocTrinsograce | 125713
Job 42:5 says, I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear; But now my eye sees You; A true encounter with the Lord always has the same result. His incredible Holiness causes us to see our incredible sinfulness. See Is 6:5, Hab 3:16, Luke 5:8. |

10948 | Protoevangelium | Gen 3:15 | DocTrinsograce | 125712
This verse is called the "protoevangelium" by Biblical scholars. It is the first mention of the evangelical message. This is a great word to throw out in the middle of a Bible study! :-) |

10949 | Rose of Sharon: what type of flower? | Josh 12:18 | DocTrinsograce | 125710
Sharon is a plain to the West of Jerusalem that extends to the Mediterean Sea. The actual rose flower is, I think, a Damascus Rose which is a very bright white in color. Perhaps this is symbolicly connecting the beauty of Christ in His holiness. I can't find the passage that speaks to the beauty of God's holiness (sorry, I've got to get to church... perhaps someone else can find it). Lasharon in Josh 12:18 refers to this plain. |

10950 | Is it ever o.k. to say no to a brother | Matt 10:16 | DocTrinsograce | 125701
Very high praise indeed, kalos! I am also benefiting from your posts! However, I know you would agree, if there is any wisdom in anything I say it is entirely of the Lord. Left to my own devices I have only walked through fire (of my own kindling) spouting deception the while! By His grace, I have grown to love the Word of God, even though it often wounds me and even though I too often neglect it! I try to focus firmly on the scripture in these discussions because, as God's own, there are so many things that unite us (pastor reminded us today in Eph 2:11-22), so I don't want to cause argument. Yet I really want to be able to stand solidly for the truth (Titus 2:1,7). So, the long and the short of it is this: If I do or say something right, praise God because its all Him! If I don't, its me -- so in that case pray for me, because the Lord's correciton always comes! :-) Thank you for the encouragement, kalos! |

10951 | A Superior Home | Heb 13:14 | DocTrinsograce | 125700
The book of Hebrews is all about the superiority of Christ. In this verse we are reminded as elsewhere (Eph 2:19-21) that our hope is a superior city to any that has ever existed on this earth. A city built not by human hands (Heb 11:10), but one built by God Himself.
10952 | Is it ever o.k. to say no to a brother | Matt 10:16 | DocTrinsograce | 125696
Wow, hisown, this is a tough one. I would have to answer with "it depends." :-) The scripture tells us to be as wise as serpents and as harmless as doves. So I think one has to use a lot of wisdom. Remember, too, that Christ calls us to be men of our word (James 5:12), to pay our vows (Ps 22:25), not be theives (Ex 20:15), get out of debt quickly (Prov 6:1-3), and don't withhold payment (Prov 3:27). All of this comes into play. As a recovering drug adict, I never give money to someone who uses drugs. I feel strongly about this. On the other hand, if I am withholding from someone in need for my own selfish reasons, that isn't the proper motivation either. (Luke 6:30) So, again... I'd say it all depends. Sometimes there are no clear answers, only principles. |

10953 | Define Christian entertainment | John 14:12 | DocTrinsograce | 125687
I like Angel's reply. I don't know of any passages that specifically deal with the topic of entertainment. (Someone will probably object, but I think that the world needs a constant distraction in order to obviate their sense of guilt and emptiness. A lot of so called Christian music seems to be along these lines... and it also seems much more fleshly than spiritual, IMHO.) Now, this is not to say that entertainment is bad per se. After all, Christ himself was known to attend what we'd call parties today. However, He did so while glorifying and honoring God, so that would be our challange also. I guess the question is if entertainment fits Philippians 4:8 and it is not an abuse of Christian liberty, then its okay. (Now if I can only learn to put my money where my mouth is!) |

10955 | How does Romans 7 echo Paul's words | NT general Archive 1 | DocTrinsograce | 125684
I don't think the principles of each of those passages are echoed in one another, Tan. Perhaps this is why there has been no answer to your query. Although both passages mention the law, they are discussing completely different aspects of the law. At least, I don't see any connection. Of course, the fault for that might very well be in me! How do you see them linked? |

10956 | is jesus god | John 1:1 | DocTrinsograce | 125680
I assume that you meant God (capital G). Yes, He is. The word Trinity was coined by later Christians to describe the Triune nature of God. (Three Whos and one What.) There are other passages that state this clearly, including the OT (see Isaiah 9:6. Since the scriptures are God's revelation of His nature, I think of this as an important study. In theology the study of the nature of God is called "theology proper." Therefore, as a regular practice, I color the references to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit with green, yellow, and pink respectively. This includes the various pronouns. As I have done this over the years, it is really amazing how the Triune Nature of God makes itself clear throughout scripture... sometimes by making it difficult to decide which color to use! :-) |

10957 | Logos Word Logic | John 1:1 | DocTrinsograce | 125677
Many people have heard the Greek word "logos" and know that this is the word that is translated as "Word" in most of our Bibles. However, this word could just as aptly be translated "Logic." The tight connection between the spoken word and logic is not accidental. Rhetoric and formal logic have a place in understanding God. God is fundamentally a logical God. Logic describes an aspect about how God thinks. Note that I don't say that he thinks the way humans do. No, humans are made in His image and, as such, think and articulate their thoughts. As in all of the attributes of God, we hardly scratch the surface. God's thoughts are not our thoughts, nor His ways our ways. Nevertheless, don't let folks tell you as you think through the scripture that you ought not use logic. Sometimes human logic fails us, but it is a tool given us by God for our use. Be careful that the person arguing the abandonment of logic is not doing so in order to protect an otherwise untenable opinion. Of course, logic is only as good as our presuppositions... but that's another discussion. Christ is the Word, we are told by the apostle. The more I come to know Christ, the more I come to know the scriptures, the more I begin to see that this is not strictly a metaphor. Thank you Lord for the transforming and redeeming power of the Word! |

10958 | Should a Christian be a Democrat? | Bible general Archive 2 | DocTrinsograce | 125666
It is interesting that the Republican party came into being in the 1850s by a group of people coming out of the Whig party. At that time the Democratic party was pro-slavery. The Whigs kept avoiding taking up a position on this issue for fear of diseffecting some potential supporters. The Republican party was specifically formed as a reaction to this equivocation by the Whigs. Republicans wanted to change the laws of the land to insure the abolition of slavery. They wanted to form a loud voice that could speak for the slaves who could not speak for themselves. Where are the Whigs today? Today we are in a similar struggle. The Democrats are pro-abortion. The Republican party has been fairly consistently anti-abortion. However, some, fearing that some potential supporters will be dissefected, have said that the Republican party should open its arms to people on both sides of the issue. Don't they know their history? We must continue to speak for those who cannot speak. We must fight for the rights of the unempowered. If we cannot do it as Republicans, we will form a new party. Meanwhile, let us pray for that small minority whose right to life is being denied daily. |

10959 | Superior Hope | Heb 11:40 | DocTrinsograce | 125663
The book of Hebrews is all about the superiority of Christ. Hebrews 11 is known as a "Hall of Fame." Each of these people of great faith received salvation in the same way that we do today (see Romans 4). Yet we can look back at the historical fulfillment of our hope, Jesus Christ. Thus, we have greater reason to persevere!
10960 | A Set Up | Heb 10:24 | DocTrinsograce | 125661
How often have we provoked someone to anger? How often have we weedled away at someone until they gave into temptation? Imagine if we were that persistent in creatively devising ways to actually provoke our brothers and sisters to acts of love, goodness, and obedience?
