101 | how to serve (quantity-wise) at church | Rom 12:7 | azurelaw | 216953
Should Christians be serving or engaged in one/single ministry/service at church regardless of your gifts, willingness or problem of lacking manpower at church? The reason I ask the question is that my Chinese Bible contains the word "concentrate/single-minded/solely" in the verse; thus attributing both quantity- and quality-wise. Hope I have clearly expressed my question :-) Shalom Azure |

102 | weep with others is more important? | Rom 12:15 | azurelaw | 216219
Today, I've just heard someone say that it is MORE IMPORTANT to weep with those who weep THAN to rejoice with those who rejoice. Usually I think it is generally true. However, when I rethink about the verse, there is no such comparison in it. So, I started to ponder if the above statement is biblical or not. Your input is much appreciated. Shalom Azure |

103 | Matthew 13, v 31-32, Mustard Seed | Rom 14:17 | azurelaw | 174242
Can anyone explain in details what the parable of mustard seed mean in Matthew Ch 13 verse 31 to 32? I have read a book stating that the kingdom of heaven could be viewed as the church today and as it grows adnormally big (it is no longer a mustard plant)and becomes a tree, birds in the air (i.e. Satan's agent) come and nest in it. I don't know if this is according to the bible. I have searched the topic on this forum but most of the discussions concern the latter part of Matt which talked about faith to move mountain in relation with mustard seed. Only one or two brief discussions bear the similar content relate to my question.
104 | Careful use of one's freedom | Rom 15:1 | azurelaw | 182575
1 Cor 8 For verse 13, was it the end of Paul's teaching concerning our careful use of freedom for the sake of not stumbling a weak brother (sister)? I think there are cases in modern days (even in church) that the weaknesses are caused by irrationality, non-sensibility or ignorance. Are there any parallel discussion (with reference to Ch 8) in Paul's letter mentioning that we are also responsible for helping the weak brother/sister to grow? (In verse 13, Paul said : ... I will NEVER eat ... - NIV). So, if a certain weakness sounds really unreasonable but risks the possibility of causing a brother/sister to stumble, do we have to really give up the specific freedom of action FOREVER? |

105 | Greeting kiss motive | Rom 16:16 | azurelaw | 200082
other verses: 1 Cor 16:20, 2 Cor 13:12, 1 Thes 5:26 Greeting with a kiss was their culture in that time. I find it interesting that my Chinese Bible translating the verses appear to be a focus on the motive of the behaviour whereas English version only uses the term "holy kiss". Here is the Chinese version I translate it back to English to demonstrate the difference in focus: Greeting one another with a kiss, you must be pure and sacred in your motive or mind. My question: 1/ Does the Chinese version transmit the core idea of the apostles when they said so to the church members? 2/ Could we further expand the teaching that even such a seemingly loving and caring behaviour, we should do with great caution? Thanks for your input and Shalom Azure |

106 | Should pastors/preachers be evaluated | 1 Cor 4:4 | azurelaw | 242331
Do you have something like performance evaluation for preachers/pastors at church in the U.S? Base on the teaching of Paul in 1 Cor 4:1-5, is it unbiblical to exercise any evaluation on church ministers? Base on the context, I don't think Paul was talking about the evaluation as of today. But how far should we understanding his teaching? Thanks for your help and input. Shalom Azure |

107 | handing one over to Satan | 1 Cor 5:5 | azurelaw | 189666
1 Tim 1:20 What does Paul mean by "....handed over to Satan, so that they will be taught not to blaspheme."? The idea seems quite repugnant or contradicting. Similar idea was also found in 1 Cor 5:5 but with different context and targets. Does this refer to Church's disciplinary action on sinning and non-repenting church members? In 2 Tim 2:17 and 4:14, both Hymenaeus and Alexander did not seem to repent finally. Does it mean that such kind of reprimand might not always work? But at least we are able to keep the church pure and clean? Hope that my questions do not appear confusing. Thanks for your help. Shalom Azure |

108 | What does 'this' refer to | 1 Cor 7:6 | azurelaw | 230343
What does the 'this' here refer to? Does it refer to V7 about Paul's preference of celibacy or refer to the previous verses? If I understand it corrrectly, it should be in relation to V7. Thank you for your help. Shalom Azure |

109 | 1 Corinthians 7:17 to 28 | 1 Cor 7:19 | azurelaw | 177596
Good day to you, brothers and sisters: If my below questions are repeated in past posts, kindly direct me to them. Scripture from my NIV bible 1 Corinthians 7:17 to 24 Paul said: ...each one should retain the place in life that the Lord assigned to him and to which God has called him... Q: What did Paul mean? In what aspect(s) did this apply? How should I interpret it in modern days? 1 Cor 7:25 to 28 Q: What kind of present crisis did Paul mean in verse 26? (problem of adultery in Corinthian church? female outnumbered male?) Q: In verse 28, why did Paul specifically mention that marrying or a virgin marrying was not sinning? Was it not understood that it was not sin? Thanks for any help. God bless. Azure |

110 | Local Church ministry | 1 Cor 9:22 | azurelaw | 215211
I understand this verse is not properly applied to the situation I am going to address. However, the spirit of evangelizing does fit. For outreaching the youth in the neighbourhood of my church, a few leaders suggested our preacher to pay several field visits during lunch time to the shops or restaurants where students usually gather to find the possible means of contact. Now there is a brewing idea of opening a tuck shop for the ministry (though this is only at the idea-building stage). I, personally, have great reservation on the idea. Here are my concerns: 1/ Resource (both in terms of money and manpower) properly used as we have very tight resource and the rental price is high. 2/ Goal could be twisted from outreaching ministry to maintaining a balance account. 3/ Is it the purpose of local church and a biblical way to reach the lost? I need views grounded with scriptural support. Your help is very much appreciated. Shalom Azure |

112 | saved and sanctified | Ephesians | azurelaw | 189271
By the blood of Jesus, believers are called righteous and saved. As believers, in our process of sanctification in our life time, is it a must that we undergo all sorts of trials, tests, and sufferings, etc.(the refining process of fine gold)? Is sanctification referred to what Paul said in 1 Cor 10:24 as the reward? How should I understand the relationship between being saved and sanctified? With this I mean, some believers believed and were baptized just before the moment of their death, there was no way for them to undergo the process of sanctification as such described in Zech 13:9. Hope I have expressed my question clear. Thanks for your help. Shalom Azure |

113 | "the two" and "one new man" refer to ? | Eph 2:15 | azurelaw | 216188
Sorry that I marked it a note instead of a question. Does "the two" here refer to "both groups (the Jews and gentiles)" in v14? If so, what does "into one NEW MAN" mean? Does it refer to the true church (the body of Christ)? Thanks for your help. Shalom Azure |

114 | Ephesian 3:10 | Eph 3:10 | azurelaw | 185016

115 | a whatsapp message | Eph 4:14 | azurelaw | 238023
In about 2 months' time, I have received the below whatsapp message (1st in Chinese, 2nd is this version) twice to my mobile by members of our church. It seems to me that it is pretty much widely spread among Christian circles. However, I refused to forward the message to anyone. I am posting it here is not that I agree with it, but to hope that we may have some discussion (with scriptural support) on it concerning if it (what part "yes", what part "no") is biblical. As I think we should be careful in reading this kind of message before sending it to anybody. If you think it not worth/suitable for discussion on the forum, please feel free to delete it. Thank you and Shalom Azure *************** Please read this to the end. My name is God. You hardly have time for me. I love you and always bless u. I am always with you. 118 | Request for lyrics | Philippians | azurelaw | 186812
A week ago, I watched a film in HK called "The pursuit of happiness". There was a scene that the main character attended a service at church where a choir was singing something like : Lord, a mountain is in front of me. Please O Lord, don't remove the mountain, don't remove the mountain. But to give me strength to cross it. I like the lyrics. It is encouraging, for most of the time our fist reaction in face of difficulties will be running away. Can anyone provide the full lyrics of the song or the source for me to access it (if it violates the copyright regulation)? In order not to violate the terms of use of Lockman, I have the below quote of scripture: Matt 17:20 And He *said to them, "Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. Thanks for your help. Shalom Azure |

119 | Choir prophesying | Col 3:16 | azurelaw | 179228
Are these part of the system applying in today's Sunday worship at church that: verse 2: for the section of teaching and bible reading? verse 3: for the choir? Both have the function of prophesying, are they serving different aspects as to the kind of prophet we know in OT? If choir prophesy, it is a very interesting attribute to let the choir member know of it. It is because I always want to spare some time with them to share the spiritual message of the hymn during our rehearsal. It would be very convincing for me to talk to them on such arrangement. Thanks for your biblical guidance. Azure |

120 | A divorced choir conductor cannot serve? | 1 Tim 3:2 | azurelaw | 192272
I know the topic of divorce has been discussed a lot in the past. However, my quick search on the subject seems could not find me something relevant to the situation. Does this overseer also apply to choir conductor? Are we to terminate the choir conductor's ministry due to his/her recent divorce despite his/her most willingness to serve? Shalom Azure P.S. Sorry that I clicked the "note" button by mistake while this is in fact a question I wanted to ask. |
