1 | in prison how did paul received new? | Bible general Archive 4 | F.o.o.t.man | 203483
I used to wonder this as well. Paul was not in a conventional type of prison. I would say that his confinement was probably comparable to house arrest. His friends were able to tend to his needs and he was able to send and received mail. Acts 28:16 and 28:29-31 seem to illustrate this point. Those passages follow Paul's first imprisonment in Rome, during which he wrote Philemon, Colossians, Ephesians, and Philippians. He was eventually released and continued his ministry for another four years or so before being rearrested, imprisoned, and executed.
2 | Are funerals a worship service? | Bible general Archive 4 | F.o.o.t.man | 203484
I suppose that it depends on your definition of worship. To me, worship is not necessarily something I do only in church. Worship is my lifestyle, a mindset that affects how I view the world and how I respond to it. Worship could be singing songs of praise, sitting quietly in thoughtful meditation, or simply honoring my parents. Worship should be about bringing glory to God. I would hope that Christians would use their own funerals as an opportunity to bring glory to God. Could and non-Christian funeral bring glory to God? Definitely, although it may be less obvious. |

3 | sin | Bible general Archive 4 | F.o.o.t.man | 203486
Well, if I were to admit that there was sin and the penalty for that sin was death, I would be forced to action. It would be as if my house were on fire. I wouldn't want to call for help because that would be admitting that I was weak and couldn't help myself. Even trying to put out the fire would be admitting that I had a problem. The obvious solution to this problem is to turn my back on my burning house and lose myself in my everyday life. I think that this is the situation that you'll find among most people.
4 | Why do people say this when in all actua | Bible general Archive 4 | F.o.o.t.man | 203487
Gospel means "good news". What good news would there be had Jesus not died and risen from the dead. If all there was to preach was that God had come down in human form, would there really be anything to put our faith in?
5 | Please give me your take... | Bible general Archive 4 | F.o.o.t.man | 203488
pberardi I would like to apologize for anyone who jumps down your throat for your views about pastors remaining single. I believe that a pastor who has no wife would probably be able to dedicate much more of his time to the Lord than his married colleague. That being said, I am eager for your take on 1 Tim. 3 that states that a elder should be the husband of but one wife. Does this mean that he MUST marry or that IF he marries, he can only marry one woman. I've never discussed this with anyone before and would greatly appreciate your opinion. |

6 | A prophet | Bible general Archive 4 | F.o.o.t.man | 203548
I'm no expert on Jewish history or even the Old Testament prophets, but I'll try to draw you a picture anyway. During the time of Jeremiah, Israel saw an invasion by King Nebuchadnezzar, with much of Israel taken back to Babylon. Jeremiah was kidnapped and taken to Egypt where he continued to prophesy. His message, however, was not one of encouragement, but, rather, one of judgement. If you were in the position of the average Jewish person, how would you respond to someone preaching God's judgement. I, for one, would be terribly aggravated. If I had lost my country and my people, the last thing I would want to listen to would be some guy telling me how mad God was with me. As a result, I would have to say that godly prophets in Jeremiah's time were probably despised.
7 | Biblical Prophecy Question | Bible general Archive 4 | F.o.o.t.man | 203549
What if person X had actually written the book as the activity happened? One hundred years later, no one would know the difference. It may seem more believable, but it is hardly the most accurate. I would point out the birth and life of Jesus. There are literally hundreds of Old Testament prophesies concerning Christ's birth, life, ministry, death, and resurrection. The odds of all of the prophesies coming to pass in the same individual is astronomically small. There is no possible way that anyone could have influenced this. Furthermore, look at how many people missed it! The men who were the most well-versed in the Old Testament, the Pharisees, ended up crucifying the very man that the people of Israel had been looking for for hundreds of years. Even after Jesus' death and resurrection, some still looked for another Messiah. |

Azure Was the handout that you received suggesting that Isaiah himself was at fault in his preaching or that the people had misinterpreted or overexpanded upon his message? I only wish to clarify. |

9 | Is poor the only way? | Matt 25:45 | F.o.o.t.man | 203485
The apostle Paul never clearly stated whether he was rich or poor. In fact, he did work on the side so that he would not be a financial burden to his ministry. Yet, he collected money to be used to help other churches. Does that mean that those particular church were poor? Ok, I'll admit that I can't answer that. Personally, I would argue that there are countless ways to "give to Jesus."
10 | Is poor the only way? | Matt 25:45 | F.o.o.t.man | 203547
Maybe. I am reminded, however, of the last supper and a clue that may shed light on this. "After the morsel, Satan then entered him (Judas). Therefore Jesus said to him, 'What you do, do quickly.' Now no one of those reclining at the table knew for what purpose He had said this to him. For some were supposing, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, 'Buy the things we have need of for the feast'; or else, that he should give something to the poor. (John 13:27-29 NASB)" This seems to say to me that Jesus kept money with him to a greater or lesser extent.
11 | The 7 Churches of ASIA | Rev 1:4 | F.o.o.t.man | 204832
First of all, are you talking about the physical church buildings or the body of Christ located in those particular cities. Are there still believers in those cities? Probably. Second, Revelation is just a letter. It is a letter to the seven churches in a particular area of Asia Minor. John didn't write it to be "in the Bible." He wrote it because God told him to write it and who to send it to (Rev. 1:11). This is just like any of Paul's letters to various churches that he was familiar with. Why was it written? Probably because God loved these churches (but not any more than any other churches) and was concerned about how they were doing things. Only to one of the churches did God have no words of rebuke. I'm not sure what you want to know about what part they play today. I do know that they serve as an example, however. Each of the churches exhibit characteristics of most churches today, good or bad. The messages to each church show what God's response is to each kind of behavior. Hope this helps.
