1 | Are tongues a world language or not? | Not Specified | Bob Y. | 24521
I see here another question about tongues. I would also like to ask one because this is an area that is very fuzzy for me. I did the search on "tongues" but could not get satified with the results. All the scripture that I find in the New Testament seem to refer to tongues as a structured foreign language which is understandable to people of a particular country, not an unintelligeble babble. I know 1Cor.14:2 says they speak to God, but if I was in a crowd of english speaking Christians and began speaking in chinese without anyone that understood chinese the assumption would have to be that I was speaking only to God because He is the only one who could understand me. The Greek word used for "tongues" is Strongs:Number 1100 glossa (gloce-sah) 1) the tongue, a member of the body, an organ of speech 2) a tongue 1a) the language or dialect used by a particular people distinct from that of other nations 1Cr 14:10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices IN THE WORLD, and none of them (is) without signification. (I put caps to accent) 1Cr 14:11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh (shall be) a barbarian unto me. The Greek word for "voice" used is: 5456 phone (fo-nay) 1) a sound, a tone 1a) of inanimate things, as musical instruments 2) a voice 2a) of the sound of uttered words 3) speech 3a) of a language, tongue (again from Strongs) The NASB also interprets the above passage as "languages of the world" My question is where can it be interpreted from scripture that "tongues" is some kind of unintellegable babble that only God understands and not intended to refer to the structured languages of this world discribed in Acts 2:4-11? (Let me say here that I don't put down this practice and love Christians who do it if they are comfortable with it and feel it helps them. I just don't understand it.) Growing in Jesus, Bob |

2 | Isn't my Mother in Heaven? | Bible general Archive 1 | Bob Y. | 24251
Luke 23:43 And He said to him, "Truly I say to you, TODAY you shall be with Me in Paradise." Mattie, I capitalized "today" to stress that Jesus ment "this very day" not some time in the future or at His second coming. Unfortunately if your aunt is a Jehovah Witness, then what she is predicting is probably true for herself and when God comes for her, it will be for judgement. (Rom 5:1) When you are in Christ, you are at piece with God. Remain in Christ. May God richly bless you, Bob |

3 | Isn't my Mother in Heaven? | Bible general Archive 1 | Bob Y. | 24526
I want to encourage you Mattie P. you are on the right track. Continue to pray for your Aunt. It will be much more effective than arguing with her. It would seem to me to be a much easier task to turn someone to Jesus who is still searching than someone who has already rejected Him. Through God, nothing is impossible. With Jesus love, Bob |

4 | Can one loose their salvation ? | Bible general Archive 1 | Bob Y. | 24651
1Cr 3:14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 1Cr 3:15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. A person can loose the added rewards promised by Godly living. He can waste his life on trivial pursuit, he can grieve the Holy Spirit by giving in to sin and burdening his own life (and that of the people he loves)with sorrow, but once that person has repented and trusted Jesus as his savior, attached his life to the salvation that was given by the sacrifice of Jesus' life on the cross and in turn received the Holy Spirit, there is no loosing of ones salvation. No one is sin-proof because they are saved. The Holy Spirit will convict us of each specific sin, but it is Satan's desire to make us feel that the free gift of salvation, given to us through Jesus Christ by God's grace, can be taken away by our works. Rom 3:27 Where [is] boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. Rom 3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. Rom 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, Rom 5:2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God. (HOPE- Strongs 1680-Grk.- elpis (el-pece) from a primary elpo (to anticipate, usually with pleasure) I inserted this to stress that it is not the hope like "I hope it will rain." When Jesus is your savior you are at piece with God. Now since our life is eternal, we must think eternal, loving Jesus by obeying Him more than we love the temporal sins this world has to offer which will be burned up in the end. Jhn 14:21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him." Rev 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and [from] the things which are written in this book.(KJV) Rev. 22:19 And if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. (NKJV Copyright 1982 Thomas Nelson) Rev. 22:19 And if any one takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book. (RSV copyright info) Rev. 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and [from] the things which are written in this book. (Webster's) Rev. 22:19 And if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book. (NASB copyright 1995 Lockman Foundation) Which version says "Lamb's book of life"? There is a difference between the "book of life" and the "Lamb's book of life". We need to be careful not to add words to the Bible. The "book of life" is a registry of the deeds all humans have done in their life here on earth, both open and in secrete. The "Lamb's book of life" is a registry of all who have trusted in Jesus as their savior attaining eternal life and exemption from the judgement and wrath of God. Rev. 20:12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. 7 | "am I wrong in thinking that you pray to | Bible general Archive 1 | Bob Y. | 26347
Emmaus, The "communion of saints", as I understand it, is from the creeds and refers to the assembly of believers. No where in the Bible does it say that the living are to "commune" with those who have passed on. In your scripture you seem to be making up rules for communing with those who have physically died. You write of the apostle Paul: "Although he was alive on the earth at the time he wrote, the same principle applies after death if God is the God of the living" What you have wrote here is an assumption, based on your own logic, that is not supported by scripture. The Bible discribes the death of saints as a sleep. It would be hard for me to pray with you when I'm asleep. Only God can awaken those who are "asleep in Jesus" so it would be usless to pray to them first. 1Th 4:13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope. 1Th 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. 1Th 4:15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 1Th 4:16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Below is the end of a prayer that was written by the Pope, posted on the forum by Nolan. Sustain us, O Virgin Mary, on our journey of faith and obtain for us the grace of eternal salvation. O clement, O loving, O sweet Mother of God and our Mother, Mary! From this prayer it doesn't sound like he is asking Mary to pray with him, he is asking Mary to intercede for him as an advocate to "obtain for us the grace of eternal salvation" To pray in this manner is counter to scripture. 1Jo 2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; God is eternal and being eternal it is impossible for Him to have a "mother". God put on humanity as Jesus and Mary is the mother of that humanity. She is not the "Mother of God". To say she is the mother of God would be calling God created and it is He who created Mary. I suggest you pray to the one who never sleeps and not to those who sleep in Jesus, so that your prayers will be heard. Jhn 16:26 "In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I will request of the Father on your behalf; Jhn 16:27 for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came forth from the Father. Rejoice in the Lord, Bob |

8 | "am I wrong in thinking that you pray to | Bible general Archive 1 | Bob Y. | 26372
Emmaus my friend, My faith does not take the liberty to accept as truth other than what is written in the Word of God. Jesus Christ is the Son of God. God born as humanity who was sacrificed on the cross to redeam humanity to God from the slavery of sin that results in death. Jesus was raised from the dead and exalted to the right hand of God. Because of faith in Jesus Christ alone a Christian has been saved and is not judged under the law or by Sabbaths (Col 2:16). God exist as the Father, the Son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit. I believe in the inerrancy of the Bible which is God's word. Because this is my faith, I cannot be compared to Adventists and Jehovah Witnesses. Never the less, if the Bible says we sleep in Jesus then I have to believe that, although it is not exactly "sleep" as we know it, it is a type of sleep from which God will raise us up. I don't see anything in scripture that indicates otherwise. I believe, like many, that the twenty-four elders with white robes and victor's crowns are representatives of the raptured church and they hold the prayers of the saints. Since the church has been raptured there is no saints on earth in preparation for the judgement to come of which the church is spared (and is a result, to a great degree, of the prayers of the saints.) 1Cr 6:2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? When I read something from early church history and it doesn't agree with what the Bible says, (or it adds to what it says)I am forced to believe that what they believed is wrong and what the Bible says is right. This is a decision I made early on and if it's wrong then I guess I'll answer to God for it. Moses and Elijah might very well have been asleep and awakened by God for the Transfiguration. Angels through out the Bible are messengers. The fact that the angels of children are always in the face of the Father just says that they will report any offence toward the children to God, not that we are to pray to angels as intercessors. Thank you, Emmaus, for your response and the love of our Lord be with you, Bob |

9 | Shroud OK? | Bible general Archive 1 | Bob Y. | 26878
I believe the Shroud is an interesting curiosity and nothing more. I have never heard anyone use it to support the Gospel. If I did I would have to believe that they were not, themselves, convinced of the resurrection of Jesus to have to use such a feeble means of persuasion. Like Nolan, I'm always interested to hear something about the Shroud. In Christ, Bob |

10 | Church attendance not required | Bible general Archive 1 | Bob Y. | 29164
Sandre, May I also encourage you. By your trust in Jesus you are a member of the true church or assembly of believers. The church institution is a wonderful tool that brings believers together for fellowship, mutual growth, group worship and evangilism. It is, by no means, a requirement for salvation. Salvation is a result of faith in Jesus Christ plus nothing. Rest assured that is not just in your mind, that is in God's word. Love and Peace in Jesus, Bob |

11 | How important is your Church? | Bible general Archive 1 | Bob Y. | 29171
You brought up some good points. From my experience I can enter into any group of saved believers and feel the love and family bond that comes with the common faith in Jesus Christ. Taking "membership vowes" in a particular church group is not even scriptural as far as I can see. |

Brother, all of God's word has direct bearing on my life and, on my part, I feel more than a sense of responsibility to it. It is the foundation of all that I believe. As I become enlightened more and more by God's word, I look to His power for strength to bridle my flesh in a way that will conform to what He has revealed in my spirit. Please let me know what in particular you are refering to in 1 Corinthians. Thank you, Bob |

13 | May I ask, why, Lord? | Bible general Archive 1 | Bob Y. | 29276
All through the Psalms we see people putting the question "Why?" to God and God never takes offence at it. On the contrary, He strengthens their faith. I think what is ment in Romans 9:19 is that we are to understand that God is Lord and soverign and not question that fact. Are we to say that it was unjust for God to make Pharaoh's heart hard so that God could display His power before him? Are we to question the fairness of God granting non-Jews rightiousness through faith when the Jewish people have strived for rightiousness through the law for centuries? In like manner it would be irreverant and disrespectful to question God's knowledge of fairness in choosing His Son as the only way to come to a right relationship with Him and acquire the blessing of everlasting life. "Who are we" to ask why not Budda or Mohammed's Allah or just universal salvation! With universal salvation Jesus sacrifice has saved everyone and they don't even have to trust in Him. Wouldn't that seem more fair? That would also be the pot telling the Potter His craft. In this age of thinking "more tolerance is more better" many people are rejecting the Bible as God's word and believing that their "feelings" and intellegence are higher minded than God and that they could teach God a thing or two on tolerance. By the mear question they are rejecting God as soverign Lord. In John 20:25 Thomas questioned the risen Jesus. Jesus did not take offence, but cleared the doubt from Thomas' mind. In John 20:28 Thomas answered Him "My Lord and My God!" We can always ask "Why Lord?" as long as the question is "Why LORD?" Our Lord will come, Bob |

14 | Call those things that are not | Bible general Archive 1 | Bob Y. | 29294
Mat 21:21 And Jesus answered and said to them, "Truly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, 'Be taken up and cast into the sea,' it will happen. Mat 21:22 "And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive." Hi, M.S., I don't know who Joyce Myers is but I have heard the above passage being misinterpreted very simular to what you wrote. There are some passages that certain "sects" which sometimes call themselves Christians like to quote out of context a lot. This seems to be one of them. Following is a little context for it: Mat 26:39 And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will." 1Jo 5:14 This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 1Jo 5:15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him. What we ask must be according to His will. We cannot know His will unless we have His Spirit and His word within our hearts. John 10:34 is another one they love to misinterpret out of context. (Ooooh they love that one!) ;) Love and peace in Jesus, Bob |

15 | How important is your Church? | Bible general Archive 1 | Bob Y. | 29470
Hi Brian, I don't have any problem with going to the same church group regularly. I just said that taking "membership vowes" is not scriptural. I also don't really see why someone who had the gift of prophesy would have to always go to the same group. I could learn from anyone who had a gift to understand God's word and teach it, even if they just came by once in a while. On another note, I believe you said something important when you said "stronger faith community". That is probably one of the big problems with the format that the Christian church has taken. We are split up into so many denomenations, each one looking for some unimportant periphrial difference in interpretation of scripture that God's people find it difficult to get together as a body. The original reformation movement was vital to getting the true message of the Gospel to the masses and to break away from Catholic dogma. Now people have easy access to great and accurate interpretations of the Bible (like the ones available on this website) and understand that salvation is through faith in Jesus Christ alone. I believe it is time to go back to the churches of the "community" spoken of in the book of Acts. I can't see the practical use of having million dollar church buildings owning hundreds of acres of land in every corner compeating for "vowed members". We are all members of the same body with Jesus as the head. To be split up in so many directions just seems like a terrible waste and irresponsible stewardship of the resources that God has given his people. To me it seems that the corporate church becomes too much of a reflection of the corporate business. Each church (inc.) looking at their dollar bottom line along with their material assets and not at the true profit of any Christian church which is in the spiritual growth of all people within it's reach as a community. Proof of this is when we see social statistics within the church the same or worse than what is in the world. New Christians see no difference between the church and the world and become discouraged, many throwing the baby (Jesus) out with the bath water. All they can see is a street corner church anxious to build additions on to their building, high pressuring and burdening it's members for added donations and not focusing on the message of the Gospel (they can't serve two masters). Older Christians become discouraged in the direction that the church is going and long for the time when it did focus on God's word. Eventually many of them can be seen leaving and searching for new churches. I don't see why true Christians can't toss aside the denominations, meet weekly (or more) to worship and pray in small home groups and maybe monthly in a large Christian community gathering at a large hall funded by God's people in that community. This would end the battle for "vowed members" and begin a common outreach and concern for the whole community, believers and unreached alike. Too many preachers graduate from seminary looking forward to seeing their name on the lighted sign out front and the pride of having their very own church. I guess they would have to humble themselves a little in order to preach next to other enlightened preachers and teachers who may have even greater biblical understanding. Well, Brian, you asked what I thought. You probably didn't want to read all that. Your brother in Christ, Bob |

16 | How important is your Church? | Bible general Archive 1 | Bob Y. | 29610
I agree that a united Christian church will probably not happen soon, but if the Lord waits a while to come, I believe it will eventually happen. I don't push this concept very hard but I find many Christians I run across thinking along these same lines. These days I believe people are dividing more along the lines of traditional and contemparary music rather than strained legal interpretations. I know because the Bible says that we have a responsibility to assemble with fellow believers on a regular basis. I'm not really sure that that responsibility is to the same group all the time. I can see where it may be beneficial to fellowship with other local Christians. It seems that it would be well within Scripture to meet very regular in a home with the same small group, sharing fellowship, Christian growth and accountability but rotating your large meeting with several surrounding local churches. Maybe even some churches that are predominantly another race from your own. Christians seem to like to divide up in races (again reflecting what the world does) and this is definately not Scriptural. We have a special kind of responsibility to anyone whose faith is in Jesus Christ. The responsibility we have toward unbelievers is to show love and try to be sensitive in how the Spirit will use us to witness or plant seeds. The love and responsibility we feel toward all other (believing) Christians is a whole different perspective that shouldn't be isolated to a group within one building. We have Jesus Christ as our common bond all else is unimportant. 1Cr 2:2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. Do I feel a duty as a Christian to be loyal to one denomination? Absolutely not! 1Cr 1:10 Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment. Rejoice in the Lord, Bob |

17 | Give the difference of evil and wickness | OT general | Bob Y. | 23827
Hi Jepson, I would agree with two above replys, that wickedness is the evil intent of the heart of an individual and would be a fruit of evil (along with sexual immorality, covetousness, maliciousness, etc. Rom.1:28) Inversely the fruits of the Spirit would be the fruits of rightiousness. It would seem to me that the act of 9/11 was purely evil and was carried out because of the wickedness in each perpatraitors heart. |

18 | If He came today would He turn away fro | OT general | Bob Y. | 23882
Rose, I know that their is a lot of disagreement about the weight that baptism has. The closest thing that can be compared to baptism in my understanding is the circumsision of the Old Testament. It is an outward sign of an inward covenant. Salvation is by faith in Jesus Christ plus nothing. Although I don't see any harm in it, I know of nothing in the Bible that supports infant baptism because a little child may not understand what a decision of faith in Jesus is, so he couldn't make an outward sign of his decision. Jesus did say that the children are protected. I think one thing that all of us have to be sure of is that God is much more just than we could ever imagine. His judgements will be perfect for the children, the rebelious, the innocent, the ignorant the wicked or what have you. Rom 8:1 says that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. There is no judgement for those whose faith is in Jesus. Jesus took our condemnation upon Himself. All those who do not place their faith in Jesus in this life will be judged by how they lived and the Bible says all have sinned. With the exception of those who do not have the ability to decide (children, mentally handicapped, etc.)anyone who does not receive Jesus will not be found innocent. God is love, but He is also a rightious judge who is forgiving only to a humble and repentant heart. |

19 | If He came today would He turn away fro | OT general | Bob Y. | 23926
Hi Indy, I appreciate you taking the time to clearify your view of infant baptism for me. Your letter has helped me to understand this better. I believe this is an area of much misunderstanding to many Christians. When I choose to trust Jesus as my savior I also choose to be baptised, publicly proclaiming my faith and new life in Him. When I told my mother she became a little upset because she said that I was already baptised as a baby. I think she felt that I was belittling what she and my father had done in good faith. I explained to her that what she did was more of a christening which publically committed her and Dad to raise me as a Christian, which they did (very much in line with your explaination)and that the baptism I chose was the result of a free will decision on my part to trust Jesus. Some may say that this is being baptised twice which is counter to Ephesians 4:5. I believe what this verse is talking about is the only one meaningful baptism which is a decision for Jesus. It is not putting down other kinds of baptisms which may help lead a person to that meaningful one. I support this with Acts 19:4-5. Unfortunatly we use the word "baptism" for all these acts which leads to some confusion. Thank you, again and God bless you. Bob |

20 | we obey from the heart not the letter. | NT general Archive 1 | Bob Y. | 18963
I would like to refer you to Colossians 2:15-16. Now that Jesus dwells within us by the Holy Spirit we are not bound by the rituals of the OT laws that were a mere shadow of His coming. Just like we may see a shadow of something coming at us that puts us on alert but when we see the object that is coming we focus our attention on it and forget about the shadow. We now fulfill the law by loving one another (Romans 13:8)and when we love God and love one another, we won't intentionally offend anyone. Since Jesus lives within us, every day should be a holy day for the believer. By the righteousness of Jesus, we are being made righteous (2Timothy 4:8). The law is to expose sin by those who are separated from God, (Romans 3:19), and not for the righteous, (1Timothy 1:9). When we choose to trust our eternal souls to Jesus, His law of loving one another,(John 15:12) is written in our hearts, (Jeremiah 31:33). How can someone have the Holy Spirit living within them, loving each other with God's love and proceed to commit adultry, murder, worship idols and covet? If they do these things it's because they are not truly saved (1John 2:4)and if that is the case all the sabbath days in the world can't save them from distruction, only the cross of Jesus will accomplish that. |
