1 | How many times is love in the bible. | Bible general Archive 2 | Barach | 150190
I'm sure someone will supply you with a number. Interestingly (and important for an understanding of the NT use of "love"), the Greek scripture had four words for love that are simply translated as "love" into English - but carry different meanings. E´ros (a word not found in the Christian Greek Scriptures), which is based on sexual attraction. Stor·ge´, a feeling based on blood relationship. Phi·li´a, warm friendship love based on mutual esteem. A·ga´pe—the love based on principle, which might be said to be synonymous with unselfishness, the love the apostle John referred to when he said: “God is love.”—1 John 4:8. Professor William Barclay in his New Testament Words says: “Agape has to do with the mind: it is not simply an emotion which rises unbidden in our hearts [as may be the case with phi·li´a]; it is a principle by which we deliberately live. Agape has supremely to do with the will. It is a conquest, a victory, and achievement. No one ever naturally loved his enemies. To love one’s enemies is a conquest of all our natural inclinations and emotions. This agape . . . is in fact the power to love the unlovable, to love people whom we do not like.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 contains a fine definition of "agape" [love]. |

2 | why the one when not the other | Gen 2:9 | Barach | 206365
If you read Gen 2:9, it would appear that these two trees were available to Adam and Eve. With plenty of food, there was no reason to eat of the 'tree of knowledge of good and bad'. But they did - after being tempted by the serpent (Satan) - because they desired something that didn't belong to them. After doing that, they weren't permitted to partake of the tree of life. The tree [all by] itself didn't provide eternal life, only God can do that (Rev 2:7). Hope this helps.
3 | What was the original sin? | Gen 3:1 | Barach | 175443
The original sin was stealing something that didn't belong to Adam and Eve... and what was that? The right to decide for themselves (without consulting God) what was good and what was evil. Only the Creator really possesses that type of knowledge and thus the reason for mankind's plight today. Before sin, Adam and Eve were perfect. After sin, they could only pass on imperfection to all of mankind and the result has been devastating... Rom 5:12 says: "Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned." This puts all of mankind on the same imperfect level and it's why Jesus sacrificial life was necessary. A perfect life (Jesus) to atone the once perfect life of Adam - perfect justice. Now, we all must excercise faith in that sacrifice, not with words only but more importantly with action - yes, the manner in which we live our lives. It will show whether we are still partaking of that fruit of knowledge of good and evil or whether we will allow God Almighty to decide for us what is good and what is evil through the pages of His word. |

4 | Genesis 4:17 | Gen 4:17 | Barach | 177442
Gen 5:4 is key... Adam and Eve gave birth to sons and daughters. Gen 3:20 confirms that the human family came from Adam and Eve ONLY. Interestingly and in support of this, Professor Ruth Benedict and Dr. Gene Weltfish observe in the publication The Races of Mankind: “The Bible story of Adam and Eve, father and mother of the whole human race, told centuries ago the same truth that science has shown today: that all the peoples of the earth are a single family and have a common origin.” So, Cain married a sister in harmony with God's directions to Adam and Eve Adam ‘to multiply and fill the earth’. (Gen. 1:28) |

5 | Why God destroyed Sodom and Gomorah? | Gen 13:13 | Barach | 176209
In short, God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for the wicked practice of sodomy. (Gen 19:4,5) Jude 7 has some insight into God's feelings about the depraved sexual practices: "just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, are exhibited as an example in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire." NASB |

6 | Who was crippled by an angel? | Gen 32:25 | Barach | 173699
As you can see from the context of the quoted scripture above, it was Jacob who was crippled by an angel. What could be the reason for crippling this God fearing man? It may have been to teach Jacob humility; a constant reminder not to be overly exalted because of his God-given prosperity or for having wrestled with an angel. The quality of humility is an object lesson found repeatedly in the Bible. |

7 | What does the name "Jehovah" mean? | Ex 3:15 | Barach | 214728
The actual meaning of this name is significant as He is the Creator and Every one of His promises comes true - to the point that nonone can block his hand... the meaning has the connotation of One who causes to occur whatever he says. You heard the expression, "It's as good as done"... well that's the meaning of his name, "He Causes to Happen". So, His name actually denotes "action".
8 | Weak Men of the Bible, Who Became Strong | Ex 4:10 | Barach | 179920
Interestly, Moses who became a powerful speaker for God Almightly initially felt weak in terms of being able to convey God's word.
9 | Did Moses studder or have a speach prob | Ex 6:12 | Barach | 182382
I believe this is the verse you are looking for. Yes, it was Moses and he felt unqualified because of being a studderer. |
||||||
10 | Did Moses studder or have a speach prob | Ex 6:12 | Barach | 182387
You're right Kalos, the verse doesn't say "exactly" that he was a studderer. The Bible indicates he had a speech problem. What's your point? |

11 | Did Moses studder or have a speach prob | Ex 6:12 | Barach | 182399
Hi John, I think we agree that he had a speech problem - the Bible does say that, just like I know I use d's sometimes in my spelling instead of t's - did you notice the spelling of "studderer" (it's a very old learning problem that surfaces from time-to-time). I defaulted to stutterer because the question itself alluded to this specific speech problem and I recalled that some commentaries suggest that this was the problem. (btw: I'm sincerely curious about what other speech problems it could be now that you brought it up). Stuttering is an interesting problem - under stress or fear, it gets worse. I knew someone personally who had this problem and when under stress or in a fearful situation (public speaking), he literally couldn't get some words out. I used to feel so bad for him. Tieing this back to Moses (a humble man to begin with), God was telling him to go speak to the powerful Pharoah. As you know, Pharoahs were viewed as gods on earth with the power to decide life or death if they didn't like what they heard. If Moses speech impediment was stuttering, he may have felt, 'I would never be able to articulate God's message due to my problem'. So, let me know what other speech problems you think it could be, now that we agree that the Bible is silent on this. (Of course, some may argue what's the difference anyway and they would be right, wouldn't they?) With Christian Love, Barach |

12 | What does the "knowledge of the Most Hig | Num 24:16 | Barach | 200224
Sometimes it helps to see what it is not: "1 Cor 3:18 Let no person deceive himself. If anyone among you supposes that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool [let him discard his worldly discernment and recognize himself as dull, stupid, and foolish, without true learning and scholarship], that he may become [really] wise. [Isa. 5:21.] 1 Cor 3:19 For this world's wisdom is foolishness (absurdity and stupidity) with God, for it is written, He lays hold of the wise in their [own] craftiness; [Job 5:13.]" Note how to acquire it: "Prov 2:1 My son, if you will receive my words And treasure my commandments within you, Prov 2:2 Make your ear attentive to wisdom, Incline your heart to understanding; Prov 2:3 For if you cry for discernment, Lift your voice for understanding; Prov 2:4 If you seek her as silver And search for her as for hidden treasures; Prov 2:5 Then you will discern the fear of the LORD And discover the knowledge of God. Prov 2:6 For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding." |

13 | Why did Ruth lay at Boaz' feet? | Ruth 3:9 | Barach | 167874

14 | Where was Samuel brought up from? | 1 Sam 28:7 | Barach | 184209
That's a good question. The context though indicates that what was happening was not approved by God. As you read through the context, divination is involved. Since divination was not approved by God, you can be sure that the Samuel mentioned in 1 Samuel 28:15 was indeed not Samuel. 1 Sam 28:5 When Saul saw the Philistine host, he was afraid; his heart trembled greatly. 1 Sam 28:6 When Saul inquired of the Lord, He refused to answer him, either by dreams or by Urim [a symbol worn by the priest when seeking the will of God for Israel] or by the prophets. [Prov. 1:24-30.] 1 Sam 28:7 Then Saul said to his servants, Find me a woman who is a medium [between the living and the dead], that I may go and inquire of her. His servants said, Behold, there is a woman who is a medium at Endor. 1 Sam 28:8 So Saul disguised himself, put on other raiment, and he and two men with him went and came to the woman at night. He said to her, Perceive for me by the familiar spirit and bring up for me the dead person whom I shall name to you. 1 Sam 28:9 The woman said, See here, you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off those who are mediums and wizards out of the land. Why then do you lay a trap for my life to cause my death? 1 Sam 28:10 And Saul swore to her by the Lord, saying, As the Lord lives, there shall no punishment come to you for this. 1 Sam 28:11 The woman said, Whom shall I bring up for you? He said, Bring up Samuel for me. 1 Sam 28:12 And when the woman saw Samuel, she screamed and she said to Saul, Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul! 1 Sam 28:13 The king said to her, Be not afraid; what do you see? The woman said to Saul, I see a god [terrifying superhuman being] coming up out of the earth! 1 Sam 28:14 He said to her, In what form is he? And she said, An old man comes up, covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground and made obeisance. 1 Sam 28:15 And Samuel said to Saul, Why have you disturbed me to bring me up? Saul answered, I am bitterly distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me and answers me no more, either by prophets or by dreams. Therefore I have called you, that you may make known to me what I should do. |

15 | Is "patient" Job actually not so patient | Job 1:22 | Barach | 158423
Although Job was unclear about who was behind his suffering and the important issues raised by God's chief adversary - Satan - the quoted scripture above (Job 1:22) appears to not support some "satyrical word play on the word bless".
16 | the book of Job | Job 42:7 | Barach | 182384
1. Not sure what you mean by 'where was the spirit from', what spirit? Perhaps you're talking about Satan? 2. People back then were very familiar with Bible history and God's use of natural elements (i.e. the flood) to punish unrepentant bad people. However, self-righteous people have twisted these examples and mis-applied them to try to explain away why someone may be suffering at the hands of God for some error/sin. 3. It's not strange at all that Job received no comfort from the so-called comforters. They were basically saying that you are getting all that you deserve from God because of some sin. Like you said, what type of friend would do that? And, that's what you can learn from the book of Job. btw: Sincerity is not a test of accuracy. If his so-called three friend were sincere they were obviously sincerely "wrong" about their self-righteous assessment of Job's awful situation, even as God indicated in Job 42:7. A nice lesson for us too - don't judge. |

17 | Comforting verse for non-believers | Psalm | Barach | 189132
For you Azure, this scripture (as it reminds us all of the unpredictablity of life): Eccl 9:11 I again saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift and the battle is not to the warriors, and neither is bread to the wise nor wealth to the discerning nor favor to men of ability; for time and chance overtake them all. I've found this scripture comforting: Rev 21:3,4 And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away." |
