1 | Hebrew and Greek Old Testament | Bible general Archive 4 | 10ECPreacher | 200957
Hello, JRM. The Septuagint has fascinated me for several years now, although I by no means claim to be an authority on the subject. It is my understanding that the Septuagint (LXX) was written in the common ("koine") Greek language -- as opposed to the classical Greek language. It was this common Greek language that the inspired writers of the New Testament used -- apparently by permission if not by mandate of the Holy Spirit. Thus, according to scholars, the syntax and vocabulary of the Greek NT are based largely upon that of the Greek OT -- the LXX. This explains why certain words have come to us as they have; for example, the OT Hebrew "Yeshua" (which is translated into "Joshua" in English) was translated in the the Greek OT as "IESOUS". This of course is the NT Greek word that is transliterated into the English name of our Savior -- JESUS. Also the OT Hebrew word "Messiah" was translated into the Greek word "CHRISTOS" -- which we know as the word CHRIST in English. From what I have read about the LXX, it apparently largely follows a different Hebrew text (found among the Dead Sea scrolls) instead of the Masoretic text of our Hebrew OT. Yet, the textual differences are slight (e.g., word order, spellings and/or punctuation), with no doctrinal/theological variances. Maybe this will help in answering your question. In Christ, tdc |

2 | What of the Law applies to me a believe? | Romans | 10ECPreacher | 200836
MJH, Here are some more verses that may help answer your question.... Romans 10:4 Amplified For Christ is the end of the Law [the limit at which it ceases to be, for the Law leads up to Him Who is the fulfillment of its types, and in Him the purpose which it was designed to accomplish is fulfilled. That is, the purpose of the Law is fulfilled in Him] as the means of righteousness (right relationship to God) for everyone who trusts in and adheres to and relies on Him. Galatians 3:24-26 Amplified 24 So that the Law served [to us Jews] as our trainer [our guardian, our guide to Christ, to lead us] until Christ [came], that we might be justified (declared righteous, put in right standing with God) by and through faith. 25 But now that the faith has come, we are no longer under a trainer (the guardian of our childhood). 26 For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God through faith. Hebrews 8:6-7 Amplified 6But as it now is, He [Christ] has acquired a [priestly] ministry which is as much superior and more excellent [than the old] as the covenant (the agreement) of which He is the Mediator (the Arbiter, Agent) is superior and more excellent, [because] it is enacted and rests upon more important (sublimer, higher, and nobler) promises. 7 For if that first covenant had been without defect, there would have been no room for another one or an attempt to institute another one. Hebrews 10:1 Amplified 1 FOR SINCE the Law has merely a rude outline (foreshadowing) of the good things to come--instead of fully expressing those things--it can never by offering the same sacrifices continually year after year make perfect those who approach [its altars]. Galatians 5:4 Amplified 4 If you seek to be justified and declared righteous and to be given a right standing with God through the Law, you are brought to nothing and so separated (severed) from Christ. You have fallen away from grace (from God's gracious favor and unmerited blessing). Hope this helps.... In Christ, tdc |

3 | spare the rod, spoil the child | Prov 13:24 | 10ECPreacher | 200729
Proverbs 13:24 (English Standard Version) "Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him." Apparently, this old adage was based on this scripture -- perhaps in conjunction with a few others.... Proverbs 29:15 (English Standard Version) "The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother." Hope this helps.... In Christ, tdc |

4 | First gentile convert | Matt 1:5 | 10ECPreacher | 200601
Hello, omimotoni. Apparently, Cornelius and his household were the first Gentiles to be born again in the New Testament church that came into existence on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2. The story of Cornelius is in Acts 10. Acts 10 44 While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. 45 And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared, 47 "Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?" 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. The Ethiopian of Acts 8:26-39 seems to have been a proselyte Jew, because he “had come to Jerusalem to worship” (v. 27). Hope this helps.... In Christ, tdc |

5 | what is the meaning of life | Rom 11:36 | 10ECPreacher | 200593
The Meaning of Life According to the scripture, Life is given to man by God to accomplish His purposes and to bring about His plans. Phil. 2:13 ESV “for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” Romans 1:36 ESV “For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.” Acts 17:28 ESV “In him we live and move and have our being” Job 12:10 ESV “In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.” Revelation 4:11 ESV “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.” Psalm 150:6 ESV “Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! Praise the LORD!” Ultimately, we exist as created beings in order to give glory and bring honor to our Creator. Life without and apart from Jesus Christ is as meaningless and futile as a car without a road and a road without a destination. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6 ESV), and “apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5 ESV). Also, Jesus said, “You must be born again” (John 3:7 ESV). To really “live”, natural life must be supplemented and augmented with spiritual life. Else, life has no meaning. Maybe this begins to answer the question…. In Christ, tdc |

6 | Reconciling Scripture verses. | OT general | 10ECPreacher | 200483
These two scriptures are actually referring to two distinct concepts. Deu 5:9 apparently refers to the generational consequences visited by God upon those who hate him. I think of it in terms of "sowing and reaping". What one generation "plants" in terms of ungodly lifestyles and immorality (i.e., "iniquity") will often be seen in the "harvest" of the next 2 or 3 generations. (In America, we are still reaping as a society what was sown in the 60's....) By contrast, Eze 18:17 assures us that God will judge each individual personally for the sins he has committed. In other words, a son will not be considered guilty of a sin just because his father committed that sin. One way to consider the seeming dichotomy of these two verses is in recognizing that even though we may be reaping societally problems that were spawned in the lawlessness of the previous generations (e.g., the 60's), we are not individually indicted for these social and moral ills that are afflicting our land; we are merely "afflicted" by them. Maybe this will help out.... In Christ, tdc |

7 | Bible verse about new leader | Bible general Archive 4 | 10ECPreacher | 200438
Daniel 11:36-41 Amplified 36And the king shall do according to his will; he shall exalt himself and magnify himself above every god and shall speak astonishing things against the God of gods and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished, for that which is determined [by God] shall be done. 37He shall not regard the gods of his fathers or Him [to Whom] women desire [to give birth--the Messiah] or any other god, for he shall magnify himself above all. 38But in their place he shall honor the god of fortresses; a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honor with gold and silver, with precious stones, and with pleasant and expensive things. 39And he shall deal with the strongest fortresses by the help of a foreign god. Those who acknowledge him he shall magnify with glory and honor, and he shall cause them to rule over many and shall divide the land for a price. 40And at the time of the end the king of the South shall push at and attack him, and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots and horsemen and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries and shall overflow and pass through. 41He shall enter into the Glorious Land [Palestine] and many shall be overthrown, but these shall be delivered out of his hand: Edom, Moab, and the main [core] of the people of Ammon. 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 (Amplified Bible) "Now also we beseech you, brethren, get to know those who labor among you [recognize them for what they are, acknowledge and appreciate and respect them all]--your leaders who are over you in the Lord and those who warn and kindly reprove and exhort you. And hold them in very high and most affectionate esteem in [intelligent and sympathetic] appreciation of their work. Be at peace among yourselves." This may be what you're looking for.... 9 | faith with works brings eternal life? | Eph 2:8 | 10ECPreacher | 200208
James 2:26 Faith without works is dead... John 3:16 ...whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life... Mark 16:16 He that believes and is baptized shall be saved... Romans 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believes... for therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith, as it is written the just shall live by faith... Hebrews 11:8 By faith Abraham ... obeyed. To believe (have faith) is to obey. Romans 10:16-17 ...all have not obeyed the gospel... who hath believed our report? So faith comes by hearing... the word... This is the gist of what I was trying to say. If this is too vague let me know and I will be more concise. Thanks! |

10 | Why claim your tithes on your taxes? | Rom 13:1 | 10ECPreacher | 36508
Greetings, lifechanger. I agree that the tithe belongs to God. In my opinion, the government should only assess taxes on 90 percent of our income, since the first 10 percent is God's. (Of course, not everyone believes the first 10 percent is God's. This is the way I understand it, though.) However, I don't think that idea will float in Washington D.C. :) That being said, I guess we should consider it a blessing that our government allows any kind of tax break at all for our tithes and other charitable contributions. By allowing charitable contributions to be listed with other itemized deductions on Schedule C, the taxpayer's total tax liability is reduced marginally. In other words, the government 'graciously' taxes us at a lower rate on money we give to God. I won't be surprised when this deduction is no longer allowed. (Then it will become apparent who is giving and tithing just to receive a tax break and who is doing it because they really love God. :) ) Kind regards, Tim D. Cormier Tennessee Preacher |

11 | Doesn't God hear us always? | Gen 1:1 | 10ECPreacher | 36484
Greetings, lifechanger. Here are some passages that may be what you're looking for. "For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions." [Matt. 6:14-15 NASB] "If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me;" [Psalm 66:18 Amplified] "He who turns away his ear from hearing the law [of God and man], even his prayer is an abomination, hateful and revolting [to God]." [Prov. 28:9 Amplified] "In the same way you married men should live considerately with [your wives], with an intelligent recognition [of the marriage relation], honoring the woman as [physically] the weaker, but [realizing that you] are joint heirs of the grace (God's unmerited favor) of life, in order that your prayers may not be hindered and cut off. [Otherwise you cannot pray effectively.]" [1 Peter 3:7 Amplified] Kind regards, Tim D. Cormier Tennessee Preacher |

12 | "to spare the rod is to spoil the child" | Prov 13:24 | 10ECPreacher | 36478
Greetings, genny. Proverbs 13:24 Amplified "He who spares his rod [of discipline] hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines diligently and punishes him early." "Spare the rod, spoil the child" is apparently a very old and common saying that to me appears to be a corruption of this verse. While it is true that undisciplined children will be "spoiled", the indictment of scripture is against the parent(s). Kind regards, Tim D. Cormier Tennessee Pastor |

13 | Where can I find: no weapon formed | Is 54:17 | 10ECPreacher | 36467

14 | those who live godly will be persecuted | 2 Tim 3:12 | 10ECPreacher | 36439
Greetings, zach†. Reading your question and the answers posted prior to this one brought the following passage to mind: "Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you." [Matt. 5:10-12 NASB] If we really understood what persecution was about, we would not avoid it, we would rather welcome it. "...that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead." [Phil. 3:10-11 NASB] I am convinced that many consider the personal sacrifice too great to really follow Jesus. To be truly identified with Him invariably brings separation and loss. 'So Jesus said to those Jews who had believed in Him, If you abide in My word [hold fast to My teachings and live in accordance with them], you are truly My disciples. And you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free.' [John 8:31-32 Amplified] "If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. ... So then, none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions." [Luke 14:26-33 NASB] Excellent, thought-provoking question. Kind regards, Tim D. Cormier Tennessee Preacher |

15 | What are the other books for? | Revelation | 10ECPreacher | 36329
Greetings, Frank. I have long believed that the "other books" were the 66 books of the Bible. Men cannot be judged by that which was not given to them to live by. Every deed and every idle word shall be brought into judgment. I believe the Bible teaches that only the "unrighteous" will be brought to stand before this great white throne of judgment. Here, as they stand before Jesus Christ and all the opened books of the Bible, I believe that they will clearly be shown to be without excuse. I'm sure there are many different opinions on this one. It will be interesting and edifying to see the answers to this question. Kind regards, Tim D. Cormier Tennessee Preacher |

17 | Being in the Spirit? | Mark 12:36 | 10ECPreacher | 35977
Greetings, Ray. The Amplified renders this verse like this: "David himself, [inspired] in the Holy Spirit, declared..." I believe David's words were "breathed by God"--the Holy Spirit itself spoke and David was just the instrument by which the words were conveyed to us. "For no prophecy ever originated because some man willed it [to do so--it never came by human impulse], but men spoke from God who were borne along (moved and impelled) by the Holy Spirit." [2 Peter 1:21 Amplified] "Every Scripture is God-breathed (given by His inspiration) and profitable for instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin, for correction of error and discipline in obedience, [and] for training in righteousness (in holy living, in conformity to God's will in thought, purpose, and action)..." [2 Tim. 3:16 Amplified] This is the underlying premise of Hebrews 4:12, in my opinion. "For whatever was thus written in former days was written for our instruction, that by [our steadfast and patient] endurance and the encouragement [drawn] from the Scriptures we might hold fast to and cherish hope." [Rom. 15:4 Amplified] Kind regards, Tim D. Cormier Tennessee Preacher |

18 | Why did God create time? | Bible general Archive 1 | 10ECPreacher | 35973
Greetings, mother_of_nine. I believe time is a boundary or barrier between temporal (temporary) things and eternal things. "While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal." [2 Cor. 4:18 NASB] Apparently, God created some things (such as this earth, for example) with a built-in rate of decay. Thus, everything created in this manner has a finite term of existence, and time is merely an expression of the aging (decaying)process. [This seems to indicate that God Himself came up with the idea of "planned obsolescence." :)] "Take notice! I tell you a mystery (a secret truth, an event decreed by the hidden purpose or counsel of God). We shall not all fall asleep [in death], but we shall all be changed (transformed) In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the [sound of the] last trumpet call. For a trumpet will sound, and the dead [in Christ] will be raised imperishable (free and immune from decay), and we shall be changed (transformed). For this perishable [part of us] must put on the imperishable [nature], and this mortal [part of us, this nature that is capable of dying] must put on immortality (freedom from death). And when this perishable puts on the imperishable and this that was capable of dying puts on freedom from death, then shall be fulfilled the Scripture that says, Death is swallowed up (utterly vanquished forever) in and unto victory. [Isa. 25:8.] O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? [Hos. 13:14.]" [1 Cor. 15:51-55 Amplified] Kind regards, Tim D. Cormier Tennessee Preacher and father_of_five :) |

19 | is jesus god? | Gen 1:1 | 10ECPreacher | 35966
Greetings, Y2J SwFl. Jesus Christ is the Son of God. (See 1 John 4:15.) "Son of" means the personification of, or the embodiment of. I like to think of the incarnation of God in the person of Jesus Christ as the perfect expression of infinite Deity in terms of finite humanity. "[Now] He is the exact likeness of the unseen God [the visible representation of the invisible]; ..." [Col. 1:15a Amplified] "He is the sole expression of the glory of God [the Light-being, the out-raying or radiance of the divine], and He is the perfect imprint and very image of [God's] nature, upholding and maintaining and guiding and propelling the universe by His mighty word of power. ..." [Heb. 1:3a Amplified] "For in Him the whole fullness of Deity (the Godhead) continues to dwell in bodily form [giving complete expression of the divine nature]." [Col. 2:9 Amplified] "It was God [personally present] in Christ, reconciling and restoring the world to favor with Himself, not counting up and holding against [men] their trespasses [but cancelling them], and committing to us the message of reconciliation (of the restoration to favor)." [2 Cor. 5:19 Amplified] "Who, although being essentially one with God and in the form of God [possessing the fullness of the attributes which make God God], did not think this equality with God was a thing to be eagerly grasped or retained, But stripped Himself [of all privileges and rightful dignity], so as to assume the guise of a servant (slave), in that He became like men and was born a human being. And after He had appeared in human form, He abased and humbled Himself [still further] and carried His obedience to the extreme of death, even the death of the cross!" [Phil. 2:6-8 Amplified] "By this you may know (perceive and recognize) the Spirit of God: every spirit which acknowledges and confesses [the fact] that Jesus Christ (the Messiah) [actually] has become man and has come in the flesh is of God [has God for its source]; And every spirit which does not acknowledge and confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh [but would annul, destroy, sever, disunite Him] is not of God [does not proceed from Him]. This [nonconfession] is the [spirit] of the antichrist, [of] which you heard that it was coming, and now it is already in the world." [1 John 4:2-3 Amplified] Kind regards, Tim D. 20 | IF YOU KNOW, WHY DID YOU ASK? HAHA | Jonah | 10ECPreacher | 35860
Dear suzyq, Typing messages all in uppercase is considered by many users of the internet to be impolite. Messages typed this way are hard to read and cause undue frustration to those who are forced to read them. By common usage, words typed all in uppercase are considered to be shouted. This is done for emphasis or to show excessive emotion or passion about what is being said. This is sometimes called "flaming" when the post is considered to be inflamatory. So, unless you really are mad at the world, please press the Caps Lock button until the little green light goes out. I have a feeling that most everyone on this forum will appreciate it. I trust that this is not offensive to you, because I really do enjoy reading your posts. I must admit to a little undue levity at times, because your uppercase posts make it appear that your volume control knob broke off with the setting on maximum. :) Kind regards, Tim D.
