1 | Can a man be with another man | Bible general Archive 2 | kw5kw | 122784
Leviticus 18:22 You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination. Leviticus 20:13 If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them. And Romans 1: 18 to end -- paying attenion to v27 God's Wrath on Unrighteousness 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. 24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. 28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God's decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them. |

2 | NIV bible | Bible general Archive 2 | kw5kw | 139857
To me it's much easier to read and understand than the KJV (AV). As an example here are two completely random verses, I just opened my KJV and this is what I saw: Luke X:8 (KJV) "And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you: Here is the corresponding NIV version: Luke X:8 (NIV) " When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is set before you. The NIV is just easier to read. It has been translated into "modern" English, and not the "Kings English" of the early 17th century. Phrases such as: "Verily, Verily I say unto you..." and puts them into the modern: "I tell you the truth..." Hope this helps Russ |

3 | Scriptural support? | Bible general Archive 2 | kw5kw | 140740
A symbol that shows your belief in God and Jesus, I feel, is ok. You are not worshiping the symbol. The symbol, wither it a cross or a fish, is just allowing others to assertain that you are indeed a Christian, and that you beleive strongly enough that you want others to know. After all, all Christian demoninations have been using the cross as a symbol for 2000 years now. Statues, however, should be advoided at all costs. Acts 17:16 - 34. I'm still unsure about pictures (of God or Jesus) in the home, ok to look at in museums I guess. Movies such as 'the 10 Commandments', ok to watch, not to worship the movie. Art (pictues and movies) can be a wonderful teaching tool if used correctly. My humble opinion, for what it's worth. Russ |

4 | Why God allows such tragedy | Bible general Archive 2 | kw5kw | 140844
God does not give us the answer to every question, although you can be shure he has a purpose in (reason for) everything that happens, either good or bad. Look at Job. Prosperous he was, he had all that he could want. He had large loving family, property, posessions. When Satin took it ALL away (with God's permission), did he curse God? No, he continued with praises. God was so pleased with Job, that he gave Job twice all that he had taken away. Job 42:10-17. So, I cannot answer why, no one can. But, you can be sure, there is ultimately a very devine reason. |

5 | Which book in the Bible do I commence | Bible general Archive 2 | kw5kw | 141388
It might not be the book of the Bible that you’re having trouble with as much as the language of the interpretation that you’re using. The King James Version used the language of the time of the translation, i.e. 1611. To me it is hard to understand at first. Although, it’s what I grew up with in church. It’s probably the reason I could never read the Bible. I’d read it on Sundays, and put it down through the rest of the week. I could never get past all the thee’s, thou’s, shaltnot’s and wherefore’s.” We were given a paraphrased Living Bible when we were married by my mother-in-law. I never could read it either. It just wasn’t the Bible to me. Then came the NIV. They put the Bible into today’s language and I could understand it. I picked it up and haven’t put it down since. Now, I have 2 different study Bibles in NIV. One different reference bible in NIV. A 'standard' Holy Bible in KJV, a reference Bible in KJV. A copy of the Net Bible with it's study notes. I also have the Living Letters translation that puts still a different light on the words as well. I use the web, currently, to access the other translations that I don't have in print form. So, you might try a different version of the Bible. Try on the web. NASB is here on this site. http://www.blueletterbible.org/ is another site that offers a more 'literal' version such as KJV or NASB. The English Standard Version can be found here: http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/browse/ . The Net Bible, an entirely different translation, can be found here: http://www.bible.org/default.asp . This site has a bunch of study materials just like the blueletterbible.org site. The Net Bible is very close to the NIV, but still a bit different. For beginning Bible readers, I would right now highly recommend the Daily Study Bible from Zondervan publishing. Either in the NIV (recommended for readability in today's English ( you can see it at: http://www.zondervanbibles.com/0310919797.htm )) or the KJV. Personally, I feel that you can't have too many translations. What one doesn't make clear, a slightly different viewpoint, or wording of a passage might bring the passage into the light and make it clear for you to understand. I hope this helps. Russ |

6 | who's the 1st female to commit adultry? | Bible general Archive 2 | kw5kw | 141930
The word 'wickedness' is usually considered to be linked with sexual perversion. So while the names of the people, in the rest of the wicked world, at the times of Noah's flood are unknown of, the world was destroyed because of how 'wicked' the people had become (Genesis chapter 6 verse 5) (Sodom was destroyed because of sexual wickedness (Genesis chapter 19). Verses 4 and 5 describe the wickedness. Verse 7 Lot says "No, my friends. Don't do this 'wicked' thing.") But, that doesn't tell us who the first female was to commit adultry. So we have to consider one of the following two. Hagar or Lot's daughters. Sari sent Hagar to lie with Abram (Genesis 16: 1-4) would be the first recorded instance that I know of. While Lot's daughters got Lot drunk and took advantage of the situation (Genesis 19:30-36) Now in those days of the OT it is recorded in many, many places where it was the custom for men to have many wives. That might just allow Hagar 'off the hook' as we in the modern world might say it. I can't answer that question, only God, who was there, could answer that question. (He's everywhere. Col 1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.) That would then let the hammer fall on the unnamed daughters of Lot. (At least in the verses I quoted they are not named. At some place where there is a bunch of genology, I sometimes have a hard time reading reading them, but instead I skip over it. Maybe Hank could clue me in if I'm wrong here.) |

7 | what is Sodom and Gomorrah? | Gen 19:24 | kw5kw | 156402
Simply put, the two cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were the epimidy of how low the human race had sunk... again. After God had destroyed the entire earth with the flood, and only Noah and his family had survived, it didn't take long for man to become wicked once again. We first see Sodom wickedness when Abram sets out to free Lot from Chedorlaomer, and the kings that were with him. Genesis Chapter 14. Abram freed his nephew, Lot, and defeated Chedorlaomer and his allies. At that time Melchizedek, the king of Salem (Jerusalem), came out to bless Abram. At this belessing, Abram gave Melchizedek 10 percent of his 'bounty'. The king of Sodom wanted the people that Abram had captured... for what matter we can only imagine. Abram told him no. Then in Genesis Chapter 18, we once again find Sodom and Gomorrah in the pages of the Bible. This time, we find out how wicked they'd become. Gen 18:20 And the LORD said, "Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous; Gen 18:21 I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know." Abram (now Abraham) pleeded with the Lord not to destroy the two sinful cities, not for 50 righteous, then 45, then 40, then 20, then 10, then 5. God told Abraham that He would not destroy them if he could find just five righteous people there. The rest of the story is in Genesis Chapter 19... He didn't, although he found Lot and led him and his two daughters to safety. His wife disobeyed the Lord's orders not to look back, and she was turned into a pillar of salt. That's the shortened story, hope that helped. Russ |

8 | So these were Noahs people??? | Gen 19:24 | kw5kw | 156414
Just as we are all decended from Adam... we are also all decended from Noah. For God destroyed every living thing with the flood. Gen 7:23 And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark. |

9 | Choosing warriors by how they drink | Judg 7:4 | kw5kw | 179192
What you are looking for is in the Book of Judges. It is where Gideon is to go to defeat the Midianites, but he has too many men: Jdg 7:2 The LORD said to Gideon, "You have too many people for Me to hand the Midianites over to you, or else Israel might brag: 'I did it myself.' Jdg 7:3 Now announce in the presence of the people: 'Whoever is fearful and trembling may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.'" So 22,000 of the people turned back, but 10,000 remained. Jdg 7:4 Then the LORD said to Gideon, "There are still too many people. Take them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. If I say to you, 'This one can go with you,' he can go. But if I say about anyone, 'This one cannot go with you,' he cannot go." Jdg 7:5 So he brought the people down to the water, and the LORD said to Gideon, "Separate everyone who laps water with his tongue like a dog. Do the same with everyone who kneels to drink." Jdg 7:6 The number of those who lapped with their hands to their mouths was 300 men, and all the rest of the people knelt to drink water. Jdg 7:7 The LORD said to Gideon, "I will deliver you with the 300 men who lapped and hand the Midianites over to you. But everyone else is to go home." Jdg 7:8 So Gideon sent all the Israelites to their tents, but kept the 300 who took the people's provisions and their trumpets. The camp of Midian was below him in the valley. |

10 | is masturbation a sin??? | Prov 1:1 | kw5kw | 155740
I'm going to re-post my original answer so you don't have to go searching for it: Yes masturbation is a sexual sin. Ephesians 5:3 ?But among you there must not be either sexual immorality, impurity of any kind, or greed, as these are not fitting for the saints.? (Net Bible) Ephesians 5:3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; (KJV) Ephesians 5:3 But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints; (NASB) Ephesians 5:3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God?s holy people. (NIV) This is the major verse that says masturbation is a sin! I have given you four examples from four different translations. I like the way they all say it, but the NIV really puts it into words that mortal man can understand the best because that version says ? ?holy people.? I think if we?re saved then we become Holy. (Lets save this for another thread, ok guys, don?t jump on me for not posting a scripture reference about this here, I?m concentrating on sexual impurity here, thanks anyway for thinking about it though.). For Jesus said in Matthew 5:26 ?You have heard that it was said, ?Do not commit adultery.? 27 ?But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.? (NIV) This says anything that gives you the hint of thinking of taking a woman (or man for that matter) to bed is a sin. What else is masturbation? You just don?t have that object of your sexual desire to consummate the act, so you improvise. You have sinned according to God?s law. I want to let you know that you are not alone in this. Most men have done this. I?ll admit that I have. I knew that it was a sin. I was pointed to a book by God. I picked this book up several times in the Christian bookstore that I now frequent. Finally, while watching Charles Stanley one Sunday morning he was doing the a series on the ?Landmines in the Path of the Believer? This one was the first one on pride. It caused me to go to his web site and do an expanded study of his word. The whole series was there and there is one on Landmines in the Path of the Believer: Part Four - Sexual Sins . I opened the link and started reading. There he reverences the same book that I?d picked up and put back down several times. ?Every Man?s Battle? by Stephen Arterburn. I read this page with zeal. I went out and purchased the book, and read it in two and a half days. For you see I had the same problem you stated you have. I have learned thru proper scripture listed in the book, how to avoid any temptations in the modern world. I wish I had that book with me, but I left it at home, and I?m at work writing this to you. 1 Corinthians 6:13 ?? The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.? This is very true. Learn how to not look at a woman for anything but a person, not as an object of sexual desire. Remember Matthew 5:26-27 once again. If you even look at a woman lustfully, then you are sinning. Don?t see a woman and take a ?free peek? down her blouse, it?s a sin. Don?t open a door for a woman so that you might watch her walk, that?s a sin. Open the door to be courteous, then look away. Look at the floor, look at the ceiling, don?t watch her ?wiggle?. If the Coors twins come on during the NFL game you?re watching, don?t look, change the channel for 60 seconds. Don?t watch shows like ?Desperate Housewife?s? that are full of sexual content, watch a religious station instead. Don?t pick up a Playboy, or any magazine similar to or worse than, for any reason. Avoid sexual web sites and binary newsgroups, as they will lead to eternal damnation. Romans 13:13 ?Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.? (NIV) Yes, by all means live a pure life, it can be done. I?ve learned to not look at a woman in a lustful nature. I don?t pick up the newspaper?s Sunday morning papers ads any more, you?ll understand after you read the book (?Every Man?s Battle?) about this. Lets look at Galatians 5:19: Here Paul states what the sins are, you notice what?s first ?The acts of the sinful nature are obvious, sexual immorality,?? and if you can 1 Thessalonians 5:22 ?Avoid every kind of evil.? Then you can start on your way to redemption. God will help you through this problem. You can stop, you will stop, as I will pray for you. As stated in Titus 2: 11? For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. 12 It teaches us to say ?No? to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.? Amen. I hope this will help you, Your brother in Christ, Russ |

11 | Wisdom vs. knowledge | Prov 1:7 | kw5kw | 141832
You acquire knowledge by learning, going to school, reading books, watching instructional viedo's, etc. We learned that we gain knowledge from Genises 2. We as the human race gained the ability to learn when Eve gave Adam the fruit from the tree of knowledge. You notice that in Gen 2:9 (And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.) that we didn't eat of the tree of wisdom. You can see that God gives us wisdom by these verses: 1Ki 3:28 And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God [was] in him, to do judgment. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1Ki 4:29 And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that [is] on the sea shore. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1Ki 4:30 And Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt. You acquire wisdom from God (Exd 36:2 And Moses called Bezaleel and Aholiab, and every wise hearted man, in whose heart the LORD had put wisdom, [even] every one whose heart stirred him up to come unto the work to do it: ) so that you will know how to use the knowledge. You attain knowledge by learning. You can learn from experience. You touch your hand on a hot stove as a child. You burn your hand. You have now learned knowledge that the stove will burn your hand. You have gained wisdom if you use that knowledge to not touch the stove again. Therefore man can gain knowledge. God gives the wisdom to use the knowledge for His purposes. Your brother in Christ, Russ |

12 | Wisdom vs. knowledge | Prov 1:7 | kw5kw | 147318
Two Facts: 1) You can have knowledge without wisdom. 2) You cannot have wisdom without knowledge. Pro 10:21 The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom. Pro 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. You must read the Bible (gain the knowledge) to know to ask God for His wisdom. (Jam 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.) Once you've gained God's wisdom, then you'll understand. Jam 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. Jam 3:13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him show out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. |

13 | What about other death punishments? | Prov 6:16 | kw5kw | 142292
I'm responding here, before I read any more post, and I know that there are a bunch of them. Any sin that you do that is of a sexual nature, be it homosexuality, child molestor, adultry, fornication outside of marriage, masturbation from thinking of someone besides your spouse (and I mean spouse being of the opposite sex!) because women masturbate as well as men. These are all sins of a sexual nature and are all treated as equal. 1 Cor 6:13 "... The body is not for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body." then in 1 Cor 7:2 "But because of immoralities, each man should have relations with his own wife and each woman with her own husband." You notice here it says man (husband) with woman (wife), woman (wife) with man (husband), not man with man or woman with woman. To me that's pretty clear. Then in Eph 5:3 "But among you there must not be either sexual immorality, impurity of any kind, or greed, as these are not fitting for the saints." The only subject that I'm aware of that gets nearly as much subject matter than sexual sins in the Bible is murder. If you read the Bible, then you find sexual sin everywhere. From Lot's daughters getting him drunk and sleeping with him in Genesis all the way to John's Revlation. No wonder so much emphisis is on sexual sin and how bad it is. It IS possible to change the way you think and act, even in the 21st century. It IS possible! You CAN live a sexual sin free life. I found out how! Just ask an ex-smoker about the sins of smoking. He'll tell you. Just ask an ex-sinner about the evils of sinning. He'll tell you. I'm both, I'll tell you. And, since I've been there, I know what I'm talking about. Your brother in Christ, Russ |

14 | Thou shalt not use thy Lords namein vain | Prov 30:9 | kw5kw | 185294
I "feel" that; "Yes, it is bad. Why? Because what are you doing when you say this? You are exclaiming something about God, to God or by God. That isn't what God had in mind when he said you need to worship him. You should be humble to the LORD, reverent in your aproach to Him. Happy, Yes, but never just blurting something out! It's a conditioned reflex, just as the cursewords are. Just train yourself to say something like: "Good Golly!" or "Wow!" and you'll be much happier. For scripture see Exodus xx:7; Deu v:11; Psa cxxxix:20 And as the BBE translates Proverbs xxx:9 " For fear that if I am full, I may be false to you and say, Who is the Lord? or if I am poor, I may become a thief, using the name of my God wrongly. " Because to do something in vain is to by defination is something that is: 1. Empty; worthless; having no substance, value or importance. When you say, "Oh! My God!" you are doing just that, saying something as an explamation that actually has no more importance than simply saying: "Wow!" |

16 | Is living with a married person adultry? | Matt 5:27 | kw5kw | 141935
Hello and welcome to the forum. I'm sad and unhappy for you my dear as my mother came from a broken home, and I came from a broken home as well. I have tried extra hard to commit to my wife, even though I falterd myself, my wife has 'stuck by me' like flies on flypaper. Thank God and Jesus. My wife and I have been married for 33 1/2 years now. For Jesus said in Matthew 5:26 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ 27 “But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (NIV) and unfortunatelly it's very true. Paul states in Galatians 5:19: what the sins are, you notice what’s first “The acts of the sinful nature are obvious, sexual immorality,…” Now in Matthew 19:9 Jesus says: "Now I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another commits adultery.” (Net Bible) (( other version have the word fornication in place of immorality here.)) (((I'm going to say that you could swap genders here and be ok. ))) In the Gospel of Mark Jesus says: 10:9 "...So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 10:9 Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” Now, we go back to Matthew; 5:31 “It was said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife must give her a legal document.’ 5:32 But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for immorality (fornication in other translations), makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. We must remember that God hates divorce (Malachi 2:16 “I hate divorce,” says the Lord God of Israel, ...) so He prefers you to stay together forever. (Deuteronomy 22:19 "... She will then become his wife and he may never divorce her as long as he lives. " In 1 Corinthans Chapter 7 Paul talkes about divorce in length concerning the belver and non-beleiver. 7:10 To the married I give this command—not I, but the Lord — a wife should not divorce a husband 7:11 (but if she does, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband), and a husband should not divorce his wife. 7:12 To the rest I say—I, not the Lord — if a brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is happy to live with him, he should not divorce her. 7:13 And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is happy to live with her, she should not divorce him. 7:14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified because of the wife, and the unbelieving wife because of her husband. Otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are holy. 7:15 But if the unbeliever wants a divorce, let it take place. In these circumstances the brother or sister is not bound. God has called you in peace. 7:16 For how do you know, wife, whether you will bring your husband to salvation? Or how do you know, husband, whether you will bring your wife to salvation? 7:17 Nevertheless, as the Lord has assigned to each one, as God has called each person, so must he live. I give this sort of direction in all the churches." I would do everything in your ability to make sure that you try to salvage the marriage such as professional counceling, going to church, getting right with God. I suggest that you do all these things. Good luck and keep in touch. Your brother in Christ. Russ |

18 | where does sin begin, heart or mind? | Matt 5:27 | kw5kw | 156991
The devil tempts you thru your ear, your internal ear, your mind. He is able to communicate to you via your thoughts, just as God does. He tells you to do something, that it won't hurt. He knows the how, when, where and how of what to tempt you with, and he uses all of that knowledge against you to get you to move away from worshiping God. I know that the closer you are to God, the more time the devil spends with you. He does this to draw you away from the glory of God. To get you to sin, to get you to feel guilty about the sin(s), to tell you that God hates a sinner, and therefore God hates you. For we are not unaware of the wiles of the devil, (2Co 2:11) you need to put on the full armor of God to protect yourself. (Eph 6:11-18) No, the sin's don't begin simply upon a thought of something. For those thoughts are put there by Satan. The sin occurs when you act upon those thoughts. In Mat 5:27-28, Jesus teaches you that you can sin by lusting about a woman in your thoughts. Well, yes you can, but the simple thought is placed by none other than Satan. It is how you continue with that thought that would be the sin. Simply seeing can produce the thought, but look away saves you from the sin. The sin that would be produced in your heart. Mat 12:35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. |
