2 | Are there degrees of punishment in Hell? | Bible general Archive 3 | Tim3:16 | 169995
One definition of hell, that for me is quite reasonable, means a place where there is utter and complete separation from God. There are no variations to this in my understanding. God Bless you and yours, Tim |

6 | 1 king 1-1 | Bible general Archive 3 | Tim3:16 | 170520
B50115, I will attempt to answer two more of your questions here, One, Where is God today? Well right now He is everywhere and in everything, and He exists outside of the constraints of time. For a good explanation on this go to www.marshill.org and click on the link for a very interesting message that will likely satisfy many of your curiosities. Two, There is nothing good on TV, at least not network TV. Even the news is driven by advertising dollars so they strive to deliver their own agenda. If you cannot trust the news anchor team to tell you the whole truth, who can you trust? The TV preachers? I try to stay away from most of them as well. Tim |

7 | how did we get our bible | Bible general Archive 3 | Tim3:16 | 179943
Hello Thorn, Your question is one with a history of hot debate and I hope does not prove to be a thorn in the side of any users of this forum. (o; I will attempt to answer as briefly as possible, though I will undoubtably leave out much useful information. For further clarification, all you need to do is ask. In classical Greek the world "canon" signifies properly, "a straight rod," or "a carpenter's rule." The sacred writings received the name of the "Canon of the Scriptures." When, therefore, we use the term we may mean one of two things, or, indeed, both: 1. The Canon of Truth--referring to the restriction of the number of books that compose the sacred volume. As such it was first used in the year A.D. 367. 2. The Rule of Faith and Life--referring to the application of the sacred Scriptures as a rule of our lives. In this sense it is used in Galatians 6:16; Philippians 3:16. The formation of the Old Testament canon was composed of the writings which spread over many centuries. The New Testament canon was gradually added to that of the Old Testament. But it was some considerable time after our Lord's ascension before any of the books contained in it were actually written. The Apocrypha contains fourteen books, namely, 1 and 2 Esdras, Tobit, Judith, the rest of Esther, Wisdom, Ecclesiasticus, Baruch, the Song of the Three Children, the Story of Susannah, Bel and the Dragon, the Prayer of Manasses, and 1 and 2 Maccabees. The Apocryphal Books derive their name from a Greek word, apokruphos, which means "hidden." They are so called because they are,--(1) hidden; (2) of unknown authority; (3) spurious. They were not recognized as inspired books by the Jews, who regarded them, however as having high authority, and held them in high esteem as being a valuable history of their nation. Although they were carefully distinguished from the canonical Scriptures, their use was not only allowed, but many of them are quoted in Talmudical writings. They were given a place by themselves in the sacred volume, but with the distinct statement that they were not to be regarded as of equal authority with the books of the canon, their position being between the Old and New Testaments. We find them in some Bibles to-day--especially in Roman Catholic Bibles, since they are regarded by the roman church as inspired books. Following are from a book: "Seven Principles For Recognizing Canonical Books" by Bob and Gretchen Passantino Is it authoritative? Did it come with the authority of God? Is it prophetic? Was it written by a man of God? Is it authentic? Did it tell the truth about God, man, etc.? Is it dynamic? Did it come with the life-transforming power of God? Was it received (i.e. collected, read, and used)? Was it accepted by the people of God? Was it written by an authoritative writer, a founding stone of the church or an eyewitness to the events? Did the people who knew of the alleged events have the chance to falsify them? Copyright 2001 by Bob and Gretchen Passantino |

8 | Was human propogation incestuous? | Bible general Archive 3 | Tim3:16 | 182187
Hi rodent_tamer, Merriam Webster Dictionary defines incest thusly: sexual intercourse between persons so closely related that they are forbidden by law to marry. Adam and Eve would necessarily be exempt from the law of incest, since it was not invented yet. My understanding of the danger in producing offspring with a close relative is due to malfunctions in the DNA coding of our present day genes. The DNA present in our ancestors bodies on the early earth would have been pure enough and without mutations to allow brothers and sisters to produce healthy offspring without risk of birth defect. Again, this is what I have heard, so it is only an opinion. Blessings, Tim |

9 | To whom I love more? | Bible general Archive 2 | Tim3:16 | 126422
Jesus was simply saying that nothing can come between you and God - no family members nor the instinct of self-preservation Think of the boldness Jesus exhibits! He commands nothing short of ultimate commitment, and we give it to Him - why? Not because it is something we have to do, but it is something that we want to do. Because of love. When we know the love of Jesus; when we are in a love-relationship with Him, only then can we be committed to Him like this. Napoleon once said: "I know men; and I tell you that Jesus Christ is no mere man. Between him and every other person in the world there is no possible term of comparison. Alexander [the Great], Caesar, Charlemagne, and I have founded empires. But on what did we rest the creations of our genius? Upon force. Jesus Christ founded his empire upon love; and this hour millions of men would die for him." Hate is a strong word, but that is exactly how it might seem to family members or friends when we put Jesus in front of them. |

10 | CanIlove my wife more than I love jesus? | Bible general Archive 2 | Tim3:16 | 126508
jain george, Jesus tells us in Matt 6:33, "But seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Here we are not told to seek any pleasures for ourself, much less the pleasures of God's kingdom, for there is nothing we can do to seek them effectively. What we are told, is to seek ye first the Kingdom. Jesus tells us how to do this as well. If we love Him, we will obey His commands. One other thing is to look at the word JOY as an acronym that stands for : Jesus Others Yourself If we live our lives and priorities in that order, there should be no problem understanding His will |

11 | Christian Polygamy? | Bible general Archive 2 | Tim3:16 | 156431
Well, in 1 corinthians 7:4 it says we do not have power of our own body, but that power belongs to our spouse. If we have two spouses, then each one would have power over 50 percent of us, and if we had 5 spouses, then each spouse would have power over 20 percent of us. That is not a situation that lines up with God's inspired word, Agreed? Tim PS, I enjoy the 700 club as well, but with anything else that is on TV, you must take it in, and decide whether it lines up with God's truth or not. |

12 | Should women lead and teach in ministry? | NT general Archive 1 | Tim3:16 | 181263
It is not unheard of, see the following verse. "Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappodoth, was judging Israel at that time. She used to sit under the palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim; and the people of Israel came up to her for judgment," (4:4-5). For argument's sake, I would say it would not be a wise career choice for a woman to seek a position of spiritual authority over a man, but she is always welcome to minister to women in that capacity. This is not definitive, just my opinion. God Bless you and yours, Tim |

According to Walter Brown's hydroplate theory, the Earth's crust once floated upon a thin layer of water which was under great pressure. Further, I feel that any speculation that is beyond the information which God decided was necessary is likely to be risky. Tim |

14 | what is this verse saying | Gen 4:7 | Tim3:16 | 182424
Jesusisfriend, Here, God is explaining to Cain that sin in his life had caused his offering to be rejected. First, lets take a look in as many translations as it takes to get the intent of the verse, I found this in the New Living Translation, starting with verse 6 for context, and after NLT, I also pasted for you Darby's just for balance. Genesis 4:6-7 6"Why are you so angry?" the Lord asked him. "Why do you look so dejected? 7 You will be accepted if you respond in the right way. But if you refuse to respond correctly, then watch out! Sin is waiting to attack and destroy you, and you must subdue it." NLT 6 And Jehovah said to Cain, Why art thou angry, and why is thy countenance fallen? Gen 7 If thou doest well, will not [thy countenance] look up [with confidence]? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door; and unto thee [shall be] his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. DARBY We now can interpret this two ways. First, from the beginning of God's dealings with mankind, He shows a major objective for man is to be accomplished by overcoming, mastering sin's desire to control and manipulate. Sin's desire is always lurking within man's moral and ethical choices, and he needs to be aware of it and have the drive to conquer it. Second, it is a warning contained in a prophecy to all but given specifically to Cain. God perceived in him a strong proclivity to sin, so much that he would become a master of it. In today's parlance, Cain would become a real "pro" at sinning. The warning is not to allow oneself to follow Cain's example, which gives the impression that he nurtured sin dwelling in him. 15 | Explantation of Gen. 6:1-6 | Gen 6:2 | Tim3:16 | 127593
Hi tgc, following are from some of my favorite biblical commentaries, I would like to share their insight with you. The sons of God (that is, the professors of religion, who were called by the name of the Lord, and called upon that name), married the daughters of men, that is, those that were profane, and strangers to God and godliness. The posterity of Seth did not keep by themselves, as they ought to have done, both for the preservation of their own purity and in detestation of the apostasy. They intermingled themselves with the excommunicated race of Cain: They took them wives of all that they chose. -Matthew Henry And, this from David Guzik, who is the director of Calvary Chapel Bible College, Germany: "Many people have understood that the sons of God were those from the line of Seth, and the daughters of men were from the line of Cain, and this describes an intermarriage between the godly and the ungodly - something God specifically prohibits (Deuteronomy 7:1-4; 2 Corinthians 6:14) It is more accurate to see the sons of God as either demons (angels in rebellion against God) or uniquely demon possessed men, and the daughters of men as human women The phrase sons of God clearly refers to angelic creatures when it is used the three other times in the Old Testament (Job 1:6, 2:1, and 38:7). Why would Satan send his angels to intermarry (either directly or indirectly) with human women? Satan was trying to pollute the genetic "pool" of mankind with a satanic corruption; to put a genetic "virus" that would make the human race unfit for bringing forth the Seed of the woman - the Messiah - promised in Genesis 3:15 "The Savior could not be born of a demon-possessed mother. So if Satan could succeed in infecting the entire race, the deliverer could not come." (Boice) Blessings, tim |

16 | who was naborth in th bible | Gen 11:25 | Tim3:16 | 169347
Sorry, sheryl4christ ! The word naborth doesn't occur in the KJV. The closest I could find, is Nahor. Gen 11 starts out the account of Nahor, which means "snorting" in Hebrew. Nahor was the name of both the grandfather and a brother of Abraham in the Old Testament. Gen 11:22 Serug lived thirty years, and begot Nahor. 23 After he begot Nahor, Serug lived two hundred years, and begot sons and daughters. 24 Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and begot Terah. 25 After he begot Terah, Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years, and begot sons and daughters. Hope this helps, God Bless your search. Tim |

17 | genesis 34:1-12 | Gen 12:13 | Tim3:16 | 170068
Sorry, I replied to the wrong post...According to Judaism 101 , which is an online encyclopedia of Judaism, Women have held positions of respect in Judaism since biblical times. Miriam is considered one of the liberators of the Children of Israel, along with her brothers Moses and Aaron. One of the Judges (Deborah) was a woman. Seven of the 55 prophets of the Bible were women According to traditional Judaism, women are endowed with a greater degree of "binah" (intuition, understanding, intelligence) than men. The rabbis inferred this from the fact that woman was "built" (Gen. 2:22) rather than "formed" (Gen. 2:7), and the Hebrew root of "build" has the same consonants as the word "binah." It is my belief that men and women made the same mistakes in the OT that they do in the NT, proving that the players only change, -the game remains the same. Respectfully yours, Tim |

19 | what are all the names God is called? | Ex 3:13 | Tim3:16 | 208632
barbarabradbury, The Name of God, or Holy Name is the name in Eastern or Western spiritual traditions or religions that is used in practice or prayer. However, conceptions of God can vary widely, but the word God in English is normally used for all or many of them. Other languages have generic names and the word for "God" in one language can be understood by speakers of foreign languages as the name of a specific deity worshipped by speakers of that particular language. There are at least 100 names used for God in english, the Jewish people dare not speak -or write His name, out of reverence, But as the Bible teaches, Jesus is actually our brother, I prefer Father -as in spiritual father. 20 | what verses refer to student study respo | Deut 6:7 | Tim3:16 | 208686
Hi CGomes, Please forgive me if I jumped to a conclusion here, but when you say study, I am presuming you mean scriptural studies?? The context that I would like to lead you to is preceded by this well known verse: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. (Deu 6:5) The verse above should be memorized by a diligent student, through to verse 9. What this means is we are commanded by these verses to make God's Word saturate our environment. This shows where we place the priorities in our lives through our daily choices. The study of Scripture, therefore is the responsibility of every believer, It is the capability of every believer, and it is the Privelege of every believer. I say believer, because the meanings of Jesus' parables were obscured to the casual listener. Therefore we are granted certain requirements for learning, that the world does not necessarily possess, so I consider them as "gifts." The first requirement of learning is a New Heart, which gives us the capacity to learn. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing. Secondly we must have a Hungry Heart, by which we gain the motivation to learn. Third is a Teachable Heart which is simply the openness to learn, as in "Do not harden your heart" Fourth is a Disciplined Heart which brings to us our commitment to learn, and comes from the word, 'disciple' Lastly, we will need an Obedient Heart which is excercised in the commitment to walk out what you have learned, by not being hearers only, but doers of the Word. Now is the prime question: Why would we want to study Scripture? There is of course much work involved, as in anything worthwhile, it is worth working for. Bible Knowledge is like precious ore in a mine -you find it when you are determined enough to get it. We are motivated to learn when we perceive that it is something that will benefit us. And remeber, the enemy of our souls has a vested interest in distancing us from God's Word. After all that, I will take you to the obvious verse, one that should not be overlooked, and that is 2Tim 3:16-17: 2Ti 3:16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 2Ti 3:17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. God's Love to you and yours, Tim |
