1 | Medium summons Samuel? | 1 Sam 28:12 | itiswritten | 80028 | ||
First of all it was forbidden by God and against the law according to the kingdom, that anyone should call up the dead to speak with them. This offence was punishable by death. This is why the witch was so distraught when Samuel acutally appeared and was manifested. Somehow, at the same time, it was revealed to her that the man before her was the king - and this meant that she was uncovered as a witch before the ultimate prosecutor of the law. I do not believe that she was actually able to summon Samuel. I believe this was a deliberate act of God as the witch was very shocked (she cried out). It seems God was quite angry with Saul. First of all he had been appointed to uphold the law and lead the people and he was committing one of the ultimate crimes. And in this case, Samuel did act as he had for Saul before, to give him direction according to the word of God. In this case, the king and his family was cursed and he was told a terrible future. We are not to ask the specific future. Though He may give us a glimpse, we should not expect Him to unfold the details to us. We are supposed to trust Him day by day (Matthew 6:28-29) Saul, having been selected to lead the people and to uphold the law had failed miserably and I believe he was set at a higher standard according to his great calling and responsibility and God decided he would not continue in this important role, and neither would his descendants. These are my feelings on the topic. I will be interested to see what anyone else may think regarding this interesting moment in Scripture. Itiswritten. |

Hi Itiswritten, You have given us some good things to consider. You have written: "I do not believe that she was actually able to summon Samuel. I believe this was a deliberate act of God as the witch was very shocked (she cried out)." I agree with you, for the 12th verse does not say that she did anything, only that she saw Samuel. Plus, in the 15th verse Samuel said to Saul (not the woman), "Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?" I believe that this is an evil spirit from the Lord terrorizing him. I compare 1 Samuel 28:18 "so the Lord has done this thing to you this day," with 1 Samuel 16:14, "and an evil spirit from the Lord terrorized him." One reason that I believe that it was an evil spirit is the fact that he allowed Saul to give him homage in verse 14. Also, the woman says that she saw "a divine being" coming up out of the earth. No, Samuel was not to be given homage. I see other comparison of Scripture that show me that God is in charge. It is God who has brought the end of Saul's kingdom, not David. From the heart, Ray |
