Jeremiah 18:18, 26:8 Jeremiah was being persecuted by many and even at edge of death for his prophesying which the people claimed as false. I want to know what was the status of a prophet at the time of Jeremiah's. In Ch 27 v1-15, what Jeremiah said appeared to show him a betrayer (base on a national perspective). It is interesting to see those priests and other prophets did not charge Jeremiah for his betrayal discourse, but false prophesying. Your input and enlightenment is appreciated. Shalom Azure |

I'm no expert on Jewish history or even the Old Testament prophets, but I'll try to draw you a picture anyway. During the time of Jeremiah, Israel saw an invasion by King Nebuchadnezzar, with much of Israel taken back to Babylon. Jeremiah was kidnapped and taken to Egypt where he continued to prophesy. His message, however, was not one of encouragement, but, rather, one of judgement. If you were in the position of the average Jewish person, how would you respond to someone preaching God's judgement. I, for one, would be terribly aggravated. If I had lost my country and my people, the last thing I would want to listen to would be some guy telling me how mad God was with me. As a result, I would have to say that godly prophets in Jeremiah's time were probably despised. | ||||||

Dear F.o.o.t, Thank you for your input. By the end of 2007, I had the privilege to attend a short (very short indeed, just an hour or so) seminar of Dr. J.R. Lundbom's study on "Jeremiah's New Covenant for the Church and the World". In his handout note he wrote "A century earlier, Isaiah had expanded the Davidic covenant to include Jerusalem adn the Temple, preaching that Zion was inviolable (Isa 31:4-5, 37:33-35), but now Jeremiah considers this a false theology upon which people are resting vain hopes. Von Rad therefore says the prophetic message is not timeless truth, but a 'particular word relevant to a particular hour in history.'" Therefore, we may see that the contemporary prophets of Jeremiah's were talking about peace, peace, peace while in fact the invasion by Babylon was close at hand as prophesied by Jeremiah in contrast to their beliefs. Azure Was the handout that you received suggesting that Isaiah himself was at fault in his preaching or that the people had misinterpreted or overexpanded upon his message? I only wish to clarify. |

I believe the latter is more appropriate to explain our understanding of certain prophetic messages. "Von Rad therefore says the prophetic message is not timeless truth, but a 'particular word relevant to a particular hour in history'" Shalom Azure |
