Hi, Marji... Welcome to the forum! I do not think that one can make a persuasive argument that women held the office of deacon in Scripture, nor that such a practice was advocated by the apostles. Matt Slick does a pretty good treatment of this question here: http://carm.org/there-were-deaconesses-so-there-can-be-female-elders-and-pastors Of course, women have a special service in the church. I am always amazed when I consider, for example, Titus 2:3-5. Imagine, women can actually have an active role in preventing the Word of God from being reviled! In Him, Doc |

I find now where in Christ's New Testament where a woman is authorized to be a Preacher, Elder (Paster) or a deacon, Christ said, 1 Timothy 2:12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man ( Which means Publicly because we have examples of teaching unlearned men in private), but to be in silence and also Revelation 22:18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. Which most are guilty of. Ignorance of God's Word is no excuse. |

I'm not sure what is meant by the Note of acts 2:17 but if you have studied Christ's New testament you will have learned that this verse refers to the day the Day of Pentacost when the Apostles ONLY were given the power of the Spirit and the remaining day of their lives when they were allowed to pass this power to other people but when the apostles had all died this power to mankind no longer existed. 1 Corinthians 13:8 ¶Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. 9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. Christ said "Many are called but FEW be chosen" so 2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Don't take my word for it LEARN Christ's WORD. |

In all fairness that is the stance of one side of Christian theology. There is another side equally valid that disagrees. The main point of contention is the word "perfect: in Verse 1Cor 13:10. Some say the perfect is the completion of the New Testament Canon and others say it will be the second coming of Christ. If in fact the "perfect" is the second coming then , prophecy, tongues and knowledge are still active in today's church. The Cessationist (those that feel the gifts have stopped) are basically from the Reformed school of Theology and those that feel the gifts are still in use today are from the Wesleyan Theological side of the house. This discussion has raged in the church since the first century church and is alive and well today. |
