I'm looking for the verse that says something like this; "in the end we will look upon the devil and say 'this is what we feared?' It is rarely quoted but I've read it before...just can't find it. help?
2 | verse about devil's insignificance | Bible general Archive 4 | EdB | 234729
not sure but I think that is a quote from a novel and is speaking about death. It is based on 1 Cor 15:54,55
3 | verse about devil's insignificance | Bible general Archive 4 | brian c | 234730
thanks but that verse is the 'death is swallowed up in victory' verse. Not what i am referring to. What I'm talking about is NOT from novel but is a scripture. It should read pretty closely to the way I quoted it. The conveyed message is that the devil is shown to be so much less that we thought him to be. I can't recall the exact wording so I can't find it in a search on bible sites. someone out there knows it though. thank you

Hi, Brian... Perhaps this is what you are looking for: "Those who see you will gaze at you, They will ponder over you, saying, 'Is this the man who made the earth tremble, Who shook kingdoms, Who made the world like a wilderness And overthrew its cities, Who did not allow his prisoners to go home?'" (Isaiah 14:16-17) In Him, Doc |

Thank you Doc. I think you found it although this is not quite as I remembered it. Either my memory has rewritten it or there is a very similar reference to this verse somewhere else...maybe in the new testament. Thanks again, brian |

Dear Brian, What happens for me, sometimes, is that I remember the impression from a sermon more vividly than the passage itself. In this particular case, the word that the NASB translates as "stare" and the ESV translates as "gaze" probably don't quite carry the connotation of what Isaiah had written. I remember an expositor who once said that the word might be translated "squint" or "looking askance." Thus, "THAT was what everyone was so worried about???" As a disclaimer I have to point out that the passage, in context, may also be interpreted as a reference to "the body of the king of Babylon cast out." On the other hand, Isaiah has a distinction of making multiple connection in a simultaneous fashion. I would not -- for whatever that is worth -- be uncomfortable, therefore, with an interpretation that makes this a connection to the adversary; i.e., Satan. In Him, Doc |

Hi Doc, I've been wondering whether what you describe is what happened ie...the impression stuck while the actual text flew away! The impression I got many years back was just as you said (quote)"THAT was what everyone was so worried about???" Funny though, someone mentioned the text to me just a year or so ago and I don't recall it being this one in Isaiah. Seems it was more concise but it is probably just as you speculated. And yes this is, I think, indicating the king of Babylon but as a type and shadow of things to come. At any rate, Jesus Himself was fond of quoting Isaiah and the old prophet was pointing to the cross where quoted by the Lord. So I too am not uncomfortable interpreting this verse as pointing to the defeat and exposure of the deceiver as little more than a self inflated liar. Thanks for the good input! Brian |
