Dear G, I do not necessarily agree or disagree. We are a Bible Study Forum. While blanket assertions based on some other authority than Scripture may be interesting in understanding the particular personality, mind-set, and experience of G. Preston -- doubtless a worthy study in itself -- our focus here is the study of the Bible. In Him, Doc |

Doc, Your inference that I use intel other than G-d's word is troubling, to say the least. Consenus as to methodology is usually a challenge. I use the Bible to garner understanding. Secondary/residual writings rarely get my attention. We must remember G-d charges each of us to reach our own conclusions from His word ...which includes intent by use of common sense. |

Hi, Austin... That's true... but in a Study Bible Forum it is the first step for any kind of deliberation. It is also stated in the Terms of use. Concerning false teachers, you might be interested in post #156049 and #182013. I did a series of posts in a thread starting in #156916 on notes I had made in hermeneutics classes I took. Hi, Mike... Look closely at the context of the quote, the context of the paragraph; who is being discussed? what is scriptural context? what was the issue Paul was addressing? I think you can work it out linguistically. We could dig deeply into the theology of the particular terminology -- I can help you with that if you want -- but I don't think that that would serve Fowler's intended purpose; i.e., how he meant to be understood.
