1 | Jude quotes Enoch? | Bible general Archive 3 | mark d seyler | 184127 | ||
Hi West, I would say that the answer to your question is contained in your post. If we stick to what the Bible tells us, Jude cites his source, Enoch. So apparently, this quotation comes from Enoch. As we know that all Scripture is "God-breathed", this likewise was given by God to Jude to write. As you say, the source is not specified, other than coming by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, therefore, we should not assume a particular intermediary source. The only answer that is supported by Scripture is that the Holy Spirit inspired Jude to record a prophecy given by Enoch. The fact that the "book of Enoch" also quotes Enoch's prophecy really has no significance to this question. The book of Enoch is not considered canonical, nor is it considered to even have been written by Enoch. Many people make the assumption that Jude is quoting from the book of Enoch, but Jude and the book of Enoch could just as easily be quoting from a separate source. I hope this helps! Dear Mark, Thank you for providing further feedback to my original question. Perhaps, I could have worded the question better. Your answer is probably the most succinct and accurate in terms of replying to the intent of my question. Essentially, I was asking if Jude was referring to another part of the Bible that I may have (inadvertently and apparently) missed. However, interestingly and unintentionally, via the previous responses to my question--I was also reminded of the "under-the-surface" issue (among some believers or bible scholars) touching on the question of the inspiration of the book of Jude itself. I had more-or-less forgotten about that topic, as well as not recalling the existence of the group of writings sometimes referred to psuedographical (sp?). It has been a long time since I first heard of those "other" writings, as well the possible (debabteable) connection with the book of Jude of the so-called Book of Enoch. Also, though knowing some of the character and person of Enoch, I am not aware of quotes from him found anywhere else, except in Jude. I thought some other references might be found say, in one of the Major or Minor prophets, for example. Here, where I'm currenltly living, access to commentaries and other biblical helps is somewhat lacking. Though I hope to change this soon. Too, the actual apparent quote from Enoch is quite interesting, and thus I'd be interested in reading more, assuming the quote was or is taken from a longer piece that, in fact, exists in writing. I don't know of any such piece of writing, thus the question. Finally, having done a fair bit of reading and research on the exact chronology of persons listed (as far as what is known, from Genesis) from Adam to Noah, and beyond, I am always interested in trying to learn more details of the life and thinking of this otherwise somewhat mysterious person--Enoch. Thanks again for the coherent, clearly worded response. That's what I was looking for. A brother in Christ (in Japan) Walter, aka WestOfCA |

I, too, was interested in reading more about this book, as well as the other writings you mentioned. Maybe I can save you the time and effort - they fall drastically short of what we Protestant Christians are used to (I say Protestant because many of them can be found in the Catholic Bible). The ones that I read a bit from took me back 30plus years to my days of Hermann Hess's Sidhatha and Kahil Gibran's The Prophet. Beautiful books but just stories. Stick to the Bible as we are blessed to have. It's enough. Thank you for listening. |
