divorce: it's not all that's on divorce in the NT, but it might help christians commanded not to divorce Mat_19:3-6 Mar_10:6-9 Heb_13:4 if you are married do not seek a divorce 1Co_7:25-28 a husband does not leave his wife 1Co_7:10-11 covenant-breakers Rom_1:28-32 factious people Tit_3:10-11 verses showing divorce is ok 1Co_7:10-11 1Co_7:12-14 1Co_7:15-16 divorce and re-marriage 1Co_7:39-40 a divorced woman must be reconciled to her husband 1Co_7:10-11 Paul's commandment 1Co_7:25-28 was given 30? years after Jesus Christ ascended. Does a latter command rule out an earlier one. Jesus Christ said don't preach to the Gentiles, then to Paul, He said yes. Since some churches basically allow divorce and remarriage, if a woman wants to reconcile to her divorced husband who has remarried, then she is not obeying 1Co_7:10-11 'For married people I have a command which is not my own ****but the Lord's****: a wife must not leave her husband; but if she does, she must remain single or else be reconciled to her husband" therefore does the church exist as a stumbling block for allowing the remarriage, to the extent she wants to obey God but can't? |

Recognize the progress of revelation Leslie N: You raise a good point when you write: "Does a latter command rule out an earlier one. Jesus Christ said don't preach to the Gentiles, then to Paul, He said yes." Matthew 10:5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: 6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. God had the authority to add or even change in one era what He had given in another. What God revealed as binding in one period may be rescinded in another, not by man but by God Himself. "Recognize the progress of revelation. Remember that the Bible was not handed down all at once as a complete book but that it came from God through many different writers over a period of about 1,600 years. This means that in the progress of revealing His message to man, God may add or even change in one era what He had given in another. "The New Testament adds much that was not revealed in the Old. Furthermore, what God revealed as binding in one period may be rescinded in another...This is most important; otherwise, the Bible would contain apparently unresolvable contradictions (as Matt 10:5-7 compared with 28:18-20)" (Ryrie Study Bible, Moody, 1978). Jesus tells us that it is unrighteous to divorce our spouse for just any reason, but that it is permissable to divorce for immorality (adultery KJV). See Mathew Chapter 19, verses 3-9. God also tells us that He "hates divorce" [Malachi 2:16]. Read the whole of Malachi chapter 2 for context. Divorce is never a good thing (I am sure you know this), but it can become the only option. Even God divorces his wife. Read Jeremiah Chapter 3, verse 8 to see this in context. God is explaining that He was left with no option because of the repeated immorality of His wife. If you speak the truth, your transgression is neither sin nor impardonable. It seems as though you did the right thing. | ||||||
