I recommend the NRSV HARPER STUDY BIBLE: Expanded and Updated, study helps written by Harold Lindsell, Zondervan, 1991 (ISBN: 0310902037). (Available at Amazon.com) (Note: it is NOT the HarperCollins Study Bible that I recommend. That is an entirely different book.) I have enjoyed this study Bible for years and would recommend it to anyone. It contains study notes from a conservative, evangelical perspective. The study notes were edited by the late Dr. Harold Lindsell, an evangelical theologian known for his defense of biblical inerrancy. I see you already have the NIV Study Bible. This is one of the most denominationally neutral study Bibles I've seen. It seems to me the study notes are well-balanced, not pushing teachings from any particular denominational perspective. Finally, I recommend the online article, HOW TO CHOOSE A STUDY BIBLE by John R. Kohlenberger III at (www.equip.org/free/DB135.htm). |

Thank you very much. I will definitely be looking into this. I noticed that you also mentioned the NEW AMERICAN BIBLE and the ST. JOSEPH EDITION. Could you tell me about these? Also, let me take a moment to share what I call my "dream bible," since I have never been able to find one. My ideal specifications are: - a literal translation (NAS or something like it, but not KJV or NKJV- the best would be NAS updated version) - wide margins - good exegetical, historical, and cross reference notes. - book introductions - non calvinistic, non dispensational notes - maps and concordance would be nice, but not necessary *** I have already been looking at the Thompson Chain Reference and the Key Word Study bibles, but since I am so specific even those fail my expectations. If anyone has an idea that would make my day! ischus |

You can go online and read the text of the New American Bible (NAB) including the excellent footnotes at (http://www.usccb.org/nab/bible/index.htm) I don't know much about the St. Joseph Edition. You can look it up at amazon.com to read a description and customer reviews. I prefer reviews written by customers (real people) over those written by editors, professional reviewers and various scholars. Nothing wrong with the latter group, but I can relate more to the needs and expectations of non-professionals and how and to what degree these are met for ordinary, everyday laypersons. I recommend you ask the user Emmaus for more information on the St. Joseph Study Edition. Emmaus is very knowledgeable in the Bible and a person you can trust. |
