1 | Worship and Bible Study: Can we do both? | NT general Archive 1 | HHannaJr | 28796
In the past, Christendom has been divided into two camps: Either you go deep and search the scriptures (Fundamentalists)or you get caught up in the Baptism of The Holy Spirit (the Charismatic movement). Why is it that charismatics are not Bible fundamentalists and vice versa? Why can't we both search the Bible deeply and be able to worship and praise Christ "In Spirit and In Truth"? HHannaJr |

HHannajr Hi I believe this is the first time we have talked. You make an interesting statement “Either you go deep and search the scriptures (Fundamentalists)or you get caught up in the Baptism of The Holy Spirit (the Charismatic movement). Why is it that charismatics are not Bible fundamentalists and vice versa?” On what do you base this observation? I’m sure men like Jack Hayford would disagree that they do not study the Bible yet he is very much Charismatic. We have many on this forum that are both bible scholars and charismatic, so I’m not sure on what your basing your hypothesis. Please explain the basis for your question and I’m sure there will be many willing to respond. EdB |

Good morning EdB. I have been involved with both fundamentalists and charismatics over the past 27 years. Many fundamentalists that I know are sticklers for precedents in the Bible. They do not follow the charismatic movement because many Sprit filled believers are not Biblically minded. They are "experiencially minded". However, I see those same fundamentalists and Spirit filled believers evangelizing alongside me. They do have their priority on reaching others for Christ in order. I also have many Bible fundamentalist friends who frown on Praise and Worship. Why? Why can't we be both sticklers for being careful students of the Bible and enjoy Praise, Worship, and the ministry of The Holy Spirit? I believe we can do both, but Christendom seems to be dichotomized into these 2 camps.

Good Morning to you! I think what you are seeing is abuses on both sides. Some Charismatics lose sight of purpose of the gifts and focus on the manifestations or experience rather than on God and Scripture. Some Fundamentalist see this and over react refusing to allow any form of worship that may evoke emotions or excitement. In a well balanced church of either persuasion you should find an emphasis on prayer, Bible study, seeking more of God and a freedom of worship. Now some churches may have a more traditional worship style (hymns, hymnals, and organs) while other churches may be more contemporary (choruses, projecting the words on the wall, drums and keyboards). In either style the emphasis should be on the worship of God not evoking the emotions of the participants. That is not to say the participants do not get emotional involved. That is saying the focus is to worship God not to manipulate and control the emotions of the worshippers. There are both charismatic and fundamental churches that accomplish this. I hope this answers your questions. EdB |
