1 | Compare the annointings of Jesus? | NT general Archive 1 | Mommapbs | 25698
The instance of Jesus being annointed as recorded in Matthew 6: 6-13, John 12:1-8, and Mark 14:2-9 was just prior to His crucifixion. It is different from the anointing as described in Luke 7:36-50. John 11:2 indicates that Mary, the sister of Lazarus did the annointing. The account in Luke places Jesus in the home of Simon (the pharisee) and the annointing was done by a woman with a sinful past - was this a polite term for prostitution? Could this have been Mary Magdalene? It is interesting to note that Mary, the sister of Lazarus, followed the example of a prostitute!Comments on this welcomed! |

2 | Compare the annointings of Jesus? | NT general Archive 1 | srbaegon | 25699
Good afternoon! To answer your questions: Yes, the gospel writers were using polite terms for prostitution. The woman could have been anybody. We just do not know. I'm not sure one can say Mary followed the example, but rather that they both had the same great idea. As a side note, a comparison of the two anointings is an interesting study. Both hosted by Simon--one an outcast, the other a dignitary. At the Pharisee's house one went away righteous. At the leper's house, one went away condemned. Comparisons of the places Jesus was anointed--head and feet. Responses by the attendees of the action. Great stuff! Steve |
