The Holy Spirit does not give us "powers". He gives us gifts. The gift of discernment, the gift of understanding, the gift of teaching, or preaching, or encouraging, or serving...ect. The Holy Spirit also empowers us to live for God by guiding and teaching us what scripture says when we are reading it. He also give us strength to tell others about the gospel message and helps us remember the verses to share with others.

"The Holy Spirit does not give us "powers". He gives us gifts." All of the Holy Spirit is given to us as the "Unction to Function". He is the 'Linen Garment' spoken of in Esk.44.17,18. Jesus baptises with the Holy Ghost and with fire. See Acts 2. That still happens today. "The gift of discernment",...yes "the gift of understanding",...I think no. "the gift of teaching, or preaching, or encouraging, or serving...ect.....None of the these are gifts and serving is more of a fruit. "The Holy Spirit also empowers us to live for God No. That you do because you love God. The love you have for Him should be sufficient. "by guiding and teaching us what scripture says when we are reading it..... Yes. "He also give us strength to tell others about the gospel message and helps us remember the verses to share with others." Strength should be a "Wisdom" as to when to speak combine with what to say.."word of knowledge". Can you see why the baptism [per Acts 2] is so important? Nine Gifts: 1 Cor. 12:7-10 (KJV) But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. Word of wisdom Word of knowledge Faith Gifts of healing Working of miracles; Prophecy Discerning of spirits Divers kinds of tongues Interpretation of tongues: Five administrations: Apostles, Pastors, Teachers, Evangelists, Helps. Three offices; Prophet, Priest, King. Hope this has been a "Help" to you. Ken |

Hello Ken, Evangelica was more correct concerning gifts. Consider the following: Romans 12:6-8 (ESV) Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; [7] if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; [8] the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. You say the Holy Spirit doesn't give power for living? What about: Romans 15:13 (ESV) May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Ephes. 3:16 (ESV) that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, You said: [Strength should be a "Wisdom" as to when to speak combine with what to say.."word of knowledge".] Chapter and verse please. Steve |

[Evangelica was more correct concerning gifts. Consider the following] Context, Steve, context. I don't believe you know how to "discern" when you read to learn what the scriptures are saying. Consequently your "wisdom" and word of "knowledge suffers. For instance: It is the Grace of God, not Graces. It is the gift from God, the Holy Spirit.. who gives gifts to men. If you wish to say being an Apostle is a gift of God you would be correct but it is an Adminstration and not a gift in the sense of the Holy Ghost who adiministers gifts to edify the Church and build one up in the Holy Ghost. Get my drift? [Romans 15:13 (ESV) May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.] Yes...And. The above mentions joy. What "joy" would that be, Steve? [Ephes. 3:16 (ESV) that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being,] .....In your inner being. Do you know how that happens? When you see it [with your spiritual eyes] you will understand it is His power of Himself in you functioning and not power that He gives you...And no you are not made into a robot because the Spirit is always subject to the Prophet.1 Cor. 14:32 (NASB) and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets; Read 1 Corth 14.(NASB) For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries......The One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself...." I.e., builds himself up in the Holy Ghost. It is Him in you and upon you that is the strength, not just something He gives you should you be lacking the Mind of God. [Maybe you'd like to correct me for saying Mind of God instead of Mind os Christ?] [You said: [Strength should be a "Wisdom" as to when to speak combine with what to say.."word of knowledge".] Chapter and verse? How about common sense when reading the text in context? You should know what the context is by now. I don't know anyone who needs strength to speak except the one with larengitis [sp?]. Therefore I conclude wisdom be the thing that is needed as to when we should speak the word of knowledge. |

Ken hepting - Your message to Steve: "I don't believe you know how to 'discern' when you read to learn what the scriptures are saying." ..... Do you really find it necessary to pontificate to Steve, and do you presume that Steve really gives a happy hoot what you think about his ability to 'discern' Scripture? ..... Steve asked you for chapter and verse. You say, 'how about common sense.' Since this is a StudyBibleForum, let's stick with chapter and verse. Do you have one to offer Steve on the subject he requested? --Hank

[Steve asked you for chapter and verse. You say, 'how about common sense.' Since this is a StudyBibleForum, let's stick with chapter and verse. Do you have one to offer Steve on the subject he requested? --Hank] There is no chapter and verse many times that speak with specifics when explaining ones understanding of scripture. Most of the time it is scriptures that paint the picture and must be taken in context. Chapter and verse for what he asked is silly. How's that? She said strength...I said it should be wisdom. That's my opinion based on the scripture[s]. Now what's the need for "chapter and verse" except to be disagreeable...That's sad. And as far as me pontificating to Steve... He's presented himself to me as one who is arrogant. |

Ken hepting - Steve has been a responsible user of this Forum for nearly two and a half years. He has got on well with his peers on the Forum and has earned the respect of nearly everyone on the Forum and that certainly includes me. I would suggest to you, Ken, that before you start calling people like Steve arrogant you examine closely the manner in which you have been interacting with others on the Forum. Do you understand what I'm saying? --Hank

[Ken hepting - Steve has been a responsible user of this Forum for nearly two and a half years. --Hank ] I understand perfectly well what you are saying but when anyone [and I don't give a hoot who it is] chooses to change my words or misrepresent what I state and then declare me to be "wrong"..."Bad theology", without a hint of kindness. ...He/She is arrogant and FULL of PRIDE. If that fits anyone here from convictions maybe they should to take note. I've done injury to no one's "Christianity" and have done my utmost to be accurate without protecting any agenda driven by dogma from the past; False teaching that enslaves and is cruel. You people seem to relish in it and then turn three shades of anger when anyone reveals it or approaches it's doorstep. There is even one individual here who asked a question and received many answers but none satisfied, ...got indignant until the right one was given and then said "That's the one I was after" or was looking for then began to praise the one who gave it [who was all wet]. So what's with that? The answer was already known by that individual and wanted it spoken by someone else? I was puzzled but now I believe a understand. Is this, a platform for pushing one's agenda or for sharing thoughts, ideas and insight from what one reads. Do you think you have all the truth...Forget it! Have you connected all the dots in the mystery of Christ and His Church? You can forget that, too. Maybe you all to grow up a little, stop your crying and see the liberty in Christ that is there for everyone who loves Him. Maybe that's the ticket..stop being superficial. With exception, I haven't heard one of you with depth of knowledge who would last ten minutes with one who does. That's sad....pitiful. Ken |

Hello Ken, I haven't changed your words, I've quoted them and challenged you concerning them. Also, I believe I said it was George McDonald who had bad theology. I admit to being very dogmatic. I make no apology for this. No kindness was extended because you were misinterpreting Scripture and stating it as truth. [With exception, I haven't heard one of you with depth of knowledge who would last ten minutes with one who does. That's sad....pitiful.] I guess that depends on your definition of "depth of knowledge" and of what field of knowledge. As for knowledge of the Scriptures, we have many here who are fine students, and to denigrate them is arrogant and prideful. Steve |
