1 | Question on spiritual covering? | Bible general Archive 1 | Searcher56 | 11998
There, a church probably has one of three governments; pastor-rule, elder-rule and congregation-rule ... or some combination. They all use Scripture to support their type of rule. It is a minor point. Whatever the consitution of the church says, we must all follow, including Shannon. Peter does warn the leaders not to lord over the people, as you have stated. However, they are overseers and shepherds (vs 2). Those that they oversee must submit, else everyone could do what is right in his own eyes. The shepherd directs the sheep. This is supported by verse 5, where the young men are to be submissive ... 2:13-3:6 also gives this idea, as well as Hebrews 13:17. Steve 1Peter 5:1-4 |

2 | How much authority... | Bible general Archive 1 | There | 12006
Steve, I realize that there is a structure in today's church systems. But Shannon was not having a bible study in a church building. She was having it in her home. The pastor as an authoritive leader is not the authoritive head in her home. So how far do you think we must carry that pastor's authority into our homes in other areas? Overseeing a body of believers and watching out for their spiritual well-being would not give that person the authority to make all decisions for the individuals in a particular body of believers. Would one need his permission to study as a family as well? I guess I didn't know that anyone thought all groupings that study Bible together are under some other person's authority, pastor or otherwise. I thought God was our central authority when it comes to understanding His Word. Since spiritual things can only be understood by those who are spiritual ... Are we in trouble on this forum for not getting a pastor's permission to discuss or study Bible? :) |

3 | How much authority... | Bible general Archive 1 | Searcher56 | 12011
There, It depends on if the Bible study is part of the church. Some have Bible studies as part of a small group of the church. Others have a Bible study that do not have other church members, or a very few. If there are more than a few members, I would take a dim eye on the group - the authority of the church was not condidered important. Would one need his permission to study as a family as well? No, but if we add another couple of families - it is a small group and should be part of the church. The goal is to get people into church, even if I was doing my study for my neighbors, coworkers, et al Steve |

Oh. I thought the "goal" was to tell people about a saving relationship with their Lord and Savior, and to study His Word.

Hello "There", Yes, I agree with you, but Steve had a good point. He merely suggested that he could reach out to others through inviting his neighbors for a Bible study, which I think is a very good idea! Nolan |

6 | Going back to the same old same old... | Bible general Archive 1 | There | 12090
Hi Nolan, Going back to the subject again. Is Steve also saying that we (men and women in the church) need the pastor's permission to "reach out to others through inviting our neighbors for a Bible study"? I think we have THE LORD'S permission to do that. In fact I think we have His command to reach out to others, whether to invite them to a Bible study or to share the gospel in some other way. So I'm going back again and asking the same old same old. Why would a "believer" need any man's permission or blessing to do just that? |

Hello There, Good question.. I'm going to have to side with you on that question, since we do not need any man's approval to start a Bible Study or to go out and witness or pass out tracts. If this is so, then I have violated this many times! :) No, there is no scripture at all that states that we must have someone's permission or blessing to have a Bible Study, even though having a pastor know about it taking place certainly couldn't hurt. We most certainly have the LORD's permission to study His Holy Word on our own! I agree with you on this and disagree with the idea that we need a pastor's "OK" to do this first.. Blessings! Nolan |

Nolan - Reconsider. I have already pointed out that we are authority of the church, citing Scripture. If they say they don't want people to start a Bible study on there own, we must follow. We can always leave. One reason is that there needs to be some training to lead a Bible study ... plus, the person may not have the gift of teaching. Even if I have a Bible study at work - I need permission of my employer. Steve |

Steve, again I disagree.. There is nothing that says that we must have the permission of a 'higher church authority' to have a Bible Study and you will not be able to convince me unless you explicity show me in Scripture that says this, Steve. Therefore, I believe that you are in error here also. Nolan |

Hebrews 13:17 1 Peter 2:13-3:6 and 1 Peter 5:5 are the passages I cited. It does not say specify the Bible study. But, it does talk about submitting to the leaders. ... and this is a minor point, too. |
