1 | Do We Worship On Our Knees Only? | Bible general Archive 1 | jim | 4881
A very interesting question. I have been in church a few years and have wondered where our churches got their mode of worship. I see what is in the Bible and i see none of it in our churche. I have never studied but i can read what took place in the Bible. I reckon man has told God how He will worship. In your view what is difference between worship and praise? Jim

I too have wonder the difference between worship and praise. A short review of the major dictionaries was also of no help indicating that this is a confusing issue. I finally found that worship commonly refers to "bended knee" while praise relates to the word "halelujah". Praise is what happens when you find , as I did recently, that my daughter who has been married for ten years, and has prayed and prayed for a baby , is finally pregnant. That is praise.

Using English dictionaries is sometimes bad. We get our word worship from Middle English worshipe, which means worthiness, respect, reverence paid to a divine being. This word is from Old English, weorthscipe, which means worthiness, respect, from weorth worthy, worth -scipe -ship. There are some that say worship is showing God his worth. To be it sound to close to praise. You have got a good handle on the difference. Congrats to your daughter and praise to the Lord. I think of Hannah who worshiped after she was told she would be with child. There may of been praise as a related, but separate activity. Contrast Job who lost it all, and worshiped, as well as David, who lost his first son by Bathsheba. Worship does not always happen in conjuction with praise. |

What really surprised me is that praise and worship are commonly used together in the church, but when you ask, even the "experts" have difficulty seperating the two. It also seems to me that most of us in our Christian practice are long on worship, but a little short in our praise. |

That depends on your definition of both. I am not sure we do either. I see very few Christians get on their knees. I get on my knees for prayer, one of many positions for prayer. At that time, I am not in worship. The reason I say we do not praise much, is because of what I see on the faces. I am not judging, but wonder why there is so little joy when we praise God. When we praise someone else, we beam ... I am thinking of when I praise my daughter. But, God is our Father ... so why don't we beam when we praise Him? Steve |

Have you ever wondered why Chrisitans go absolutely nuts and act like wild men when their football team scores a winning touchdown. But at the same time can't get too excited about their God. Sometimes I think that they are like Davids wife who criticized him when he danced before the Arc. They find fault with folks when they show too much emotion in church. If there is something or someone worthy of our excitment and praise, it is the Lord!

I agree ... what David did may of been praise. We do need to behave and not cuase offense. It is a fine line. At times, I want to pray in Japanese, but refrain because it could make others think wrong thoughts. I let the Holy Spirit control mine. On the other hand, I think of Daniel 10:7ff, where there may of been worship ... but, the presence of God caused Daniel to faint and others to run away. |
