Personal opinion ... John, Tho I've heard people use the gift, I think the reason the gift of tongues, as well as other gifts, are not used today, is because people do not use the gift(s) God gave them. Searcher |

Searcher- You know I am Pentecostal and I am not saying a person is not Christian nor filled with the Holy Spirit if they don't speak in tongues. But I believe Corinthians states "tongues of men or angels". I have heard of people speaking in tongues and having a person from another country that they have never been to understanding what was being said. I speak in tongues, but I have never felt led to use it publicly and it is not just for display. It is used for my own personal prayer life and if ever a time in history that personal edification was needed, today is just as needful as 1900 years ago. This subject has been gone over and over so many times in the forum. There are those who believe in them, and those who don't and only when the Lord comes, when they aren't needed anymore, will the REAL truth come out! Peace in Christ- Debbie |

Debbie, 1 Cor 13:1 says "tongues of men and of angels" not "tongues of men OR angels". What language did the angels speak ... that people heard? I understand your view, but do not understand why you would wnat to pray in another tongue, since your mind would be unfruitful (1 Cor 14:14) ... This thought just in. Since Paul says "if", could it be he didn't pray in a tongue? This fits with the rest of the chapter; showing a need for an interpeter whenever a tongue is spoken. |

This is my opinion. Paul is really talking about two issues and bringing them together to make a point.Issue 1: praying in the Spirit 2: edification of the body. To edify means simply to build up. Praying in the Spirit does not edify the other members of the church if there is no understanding. Paul also says in 1Cor14:4 He who speaks in a toungue edifies himself. So in some way you edify yourself when you pray to God in toungues but you don't edify the other members of the church because there is no understanding. Now your mind is not edified but you don't always have to understand everything about a gift from God. Abraham didn't fully understand how God would accomplish everything He promised but that is where faith comes in. God bless | ||||||
