Bible Question:
Debbie, 1 Cor 13:1 says "tongues of men and of angels" not "tongues of men OR angels". What language did the angels speak ... that people heard? I understand your view, but do not understand why you would wnat to pray in another tongue, since your mind would be unfruitful (1 Cor 14:14) ... This thought just in. Since Paul says "if", could it be he didn't pray in a tongue? This fits with the rest of the chapter; showing a need for an interpeter whenever a tongue is spoken. |
Bible Answer: This is my opinion. Paul is really talking about two issues and bringing them together to make a point.Issue 1: praying in the Spirit 2: edification of the body. To edify means simply to build up. Praying in the Spirit does not edify the other members of the church if there is no understanding. Paul also says in 1Cor14:4 He who speaks in a toungue edifies himself. So in some way you edify yourself when you pray to God in toungues but you don't edify the other members of the church because there is no understanding. Now your mind is not edified but you don't always have to understand everything about a gift from God. Abraham didn't fully understand how God would accomplish everything He promised but that is where faith comes in. God bless |
