I will give you Scripture and keep it real simple. The word believe in just the book of John, in one form or the other, is used ninety two times; in the Koine Greek of the New Testament it is the word PISTEUO. To execute the full meaning of the word PISTEUO, as believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, as used in the English language, one must have a one hundred percent trust in the person of Christ and that doesn't mean sharing even one percent with anything else, even a rock. Did you ever read in Proverbs where it says, trust in the Lord with part of your heart and trust in a rock for the rest, or something to that effect. Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. The only time one is to believe in a rock is when that rock is a reference to the Lord Himself. Psalm 18:2 The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. The word believe, is a transitive verb which requires a subject and an object, the credit goes to the object not the subject i.e. the object of believe must always be the Lord Jesus Christ or the Word of God. The strongest faith in the world is no better then the object of that faith! I don't mean to ruffle your, excuse the pun, feathers. CDBJ |

I take it from the way that your question is worded that your friend has not had a personal relationship with the risen living Lord. The only thing that your friend can understand about the Bible, and that by the working of the Holy Spirit is the Gospel. I think Paul gave us the example in 1 Cor. 2:2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. John backs this up with the reason for writing the gospel that is named after him. John 20:30-31 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: 31But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. There are literally hundreds of thousand of people in churches allover the World that don't believe in Jesus Christ the way that the Bible says one must do in order to be saved. The only thing that any of us can do is explain Jesus to them and pray that God the Father will make Him known to them. A mortal being cannot cause another human to have a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ; all we can do is give them the Word. 1 Cor. 3:6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. Further proof of this is mentioned by Christ in Matthew. Matthew 16:13-17 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? 14And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. 15He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? 16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. All I can say is learn all you can about Jesus and present Him, for God has promised in Isaiah 55. Isaiah 55:10-11 For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: 11So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. I hope this helps, CDBJ |
