1 | Is it a sin to committ suicide? | Bible general Archive 1 | prayon | 2322
Although I have no scripture backing on this (and I would love to know some scriptures if any one can supply them) I do not believe that it is a sin to commit suicide. I look at it this way; The majority of people who commit suicide do it because they are depressed. Depression whether, chronic or acute, is a disease. This disease has complications just as diabetes, lung cancer or any other disease does. One of the complications is suicide. I do not believe that anyone who succombs to depression and commits suicide would be condemned anymore than someone who lost a leg with diabetes or someone who lost a lung bcause of cancer.

Although I don't have an exact scriptural reference saying that "suicide is wrong", my thinking is 1 Corinthians 10:13 tells me that suicide is a sin. "NO temptation (taking one's life falls under that category) has seized you except what is common to man." That tells me right there that whatever you may be going through (depression, sickness, fear, whatever) has already happened to someone else, no matter how you slice it. By committing suicide, you are basically telling God, "Not even YOU can handle this, not even YOU can save me", when it's totally untrue. In fact, Jesus went through just about everything we've gone through, and everything we have yet to go through. I consider suicide a total and complete lack of faith, a guarantee that Satan pulls another one of us down with him. What I'm seeing in this world today is more and more people killing others, and in an attempt to get away, they kill themselves, not realizing that this basically sends them on a one-way ticket to that eternal burning sensation we call Hell. If you know Jesus, then suicide isn't even an option. |

Dear KBurgee, Thank you for your reply and feelings. I agree in part - when it comes to people who are running as you stated at the end. I would like to give you a small personal testimony. I suffer from the disease of depression. It was diagnosed over 10 years ago and it comes from a chemical imbalance. It is my prayer that someday God will heal me from this disease but until then I will remain on medication. There were times even while on medication that I have been suicidal. During these times my faith remained very strong. I had no doubt in my mind whatsoever that God could not handle my situation. I became suicidal because I felt that I did not have the strength, energy or desire to go on until He did. It is this overwhelming feeling that leads to suicide NOT that God can't handle it. I have found a site that I pray that all Christian leaders, ministers, and counselors will find and explore. I encourage you to go to: www.gospelcom.net/cdp . With the best intentions many of these people do much more harm than good to a person suffering from depression. In Christ's Love, prayon |

Dear prayon: I want you to note that you are not alone. There are others at this website who suffer from and are being treated for clinical depression. Remember God is a million times fairer and more understanding than the best intentioned human could ever be. Unfortunately, many Christians, including some pastors, absolutely do not have any understanding of depression. Some try to label depression as a sin. Or they say that if you had enough faith, you could be healed of it. To this I reply, no responsible person would tell a diabetic to have faith and quit taking his insulin, would he? In the same way, it would be very foolish and irresponsible to counsel a person diagnosed with clinical depression to have faith and stop taking his prescription medications. Dropping one's medications often is the direct cause of the patient's suicide or suicide attempt. Thank you for having the courage to openly discuss your condition. It is commendable that your faith remained unshaken even when you were feeling suicidal.
