Greetings Sir! The problem is that the Bible is written in a language, with words that have meanings and rules of grammar that must be followed. What one person might say is explaining away a passage, another might say is interpreting it correctly. It is easier to use specific examples than to speak in general. However, I am all in favor of taking the Bible in the way that it was intended. However, to do that, one must know what a word means. One must know the subject of the sentence. One must know the object of the sentence. These are the kinds of things I was referring to in my last post. If you have a specific passage in mind, maybe we could discuss it? I am not referring to any specific passage, but rather to an overall philosophy of interpreting scripture. You make the correct point that anytime ideas are put into words, there are rules regarding how they are to be written and read (grammar, etc.). My point is that these things are very basic, and able to be easily understood by the general population. I have a fundamental believe that the Bible is God's Word, and as such, He is responsible for keeping it accurate and understandable. Therefore, through all the translations, and changes in culture, I believe that God has caused His Word to transcend these things. I also believe that God gave the Bible to humanity at large, and not to small groups of the highly educated (to interpret for the masses). I have found in the past, that knowledge of certain cultural customs, or ancient language information has helped me to see some interesting points. However, I believe this knowledge to be unnecessary for understanding of the Bible. The vast majority of people have not had this information, and I don't think that God would so limit His audience. |

Greetings Sir! We would seem to have similar beliefs about Scripture then! I too believe God has preserved and protected it. My concern that one can take one of two extremes when it comes to interpretation. 1) One can say that interpretation is impossible and that anything can mean anything. At which point, Scripture becomes meaningless. 2) Or, one can say that interpretation is simply a matter of plugging in definitions to words and woodenly following that view. At which point, Scripture becomes meaningless. Personally, I am an inerrantist when it comes to Scripture. I believe that every word of Scripture is exactly the word that God intended. Culture, customs, and languages are simply tools to help us understand those words. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
