Dear Scribe: I agree with most of your post. However, I believe that eternal life is exactly that, "eternal". We have many promises in scripture which teach us that when we as a lost sinner are brought to Christ by the Holy Spirit, that when we rest, believe, or trust in him "we have everlasting life" We are born from above and indwelt or sealed by the Spirit of promise. Your question regarding the security of a professing Christian who carries on in serious moral sin without out apparent guilt of repentance would suggest to me that he does not have the Spirit of God dwelling in him. As you have stated we can fall into sin, but if we are born from above we cannot rest there. The point which you have made between the accidental sin of a Christian and the wilful sin of a Christian pose an important point. A Christian who is indwelt by the Spirit of God will produce certain fruit in their lives. If indeed their lives are addicted to sin, we would question the reality of their Christian profession. Do you not think that when we are saved: a) we are forgiven and delivered from the penalty of sin. b) That by his Spirit God gives us power to be preserved daily from sin. d) That eventually, we will be delivered from the presence of sin when Christ comes.
