1 | Why did Jesus Go to Hell | 1 Pet 3:19 | Searcher56 | 109500
Did Christ go to these spirits in prison while He was in the tomb for the 3 days ... or could it be that He preached as the preincarante Christ? I believe the latter. I also think the "spirits (now) in prison, who once were disobedient" (vv 19b-20a) were the seven others with Noah. Remember Noah was the only righteous (Gen 6:9, 7:1) ... I think the others were disobedient before the flood. I am not sure work in them (or anyone) being in prison. |

I believe Jesus preached to the pre-flood population through Noah and now those disobedient people are in Sheol(2nd Peter 2:4,5). The unrighteous cannot be saved after death(Luke 16:26). Jesus never preached and teached to the physically dead(Luke 9:60).
3 | Why did Jesus Go to Hell | 1 Pet 3:19 | EdB | 109511
Jesus did preach to the those awaiting the Messiah in Sheol. Remember before the death and resurrection of Jesus, Sheol held both the righteous and unrighteous dead. The righteous were waiting for their Messiah to lead them to Heaven and the unrighteous still await judgement with their final destination the Lake of Fire. The people Jesus preached too, didn't get a second chance they were Old Testament saints that had died righteous believing in the promise of the Messiah. Jesus paid for their sins along with ours. He went to Sheol and preached the Good News to these saints 1 Peter 3:19 and lead captivity captive to heaven Eph 4:8 EdB |

What was the need to preach? Would it mean that they would change sides ... David and Ahab?

Change sides? No we are only given a whole life time to make our decision. Jesus preached He was the Messiah that God had promised and faithfully furnished. These men died looking for the Messiah, depending on the Messiah to provide their righteousness. Jesus proclaimed He was the One and had the victory and lead them home. It was a victory celebration rather than a salvation service. EdB |
