1 | Loving God with Heart vs Soul | Deut 6:5 | JJO | 64324
I'm going to teach a SS lesson on the greatest commandment (Mark 12:30) and I wanted to hear others thoughts on loving God with HEART and SOUL. That is, the two seem closely related and like to hear what others say distinguishes the two from each other. That is, Heart vs Soul characteristics. Any thoughts? Thanks. |

Hello, JJO. The quote in Mark 12:30 (see also Matt. 22:37) is part of the Shema (Heb. 'hear') of Deut. 6:4,5). The idea is to underscore the completeness of the kind of love God expects of His people. The usage of the various terms such as heart, soul, mind, and strength emphasize, stress, and serve to illustrate the extent of complete love and total commitment that God's people are to have for Him. "With singleness of heart" [Acts 2:46], a good King James Bible phrase that describes the manner of life of the post-Pentecost Christians, is no less appropriate to the manner in which we should love God. To use another good Bible phrase, we are not to be "double-minded", lacking wisdom and harboring doubts, "For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways." [James 1:7,8]. And another, "No one can serve two masters...You cannot serve God and wealth." [Matt.6:24). When Jesus called His disciples, He never offered them a part-time job! --Hank

Thanks Hank. In the case of elaboration, I like the Amplified version of Deuteronomy 6:5 'with your entire being'. Your answer also reminds me of the teaching of old wineskins and new pieces of garment, e.g. you don't just put a 'patch' of Christianiy on, or adjust the 'old' wineskin; rather, you go 'new' and 'full' all the way, or full-time as you state. Interesting, as is the case with many of my lessons, God slows me down. That is, I was going to lead a study on the full verse and all four variables (heart, soul, mind, and strength). Long story, short, tomorrow we will just cover why we should love God, and just the attribute of loving Him with soul (found numerous wonderful models from the Psalms in terms of reference to the soul and devotion to God). Will cover heart, strength and mind next time, or two! |
