1 | Why change order of commandments? | Deut 5:21 | Norrie | 32236 | ||
Question to Catholics. I just found a Cath Bible site. I read Ex 20 and the 10 Commandments are in there just like they are in every other Bible. I was raised Cath. I was taught the 10 commandments are 1. I am the Lord thy God, you shall have no other Gods before me. 2. Do not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. 3. Keep holy the sabbath day. 4. Honor thy mother and father. 5. Thou shall not kill. 6. Thou shall not commit adultery. 7. Thou shall not steal. 8. Thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor. 9. Thou shall not covet they neighbor's wife. 10. Thou shall not covet thy neighbor's goods. Why do they leave out the graven image commandment and break the covet commandment in two? It's all right there in the Bible, why do they change it? |

Norrie, Please look at Deut 5:6-21. "No other God's before me" would include gaven images that are worshiped. It would also include any pictures that are worshiped. Most Prostestants shy away from stautes but many have pictures of Jesus of one kind or another in their homes or books. They do not worship them any more than Catholics worship statues or all Americans worship the statues of our American heroes found in public places. The division of the coveting our neighbor's wife or goods is seen in verse 21. Keep in mind that the verse divisions and punctuation are artificial and do not exist in the original languages or manuscripts. So the division of the first and second or the ninth and tenth is arbitrary on either side. The division between a neighbor's wife and his property seesm rather logical to many people. I tend to view and value my wife much more highly than my posessions. You will note that both lists when taught as catechism are edited. Protestants tend toward the Exodus list version and Catholics the Deuteronomy, but both edit to abbreviate for teaching purposes. As an example look at the commandment on honoring the Sabbath. Whether you count it as fourth or third, both Protestants and Catholics teach it in an abbreviated form for lessons. Emmaus |

Um...both Exodus and Deuteronomy both contain the prohibition against idols: "You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me. --Exodus 2:3-5 "You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me" --Deuteronomy 5:7-9 Where is there any difference between the so-called "Exodus" version and the so-called "Deuteronomy" version? Seems that I am seeing double here... Another interesting way to settle this disagreement would be to see what the Jewish tradition considers to be the Decalogue. And Catholics do indeed use statues as objects of their veneration. No, I am not saying that anyone thinks that the statue of Mary in the cathedral is really Mary, but the Hindus do not really believe that the statue of Vishnu in their temples is really Vishnu, either. --Joe! |

Joe, My point about the lists used by Protestants and Catholics for Sunday school are that they are both edited for teaching and memorization purposes. And in Deuteronomy you will note that wife is before the posessions, but in Exodus 20:17 the wife is in the middle of the posessessions, so the division there is not as logical as in Deut 5:21. Do you think the Jews venerated the Ark? "You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. " How about those angels on the Ark Ex 25:18-20 and the tapestry 26:1 and 1 Kings 6:23-28? How about the brass serpent Num 21:9 and those 1 Kings 7:29 and 1 King 7:36 and 2 Chronicles 4:4? Who told Solomon to add those oxen? How about photos of our deceased loved ones? Do you own any books with illustrations of God, Jesus or the saints? Is one perhaps a Bible? Did the Jews or are you violating the commandment in any of these ways? Or is veneration different from idolatry? Or was God confused giving contradictory orders? "You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth." Joe, You have already accused me of idolatry directly. Why dance around by implication now? Hindus are not Christians, Catholics are. Of course you may disagree. But the Catholic creed makes it explicit that they do not worship more than one God nor worship statues. Hindus are polytheists. Emmaus |

Are you a catholic? Ex 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Ex 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Ex 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; When God said "any graven image, He also said not to bow to them nor serve them" I agree to those you mention i.e the quirubim, the brass serpent, etc. the question do they serve them? Do the israel pray for them? are they put flowers to it and go to the streets and recite the rosary for those images. Do they kiss those images put the handcarechiefs and smell it to believed that it will heal thier illness. The order is very clear. "Dont serve them and bow to them" Moses made those serpent simply following the commandments of God, If you are in the situation of moses are you going to follow or not? how about the catholics? is there any passages in the bible that will state that "please make an image of Mary and pray to them and you will be closer to Jesus Christ". can you show me that. Making an images today is simply a doctrine of the people but not by the bible, they just do it because they want to but not the God asking them to do it for Him. Here in our country, History tells that before the catholics arrives there are images that worshipped by our pagan people. They worship one of the ANITO that can make women fertile if it is hard to them to have a child. When the catholic arrives here they just adopt that kind of practice and put different "IMAGES" STA ClARA the practice is the same you have to dance in the front of this images and it will help you to have a child. And they called it christian practice! WOW christianize pagan believed? I am not criticizing your believed if you are a catholic, please answers my point. |

The pope started out okay, then he told a lie and other "stuff" followed... too bad people believe the lie though. Date: 2001-11-25 Papal Address Before the Angelus "Paradoxical" Power of Christ Has No Place in Earthly Logic, Pope Says VATICAN CITY, NOV. 25, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Here is a translation of John Paul II´s address in St. Peter´s Square today, at the end of the canonization of four new saints and before the praying of the midday Angelus. * * * Dearest Brothers and Sisters! 1. This Sunday, the last of the liturgical year, the solemnity of Christ the King of the universe, is celebrated, and the Church invites us to contemplate the royalty of the Redeemer, which is reflected with particular eloquence in the lives of the saints. This morning, in St. Peter´s Basilica, I had the joy of proclaiming four new [saints]: Bishop Giuseppe Marello of Acqui, founder of the Congregation of Oblates of St. Joseph; and three consecrated virgins: Paula Montal Fornés of St. Joseph Calasanz, Leonie Françoise de Sales Aviat, and Maria Crescentia Höss. Their witness shows that the Crucified really "lives and reigns forever." Yes, he is "the living one," "the Lord," and he reigns in the lives of men and women of every place and time, who accept him freely and follow him faithfully. His Kingdom, a "kingdom of justice, love and peace" (Preface) will only be manifested, however, at the end of time. 2. Compared to the criteria of this world, the royalty of Jesus seems to be, so to speak, "paradoxical." In fact, the power that it exercises has no place in earthly logic. It is, on the contrary, the power of love and service, which requires the free gift of self and consistent witness to truth (John 18:37). For this reason, the Lord sacrificed himself as an "immaculate victim of peace on the altar of the Cross" (Preface), knowing that only thus could he rescue humanity, history and the cosmos from the slavery of sin and death. His resurrection attests that he is the victorious King, the "Lord" in heaven, on earth, and under the earth (see Philippians 2:10-11). 3. The creature who more than any other was associated with Christ was Mary, whom he himself crowned Queen of heaven and earth. The saints, whom the Church today presents to us for our veneration, looked to her as their constant model. We also look to her, so that she will help us to "reign" with Christ to build a world where peace "reigns." We must pray ceaselessly to obtain this great gift, which is peace, a gift of which humanity is in such great need. We will invoke it confidently, including with the two initiatives that I announced last Sunday: the day of fasting in December, and the January prayer meeting in Assisi with the representatives of the world´s religions. May Mary, Queen of Peace, intercede for us before her divine Son, immortal King and Lord of peace. [Translation by ZENIT] |
