1 | God has the right, but why do it? | Deut 29:29 | Lionstrong | 13879
Dear Sir Pent, Yes, the “Story” is real, but the divine Author did what is impossible for the human: he’s “written” himself in as one, no Three, of the characters. He hasn’t written the book, enjoyed the reading of it and then laid it down to go and do other things. Have you ever noticed how intimate and personal the Triune God of the Bible is? In the Garden he walked with man in the cool of the day. He was the friend of Abraham. He wrestled with Jacob and was the “fear of Isaac.” He called David a man after his own heart. And he knows the number of hairs on our heads. This Writer does not stand aloof, but he IS the sovereign Author, and it IS his story. He, in the Person of his Son, is “touched with the feeling of our infirmities.” He took on humanity and suffered horribly in the place of his people. A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. Yes, the “Story” is real; full of unspeakable horrors, but the divine Author does not stand aloof. For the rest of eternity the Son will have the proof of his part in this story in his hands, feet and side. What role has he written for you and me? We’ll only be able to look back and see what it specifically was. But we do have a purpose: to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, strength and mind and our neighbor as our selves. And to KNOW the one for whom to know means eternal life. John 17: 3. In the mean time, we have his Word to tell us how to walk and to give us hope. Rom. 15:4 For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. 1 Cor. 2:9 but just as it is written, "THINGS WHICH EYE HAS NOT SEEN AND EAR HAS NOT HEARD, AND which HAVE NOT ENTERED THE HEART OF MAN, ALL THAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM." Continue to wrestle. Peace, Lionstrong |

2 | What's God's purpose in life? | Deut 29:29 | Sir Pent | 13935
Once again, I must wholeheartedly agree with my fellow believers. You have both done an excellent job of articulating two very important characteristics of God. Namely His "transcendance" (focused on by Debbie), and his "imminence" (focused on by Lionstrong). I also appreciate and agree with your suggestions about OUR purpose in life. At the same time, I would still appreciate more input as to ideas about what God's purpose is. As a follower of Christ, I strive to understand God as much as possible. I feel therefore, that discovering His motivations, can help us immensly. Any more ideas? |

3 | What's God's purpose in life? | Deut 29:29 | Searcher56 | 13937
Romans 8:28-30 (NASB) says (28) "God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." (29) "For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;" (30) "and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified." He is the Director in these verses and a whole lot more. Study this passage and let the words melt in your mouth. Steve |

4 | Perhaps we found God's purpose in life | Deut 29:29 | Sir Pent | 13946
Welcome to the discussion Steve, That is an interesting point that you bring up. I read Romans chapter 8 again, keeping this idea in mind, and it would seem to say that God's purpose is to bring about good for the people who love him. Based on that interpretation, then God created the universe becuase if there were no universe, there would be no people to love Him, and He would not be able to bring about good for them. What does everyone think? Is this the answer? |

5 | Perhaps we found God's purpose in life | Deut 29:29 | vkey | 14202
hi Pent! from what i have come to understand, God did not create the universe and all of us because he ws feeling lonely or he wanted someone to love Him. all of his creations until man, showed His power and wisdom. but to show His everlasting love, He created man. so it was not he created man so that man could love him but so the He can love man and to show the extent he'll go to love him by sacrificing His only begotten Son. this may be only half true but as the above verse Deuteronomy says "the secret things belong to the Lord our God", so only He knows the full reason. |

6 | Did God make mankind to show His love? | Deut 29:29 | Sir Pent | 14261
So if I interpret correctly, Lionstrong feels that discovering God's purposes and motivation is irrelevant and doesn't really matter, because after all He is God. vkey, agrees with the idea that Steve tipped me off to, that God's motivation is to love mankind, therefore creating so that there is a mankind to love. Are there any other thoughts on this?
7 | Did God make mankind to show His love? | Deut 29:29 | Pemican | 14291
The short answer to this is that God created mankind to resolve the angelic conflict, (a very lengthy subject). God's motivation and purpose is never irrelevant. Knowing why we exist, seeing the big picture, helps us to put our lives in perspective, and know that we are not irrelevant either. After man was created and fell, God was motivated by his love to save mankind. But God's righteousness and justice had to be satisfied, so sin was judged in Christ on the cross. People always want to emphasis the love of God but God's love does not function independently of the other characteristics of His essence. Justice and righteousness must be satisfied as well. It is only because they were satisfied that we can have a relationship with God at all, apart from being the subjects of condemnation and judgment. A part of God's essence is His immutability, or unchangeableness, which guarantees consistency in the function of His essence and character. In His Grace, Pemican |
