1 | Is there "speaking in tongues" mentioned | James 3:8 | Morant61 | 148283 | ||
Greetings Steve! That is interesting! Did they know Japanese? Were they just faking it? Or, were they being influced by the 'other side'? It is not all together clear that 1 Cor. 12:1-3 is speaking of tongues, but there are two possible views. 1) One says that this passage is speaking of people denouncing Christ under persecution. Paul would then be saying that no real Christian could ever denounce Christ by cursing Him. 2) The second is that there were false 'tongue speakers' at Cornith and that Paul was setting up a standard by which such 'speaking' gifts could be judged. But, this subject of 'fake' speakers is another area of speculation. Paul nevers uses any language that would indicate that there were fake speakers. There may have been or there may have not been! :-) Abuse of the gift was definitly going on since Paul felt necessary to regulate the use of the gift. I would agree with your last statement my friend. Over the years, I have developed a little different approach concerning 'gifts'. I prefer not to use the term 'have' a gift. I believe that 1 Cor. 12:7 indicates that 'gifts' are dispersed as needed, not as possessions. If a 'tongue' is needed, God gives it. If wisdom is needed, God gives it. If healing is needed, God gives it. I like to view Spiritual gifts as weapons on a weapon rack that are handed out depending upon the kind of battle in which we are currently engaged. All of the gifts are necessary, but some more some at particular times than others. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Tim. I don't think they knew Japanese. I asked them "Anata no namai wa nun desu ka?" ... What is your name? ... They looked at me with a strange look. I believe you know that the temples in Corinth also spoke in tongues. I haven't studied chapter 14 enough to prove the when Pual used the singular tongue, he meant the fakers and when He used the plural tongues, it was about the spiritual gift. I do agree with ... If a 'tongue' is needed, GOD GIVES IT - as with the other gifts. But, to certain people. For you, it is preaching, which is needed often. When I have heard some who didn't have the gift - I wondered if anyone there had the gift and didn't exercise it. I have the gifts of teaching, administration and discernment. The latter dosen't kick in too often, and I wish I didn't always have it. It has caused "problems" or maybe it was just fear. Steve |

Greetings Steve! I know that there is supposed to be some historical evidence that temples around Cornith engaged in some sorts of 'estatic' utterances, but even it true, it is impossible to directly relate the two! :-) In my opinion, the plural/singular question is easy to prove false. Look at 1 Cor. 14:26! Paul lists the 'singular' glossa as something that must be done for the strenthening of the church. Would he say this of a fake gift? Further, in 14:23, it is the 'plural' glossa which prompts unbelievers to say that those speaking are out of their minds! ;-) Whatever our take on tongues today, Paul definitely 'de-valued' them from the position with which they were held by the Corinthians. :-) p.s. - How did you learn Japanese my friend? Tim, I learned Japanese as a first-and-a-half language. I went to Japan when I was four, and to play with the neighbor children, I chose to learn it from them ... and my parents who went to language school. Since it has been 39 years since we left, I have forgotten most of it. The points you made make me discount the singular-plural view. Steve PS I have a question posted on given (didomi). |
