1 | Need Clarification on Asking/Receiving | James 1:6 | Godsstudent | 205250
I'm confused about James 1:6-8 which reads; "But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways". This confuses me because in verse 6 we're told to ask for things in faith without doubting. I know it doesn't "specifically" say we'll receive it, but it does elude to this otherwise what's the purpose? Also, in other parts of the Bible we're taught "ask and yea shall receive". But in verse 7 it says not to expect anything from the Lord and this has me a bit confused, it just seems a bit contradictory to me and I could use some clarification. |

2 | Need Clarification on Asking/Receiving | James 1:6 | Morant61 | 205251
Greetings Student! Verse 7 refers to the man who doubts. The one who doubts should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Everyone else should expect to ask and receive. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

3 | Need Clarification on Asking/Receiving | James 1:6 | Val | 205253
Dear Pastor Tim, do you think the doubts means that he doubts he will get an answer or he doubts who God is since down further in the chapter it says "he is unstable in all his ways" and later refers to those who may confess Christ or give Him lip service but are not "doers of the word". Thanks, Val
4 | Need Clarification on Asking/Receiving | James 1:6 | Morant61 | 205257
Greetings Val! The word for 'doubt' is a word that means 'to judge' or 'to discriminate'. In this passage, it seems to have the meaning of a 'divided judgment'. The person asking God is of a wavering opinion in his request. So, I would say that doubt here refers to doubt about the response to the prayer from God. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
