1 | Wisdom - Salvation in Christ? | James 1:5 | Mommapbs | 121048 | ||
Might James be addressing unbelievers here? After quite a study on the wisdom of God, it seems possible that the wisdom he notes is referencing salvation. See Job 28: 12-28; Prov 9:10; 1 Cor 1:18-31 and "you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus." 2 Tim 3:15 |

Mommapbs That is an interesting thought. Here is John MacArthur's view of this text. I find it stands better in the light of all scripture. “1:5 wisdom. James’ Jewish audience recognized this as the understanding and practical skill that was necessary to live life to God’s glory. It was not a wisdom of philosophical speculation, but the wisdom contained in the pure and peaceable absolutes of God’s will revealed in His Word (cf. 3:13,17) and lived out. Only such divine wisdom enables believers to be joyous and submissive in the trials of life. ask of God. This command is a necessary part of the believer’s prayer life (cf. Job 28:12–23; Prov. 3:5–7; 1 Thess. 5:17). God intends that trials will drive believers to greater dependency on Him, by showing them their own inadequacy. As with all His riches (Eph. 1:7; 2:7; 3:8; Phil. 4:19), God has wisdom in abundance (Rom. 11:33) available for those who seek it." MacArthur, J. J. (1997, c1997). Greetings EdB! You wrote: "God intends that trials will drive believers to greater dependency on Him, by showing them their own inadequacy." Do you think that God may uses the "trial" that accompanies unconfessed sin in the life of a believer to show them their own inadequacy? Is unbelief a sin that believers struggle with in certain ares of their lives? - (James reminds us that when we ask God for wisdom, we are to ask in faith, not doubting! v6). I think there is much more to the wisdom of God than we understand and as such, we don't even realize that we aren't depending upon it (or in other words, we lack it). Just some thinking . . . mommapbs First I did not write that it was quote from John MacArthur. Yes I think God uses the results, consequences or trials as you called them of our sin confessed or unconfessed to teach us truths we need to learn. Unbelief is a trial we all experience at times in times of our life. When we are given serious bad news usually it causes us to question nearly everything. However I think how we handle that doubt depends on whether we really trust God or are double minded. I once knew a man that was diagnosed with cancer. The really sad part of this story is that at his age the cancer could have been controlled and he would be able to live out the rest of days of his life with little or no complications. He refused all effort to control his cancer. His testimony was he was healed. However a week later I heard him testify that the barley green he was drinking was overcoming the cancer. To me that was double minded. I know he was rush at least once to the hospital in unbearable pain from the cancer that he would have never had to experience had he simply followed his doctors orders. I’m not sure he learned anything from that but I did. I learned God will not share his glory with anyone or even Barley Green. I also learned that if medical science has something to offer we should take advantage of it. God can still heal us while we are taking medication to control our disease. I also learned not to be so bull headed as to put myself into painful situations when God provides a way around it. EdB |
