1 | Inmature babes unskilled in righteusness | Heb 6:4 | cloud | 97656 | ||
To understand Hebrews 6:1-6 you have to back up to Hebrews 5:12-14. The writer says here that Christians that need to be reminded of the first principles of the orcles of God are inmuture babies and still need milk because they are UNSKILLED IN THE WORD OF RIGHTEOUSNESS. According to Romans 10:1-4 a person can have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. According to v.3 you can be IGNORANT OF GOD'S RIGHTEOUSNESS and be seeking your own. Our righteousness is like filthy rags. You need to submit to God's righteousness which is clearly a gift. Romans 9:30-33 says that the Gentiles obtained righteousness simply by faith, but the religous people miss it. To the religous mind the truth that we are freely justified is a stumbling stone. To the religous mind Jesus is a stumbling Stone, a Rock of offence. Be carefull not to stump your tow. The writer of Hebrews is saying in v. 6:1-6 you have already laid the foundation now MOVE ON TO MUTURTY. REPENT FROM DEAD WORKS. Dead works means striving to obtain your own righteousness. Dead works are the deeds of the law by which no flesh shall be justified. Submit to the righteousness of God by faith. You have already laid the foundation. Settle the issue of righteousness and move on to muturity. |

I must admit, this scripture, Heb 6:4 has always been perplexing to me as a christian but it does seem to go counter to the guidance given by Peter in 2 Pet 2, as follows: 19They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity--for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him. 20If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. 21It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. 22Of them the proverbs are true: "A dog returns to its vomit," and, "A sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud." Again, I need to emphasize I'm fuzzy on the correct interpretation of Heb 6:4 and will ask Jesus when I get to Heaven but I gotta say that Peter's words are very plain and simple and very graphic. I don't see how these words could be confused so I'll let them speak for themselves. Two small items I would offer to those reading. When you're considering where you're going to be spending eternity, would you rather be absolutely certain of your membership in God's family or would you like to take a chance on the fuzzy interpretation of a somewhat questionable scripture, written by one of the most advanced minds whoever lived. Look again at 1 Cor 9:27 and remember it was most probably written by the same author as Hebrews. |
