1 | Is the 7th "day" still going on? | Heb 4:6 | james210 | 132071 | ||
Exodus 20:8-11 (KJV) says: "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it." God said that he 'rested' on the seventh day. He did not say that he 'rests' on the seventh day. Many argue that the days in Genesis 1:1 were long periods of time, not literal days, and that right now we're in the seventh period of time. Here, God Himself is saying that he was giving us an example on how we should live our lives. He didn't say that he did it in long periods of time and that we should do it in days. He said what He did (in days), we should do (in days). Moses gave this Commandment to Israel and they followed it. If God meant long periods of time, he would have rebuked Israel for not understanding the Commandment. Indeed, if God is resting right now, that means He is not doing anything at all, but we know that He certainly worked when He died on the cross. Although God ceased from the work of creation (Heb 4:10), that doesn't mean he didn't work on something else afterward His rest. He destroyed the world with water, gave the Law to Moses, gave visions to prophets, sent His Son, died, resurected His Son, and then sent His Spirit to us all after this. I believe the rest that the author of Hebrews is referring to, is the rest from striving to earn our salvation. Once we are saved, we cease from our own works (Heb 4:3,10), and then work for God. |

I agree God rested, not completely, but from his creative works. I won't get into what works we are to rest from, but only say that works are required, just not the fleshly works we might choose, but rather, those that Christ commanded.(Acts 26:20; 2 Cor 7:11) We both agree that the fact of creation is clearly stated in the Bible. But is 144 hours of creation occurring some 6,000 years ago in harmony with scientific evidence found in astronomy, physics, chemistry, geology and biology? There's been some embarrassing moments in history when taking the Bible literally in the wrong places has stumbled many. Could this be another regrettable one? |

Greetings AlienResident! There have also been some embarrassing moments in history when scientists thought that their theories were fool proof! ;-) I really don't care if the scientists agree with Genesis or not. God doesn't have to theorize about what may have heppened and when! He was there! ;-) I'm not trying to convice you of a set view my friend. I just want to remind you that the 'dates' are science are theory, not fact. They could be right, but they could also be wrong. I'm simply not going to change my understanding of Scripture everytime some scientist proposes a new 'theory'. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
