"My message is a message of hope that God is a good God, and that no matter what we've done, where we've been, God has a great plan for our lives… Most people already know what they're doing wrong. And for me to get in here and just beat 'em down and talk down to 'em, I just don't think that inspires anybody to rise higher. But I want to motivate." --Joel Osteen Compare with... "If you preach a sermon that would be acceptable to the member of a Jewish synagogue or to a Unitarian congregation, there is something radically wrong with it. Preaching, when truly Christian, is distinctive. And what makes it distinctive is the all-pervading presence of a saving and sanctifying Christ. Jesus Christ must be at the heart of every sermon you preach." --Jay E. Adams |

Hi Doc, A BIG amen to that! It is truly amazing that "motivational words" are accepted and pass for the Word of God. They are a cheap substitute! Paul says: "and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God" (1 Cor. 2:3-4 NASB) As I've said before if Heb 4:12 is true-"... the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart'- then pray tell how mere human wisdom can change the heart and mind? Thanks for sharing. BradK |
