did theologians understand the biblical concept of the number seven prior to the 1800's? a teacher friend of mine has suggested to me that the biblical concept of sevens was first discovered in the bible by the occultist helena blavatsky in her book called 'the secret doctrine' which was authored in the 1800's, and that theologians of today merely followed her lead in the understanding of the concept of the number seven. did theologians understand the biblical concept of the number seven prior to the 1800's? |

Hello vncnt blzn, Interesting question, my friend. Just so I understand, can you clarify what exactly is "the biblical concept of the number seven"? I'm not aware it's even a significant doctrine! Two things in response: 1. Who is this teacher friend of yours and where are they getting their information? No, Orthodox Evangelical theologian is following anything of "her lead"; 2. I assure you, Helena Blavatsky did not "discover" the biblical concept of sevens- whatever that means! The only thing she ultimately discovered, was that there is a God and there is a payment due for the wages of sin! (Rom. 6:23); Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

hi BradK - "Two things in response: 1. Who is this teacher friend of yours and where are they getting their information?" he is a teacher at the Theosophical Society of America and he's getting his information from published theosophists. "2. I assure you, Helena Blavatsky did not "discover" the biblical concept of sevens- whatever that means!" i've heard that the biblical references to the number seven refer to the concept of 'completeness'. for example, the seven days of creation or the seven trumpets of judgment. |

4 | when did theologians understand 7's? | 2 Tim 2:15 | BradK | 222723 | ||
Hello vncnt blzn, Thanks for your reply. Since your friend is "a teacher at the Theosophical Society of America", that explains a lot! Theosophists are basically Mystics- whose object is knowledge, and with whom the organ of communication with God, is the reason. As Hodge notes, "The Theosophist is one who gives a theory of God, or of the works of God, which has not reason, but an inspiration of his own for its basis.” “The Theosophists, neither contented with the natural light of reason, nor with the simple doctrines of Scripture understood in their literal sense, have recourse to an internal supernatural light superior to all other illuminations, from which they profess to derive a mysterious and divine philosophy." So, you are getting information from someone who denies the sufficiency and auhtority of the Bible as the Word of God! Regarding the number seven, it can often denote perfection- or completeness! It is used frequently in Scripture, such as Gen. 2:2, "By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done." (NASB) I'm not sure how this contradicts Blavatsky's understanding nor where she thinks theologians lacked in their understanding of the number 7? Might I ask why this is so important to understand? BradK - "I'm not sure how this contradicts Blavatsky's understanding nor where she thinks theologians lacked in their understanding of the number 7?" it's the assertion of theosophical authors (according to my friend) that blavatsky was the first to discover the principle of completeness regarding the number seven since the bible was written. this wasn't blavatsky's own assertion, however. "Might I ask why this is so important to understand?" my friend wants me to directly quote any authors who lived prior to blavatsky's time (1800's) who claim to have discerned the principle of sevens within the bible, lest blavatsky get the credit for being the first in recent centuries to discern it. |

vnctvblzn: Great question, I too agree with Brad. Is this a Christian school you are attending? I think you could say Moses understood the completeness in the number seven. I doubt this would fly with your teacher. Maybe others can help you better soon. Blessings. justme |
