1 | Should this be used to correct a widow? | 1 Tim 5:20 | Sinjin2 | 24227
Should this scripture be used to bring correction to a elderly widow by a pastor when she has spoken publically and brought hurt and embarrassment without thought, or should the issue be addressed privately?
2 | Should this be used to correct a widow? | 1 Tim 5:20 | Bottomlines | 24256
The proper method of correction or rebuke for a brother or sister is indicated in the following verses in Matthew, however the verses in 1 Timothy 5:19-20 deals only with elders or leaders in the Church as also noted below from footnotes found in The Full Life Study Bible for Pentecostal and Charismatic Christians. Mat 18:15 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother Mat 18:16 But if he will not hear (thee, then) take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established Mat 18:17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell (it) unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican. ............Footnote from Full Life Study Bible for Pentecostal and Charismatic Christians 1 Timothy 5:20 REBUKE BEFORE ALL. God’s word gives principles and guidelines with regard to the discipline of elders or pastors (v20-22). Because godly leaders are absolutely essential to the church, the following actions must be taken when a pastor or church worker sins and that sin is confirmed (v19) (1) Elders must not cover up or remain silent about the sins of other elders. The offending elder must receive “rebuke” and discipline (v.20) His sin must be exposed “before all” (i.e. made public) in order that the rest ot the elders will experience the “fear of God”, i.e. godly fear of sinning. (v.20) |

3 | By definition is it out of order? | 1 Tim 5:20 | Sinjin2 | 24272
Taken in the context it is written in, with the definition of an elder according to the Hebrew-Aramaic Greek Dictionary as: presbuteros; a cptv. of presbus (an old man); elder:--elder(3), elders(57), men of old(1), old men(1), older(1), older man(1), older ones(1), older women(1), women(1)and sin defined as : to miss the mark, do wrong, sin: - commit sin(1), committed...offense(1)committing(1), sin(11)sinned (17), sinning(4), sins(8)is it out of order completely to use this as Scriptural basis for correction? Granted not exactly how I would handle it but is it really out of order?
4 | By definition is it out of order? | 1 Tim 5:20 | EdB | 24444
SinJin2 Maybe not out of order but hard to imagine being in love. First the word presbuteros says old it doesn't mean old in years necessarily but rather old in faith (mature Christian). I assume your still talking about the widow in the first part of this thread. any corrction should be attempted privately and only after that fails should public correction be considered. I would think Romans 1:29-30; 2 Cor. 12:20; James 4:11; 1 Peter 2:1 would have better food for correction in this situation. EdB |

5 | By definition is it out of order? | 1 Tim 5:20 | Sinjin2 | 24472
While I do agree those verses aptly describe the situation, they do not seem to address how to deal with it. I agree that mature may mean a 30 yr old full of the Word or a 80 yr. old. The question is not about age at all. This issue has become a war zone in the church because that is the verse the minister chose to use to correct it. It has effectively divided the church and even caused people who claim to belong to Jesus to react in hatred and anger. I myself would have gone to the individual and asked what was meant etc. I do not seek an endorsement of the use of the verse but am curious to know what would indeed constitute the justifiable use of the verse to bring correction according to the Scripture not a particular church or demominational doctrine.
6 | By definition is it out of order? | 1 Tim 5:20 | EdB | 24588
Sinjin2 Again the answer to your question is Matt 18. The pastor should have talked to this woman privately, if the problem continued the Pastor should have gone to her again this time with 2 or three elders. If the problem continued after that the Pastor had every right and responsibility to take this woman before the church. In accordance with Matt 18:17 and 1 Tim 5:20. I pray this answers your question, if not maybe you can restate your question. EdB |
