Bible Question: Should this scripture be used to bring correction to a elderly widow by a pastor when she has spoken publically and brought hurt and embarrassment without thought, or should the issue be addressed privately? |
Bible Answer: The proper method of correction or rebuke for a brother or sister is indicated in the following verses in Matthew, however the verses in 1 Timothy 5:19-20 deals only with elders or leaders in the Church as also noted below from footnotes found in The Full Life Study Bible for Pentecostal and Charismatic Christians. Mat 18:15 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother Mat 18:16 But if he will not hear (thee, then) take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established Mat 18:17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell (it) unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican. ............Footnote from Full Life Study Bible for Pentecostal and Charismatic Christians 1 Timothy 5:20 REBUKE BEFORE ALL. God’s word gives principles and guidelines with regard to the discipline of elders or pastors (v20-22). Because godly leaders are absolutely essential to the church, the following actions must be taken when a pastor or church worker sins and that sin is confirmed (v19) (1) Elders must not cover up or remain silent about the sins of other elders. The offending elder must receive “rebuke” and discipline (v.20) His sin must be exposed “before all” (i.e. made public) in order that the rest ot the elders will experience the “fear of God”, i.e. godly fear of sinning.
