Scripture ... 1 Cor 1:10-13, Eph 4:1-16, Col 3:11-17 ... City not deserted, greetings and welcome to the forum. There are (distinctions) labels we all have, some by choice, others not. Most of the ones listed in Colossians 3:11 fit the latter. Read the context. Paul wasn't happy with the distinctions elsewhere (1 Cor 1:10-13) ... and your list fits there, except for "Black and White", which we cannot change. Paul wanted unity also in Ephesians 4:1-16. We should accept all who are believers, for we will have no labels in the new creation (Col 3:11). Hope I answered your question, Searcher |

Doctrinal differences have always divided churches, and the result is new denominations and off-shoots of denominations. The doctrinal differences can arise because of issues like baptism. Some believe in "baptismal regeneration" others don't. Some believe in pre-tribulation rapture of the church, while others believe in mid-tribulation, post-tribulation rapture, and others in pre-wrath rapture. Many churches water down and sugar-coat the word of God, and even become liberal in their theology. The Reformation period brought about division and separation of the Reformers from the papist church of Rome, which was followed by persecution and martyrdom for the quite a few of the Reformers at the hands of the Catholic church of Rome. The Reformers like Luther, Calvin and others divided over what they believed were false teachings of the church of Rome.People like Luther and others wanted to get the Bible written from Latin into a common language which the common people could read for themselves to which the church in Rome objected to very strongly. The Reformers them-selves faced divison when the Remonstrant's also called Arminian's could no longer fully agree with all of the Calvinistic teachings. I don't see division as bad. I do believe we should be united on the essentials of our Christian faith. By essentials I mean, that which is stated in the Apostles Creed - "I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic* (meaning one universal church) Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen." Then there are less-essentials which we can disagree on without causing division. And other things we often argue about that may be classified as non-essentials, which we will not all agree on - the timing of the rapture could be listed as one of these. I think unity is especially good whereever it is found. But just get into any Christian forum or chat room and how much unity do you notice? Churches continue to split and divide, and new denominations continue to pop up. Many false teachings prevail these days that appeal to those with itching ears, who only want to hear sweet sugar-coated messages. Peter said; there SHALL BE false teachers AMONG you. 2 Pet. 2:1 In my opinion - I agree with what I heard Dr. D. James Kennedy say as I was watching him one morning. Dr. Kennedy said - "I'd rather be divided by truth, than united by error." Unity yes! But not at the expense of compromising the unchangeable truth of God's word. |
