Philippians 3:2 Look out for those dogs [Judaizers, legalists], look out for those mischief-makers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh. Is this a report against the Law? It surely is against those who would try to convince Gentile Christians to get circumsized. How far do we go with this? |

Nuge, even though you are a newcomer to the forum, and welcome to it, you have surely posted a timely topic. Isn't it, first of all, worthy of note that God would inspire a Jew (Paul, a "Hebrew of the Hebrews" as he calls himself in Philippians 3:5, and a Pharisee at that) to speak out against the Judaizers, calling them "dogs" -- a term the Jews themselves loved to use to refer to Gentiles? But that is the clear message of Philippians 3:2...... It would appear that the only lesson mankind learns from history is how to repeat the same errors: Judaizers made grave errors in Paul's time and they make grave errors still, in our time. The irony of it is that it was the Jews who were the Judaizers in Paul's day. In our day the Gentiles have got into the act too. We view with dismay the fads that are going around these days among people who profess to be Christians yet who are deluded into believing that the roots of Judaism hold the key to opening the door to Christianity -- that, in essence, the more "Jewish" they become the better off they are as Christians. They are thus is repeating the errors that Paul solidly condemned in Philippians and elsewhere in the New Testament. You asked, "How far do we go with this?" For starters, you can find a clue to your question by an examination of a number of posts on this very forum. --Hank | ||||||

Oh, here it comes! The old "Constantine corrupted that olde tyme religion" line of thinking. Please, Bub, share with us the identity of the community with which you worship. Since you have such disdain for the "poor journalism" of the Gospel writers, seem to have an allergic reaction to the epistle to the Hebrews, and now are hading down the "Christianity is pagan" road, please be honest and forthright enough to tell us the name of the body in which you "Sing the Song of Moses and the Song of the Lamb." --Joe! |

Dear Joe….. As for, “Oh, here it comes! The old "Constantine corrupted that olde tyme religion" line of thinking.” God forbid that the history of your religion be explored! I’d be embarrassed to look at it too. As for my having “an allergic reaction to the epistle to the Hebrews”, I beg to differ, I think it’s a great epistle…..check out Steve’s “allergic reaction” to the word “gospel” in Hebrews 4:2 and 6……why don’t you check it out for yourself, I’m sure you allergies will kick up as well. As for, “Please be honest and forthright enough to tell us the name of the body in which you "Sing the Song of Moses and the Song of the Lamb." ………if you need a “label” I can’t help you out……but I’ll work on one…….maybe the “nikao crew”. Still singing the Song of Moses and the Song of the Lamb………Bub |

Hi, Bub; I'm glad you finally admitted that you are not a Christian; that makes things much clearer. As for an allergy to Hebrews, I have none. It is not I who is running afoul of the warnings in chapters 6 and 10. Could you provide straight answers to three simple questions? (1) Do you live a life of perfect adherene to the Law? (2) If not, where do you sacrifice your animals to atone for your sins? (3) If you don't sacrifice as prescribed by the Torah, how do plan to escape the penalty for your sins? '"King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know you do." Then Agrippa said to Paul, "Do you think that in such a short time you can persuade me to be a Christian?" Paul replied, "Short time or long--I pray God that not only you but all who are listening to me today may become what I am, except for these chains."' (Acts 26:27-29) I'm sure we on the forum pray the same for you. Of course, your disdain for both Christ and the Body of Christ may be a stumbling block for you. Peace and grace, Steve aka Indiana Jones |
