In cell based churches, what is the role of a cell leader?

Ruth101, I don’t know about other “cell-based churches” but the one my family attends have numerous “cells”. With 20,000 plus or minus “members”, besides the thousands of kids, and only 30ish pastors, it takes MANY to “lead”. But the cell groups themselves are NOT limited to “members” of the congregation. They included friends, co-workers, and neighbors of “members”. The cell leader’s main job is to work him/herself out of a job. Jesus commanded His disciples to make disciples teaching them (new disciples) to obey all that He commanded His disciples. The cell leaders “keep” the group in the right direction at hand while at the same time encouraging the rest of that cell group to “do their ministry”. In plain English – preach the gospel to make disciples, and teach them (new disciples) to preach the gospel to make disciples, and teach them (new disciples) to preach the gospel – and so on and on and on. Ephesians 4:12-13 explains the “why”. “…to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until WE ALL reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” T’oma |

T'oma: I appreciate your input on the "cell" thing. You seem to have considerable knowledge of the subject and know what you're talking about. It overwhelms me to think of a congregation of the proportions you describe. The one may wife and I attend (and are members of) pales by comparison -- some 3,000 membership, about half of whom are regular congregants. Let me ask you, if you will and if you feel your experience qualifies you to speak on the subject, to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the typical mega "cell" churches and to compare them with the corresponding strengths and weaknesses of the typical small to medium "neighborhood" churches. Would you do that for us? There may be readers of the Forum who are torn between making a decision whether to join a big church or a little church. --Hank

Hank, right off hand I can’t think of too many weaknesses of a mega “cell” church – unless it be that old standby mentality a few have -“someone else will do it”. Well, Praise the Lord – someone else DOES and will do it – when you have enough people willing to serve. Don’t forget - Mega churches are God’s idea. How many people were “members” of the “church” that Moses led through the wilderness? Millions? Beginning with 120 prayer warriors in Acts 2 – the Holy Spirit fell upon them and Peter preached a sermon. The same day’s “altar call” produced 3,000 from the multitude that heard the message. Acts 2:42-47 “They (at least 3,120) meet together in the temple courts (plural must mean more than one “court”, right?) And daily they met in homes (plural again). And the Lord added DAILY to their number those who were being saved”. This tells me that “they were obey the Lord’s command about teaching all that He had commanded – they were making disciples. Strengths of THIS church I work with – They have more to give. I have been part of many churches over the years. One church had six members besides the pastor and family and my family. They were “generous” but couldn’t begin to match the generosity of THIS cell-church. While a small church might support one missionary for a little amount, “we” support dozens, and I’m talking hundreds of dollars for each family and given every month. The small church might paid someone’s light bill; we often pay people’s rent. The small church might give a tank of gas; we often give people needing a vehicle to get to work, a car – be it a donated Cadillac, or Ford. The small church might help paint a struggling church’s walls, we paid off one’s 28,000 dollars mortgage. Isn’t that what the “first church” also did? In a few days, I can share what makes this “cell-church” so successful, and why we have to send people away because we don’t have any more room. Well, I have a few chores to attend to … so T’oma |

Thanks, T'oma. That certainly gives me a much clearer understanding of mega "cell" churches, and a better perspective, than I had before. I guess a lot of people including me have a tendency to think of huge churches as cold and impersonal, a place to get lost (physically, not spiritually) in. I'm delighted that you have largely dispelled that illusion. ...... I've also wondered why some little churches tend to stay little. I'm sure there are various reasons, but could one of them be because, in some of them at least, their members treat it more as a cozy little club than an evangelizing church? --Hank
