1 | Are our hearts HOLY or Wicked? | Eph 3:17 | JCrichton | 138165 | ||
Hi, Ray! Excellent reply! I think that part of the poblems we have is grabbing one (some) Scriptural passage and running with it--in this limited scope Scripture seems to contradict Scripture... Yet, when we allow the Holy Spirit to reveal the fullness of Truth, we begin to better understand our Lord's Word: You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. (John 15:3-6) Man's heart cannot be anything but wicked and corrupt (Psalms 14:1,3; 53:3; Romans 3:23; 5:12)... yet, in our Lord Jesus Christ, we are made whole onto God! (Romans 3:24-26; 6:11-14, 23; 8:1-17) God Bless! Angel |

Angel - please note Paul's discourse in Romans 7:14-25. He declares that he knows that no good thing dwells in him, where is this? (v 18)It is not his heart- it is in his flesh. By Christ's death and resurrection and indwelling Spirit upon our confession of faith, we have been freed from the penalty for sin and we have been freed from the power of sin. In heaven we will be free from the presence of sin. My sense is that we are ignorant of or complacent about the power that is in us, by the indwelling Spirit of God. Our hearts have been regenerated, they have been circumsized by God. "Moreover the LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, so that you may live." Dt 30:6 Apart from God's enabling we cannot keep His commands. In no way am I claiming that we do not still sin! Our old nature is still resident as Paul declares in Romans 7. Evil dwells in our flesh; yet, God can not exist with evil( No evil dwells with You. Ps 5:4). . . God's dwelling place is holy (Ps 46:4) Although we have sin dwelling in our flesh, the Spirit of God dwells in us: For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, "I WILL DWELL IN THEM AND WALK AMONG THEM; 1 Cor 6:16; Christ dwells in our hearts thorugh faith (Eph 3:17) This is the realization of Lev 19:2 'You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.Lev 19:2 Our hearts of stone have been changed, transformed by God."Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh." Ezek 36:26 As believers, our hearts have been changed, though once wicked and dead to God, He has made them to be His dwelling place: clean,good and holy, Through the power of Christ, we can resist sin. Daily we have a choice, to live from the heart or live from the flesh. (Rom 8:1-14) Think of it, this is the effect of the Incarnation - God with IN us! We have been crucified with Christ, we are dead to sin and it's penalty and we CAN be freed from its power if we allow Christ to live through us.(Rom 12:1-2) What potential we have - we can be all that God desires us to be. Hi Mommapbs, Excellent thoughts here I think. There are a couple of things that you might consider however. 1) Ezekiel 36:26 talks about our receiving a heart of flesh instead of the heart of stone. So when applying this passage to our lives as believers, the heart is still flesh. You have said, "Daily we have a choice, to live from the heart or live from the flesh." Romans 8:1-14". I think that it would be better said that we have a choice to live according to the (s)Spirit or walking according to the flesh. 2) We set our minds according to the things of the (Spirit). Romans 8:5. And in the same way the (Spirit) also helps our weakness. Romans 8:26 1 Cor 7:32, "But I want you to be free from concern. One who is unmarried is concerned about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord; 33 but one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how he may please his wife, 34 and his interests are divided. And the woman who is unmarried, and the virgin, is concerned about the things of the (Lord), that she may be holy both in body and spirit; but one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how she may please her husband. 34 And this I say for your own benefit; not to put a restraint upon you, but to promote what is seemly, and to secure undistracted devotion to the Lord." 3) I have penciled in a lower case "spirit" for Ezekiel 36:27. That spirit within us is the power that the Spirit gives us. That spirit is the new heart, that spirit is what we should be filled with, that spirit is what we should clothe ourselves with as the holy ones chosen of God. Colossians 3:12, "And so, as tose who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the (Lord) forgave you, so also should you. 14 And beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity." The word of Christ richly dwells within us, and we should be filled with joy and the holy spirit, teaching and admonishing one another. 4) We are to live godly lives, but God is the Holy One, the only true God; and we are simply saints or holy ones. In Ezekiel 36:23 the Spirit of God is proved holy among us. From the heart, Ray |
